Penn State hires Matt Limegrover as new Offensive Line coach

They say every (good) coach maintains a list of 2 or 3 viable replacements for every position coach or coordinator job, so that they can reach out quickly when they need to without a protracted search. As detail oriented as Frankin seems to be, I have no doubt he does this.

If I recall correctly, Franklin stated early on that he keeps such a list.

It's also a good time to be looking for a coach, as the AFCA annual convention is this week in San Antonio. Apparently Franklin and Limegrover had their first interview down in Texas earlier this week, then met with the whole offensive staff yesterday and today.

So that explains why Pat Narduzzi was across the aisle from me on a flight from Dallas to Pittsburgh this morning.

That's likely exactly why - Narduzzi was in Bristol (I believe) for the National Championship Film Room broadcast, then he probably caught a redeye down to the convention after the game ended, as Tuesday is the day with the most going on. The convention wrapped up last night so coaches can get back on the road when the dead period ends.

Great hire IMHO.

From Pittsburgh CC, went to the University of Chicago and then got an MS from Northwestern.

He know's the big ten. I also think Chicago is part of the CIC if I'm not mistaken.

Most pitt grads could never get into the University of Chicago....let alone play football and graduate.

Love to torment you guys ( its so easy) but props to Coach Franklin on a great hire... Excellent coach

Me likey, especially with realizations and comments like below.

After getting fired by the Gophers, Limegrover admitted that he had felt stretched too thin wearing two hats as offensive coordinator and offensive line coach.

He is a Pittsburgh native who grew up watching Penn State. Last month, he turned down an offer to become the head coach at Southern Illinois. He interviewed with other schools to be the offensive line coach as well.

"I want to be an O-line coach, and be the best one that I can be," Limegrover said. http://www.startribune.com/penn-state-hires-matt-limegrover-as-offensive-line-coach/365172871/

What does the board freak out about now?

I'm freaking out about not having anything to freak out about!!!:eek::eek::eek:

Seriously, I don't get that worked up over assistant coaches. They may be great hires. They may be total busts. Only time will tell.

This is an absolute HOME RUN HIRE for an OL coach! Amazing job by CJF! Our run game is going to be scary good now, and into the near future!!!

What has Minnesota's line been like?
Probably left Minnesota because the defensive coordinator was promoted over him.

Wonder if Minny fans will complain about a "lateral move"??
They probably won't care too much - Limegrover wasn't retained when Claeys got the head job after Kill was forced to retire. Although I have seen that Southern Illinois had a great deal of interest in him for their head coaching job this offseason and he turned them down.

I was hoping for Munchak, but maybe Franklin was afraid Munch would pull his hair......

Minny has done a nice job with their OL under Kill. They seem to turn big doughy kids into solid players. I like the thought of how Limegrover will be able to work with our solid class.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Penn State has hired former Minnesota offensive coordinator Matt Limegrover as the offensive line coach for the Nittany Lions.

Coach James Franklin made the announcement Wednesday.

Limegrover, a native of Pittsburgh, grew up a Penn State fan.

He had the dual role at Minnesota of offensive coordinator and offensive line coach for the last five seasons under now-retired coach Jerry Kill.

Not sure he can cook, but he loved to it eat. His weight ballooned to over 400 lbs before gastric bypass surgery.

A very good story.
An inspiration for many.

He should be able to relate well with players who have to put in the time and effort to achieve their goals.

Plus, he grew up a Penn State fan and has a good academic background.

Looks like a solid hire for CJF.

Since he arrived in Minnesota in 2011, Limegrover recruited a slew of offensive linemen who became starters up front. One of them — center Tyler Moore — started the final eight games last season as a true freshman.

That hasn’t happened much under Limegrover. But it has not been uncommon for redshirt freshmen to play key roles up front. Connor Mayes started the first nine games at guard as a redshirt freshman last season. Josh Campion got hurt last year and missed most of the season, but he started 39 consecutive games before that, starting as a redshirt freshman. Starting right tackle Jonah Pirsig started all 13 games last season and played as a redshirt freshman. Left tackle Foster Bush and guard Ben Lauer also started games last season and were contributors as earl as their redshirt freshman seasons.
Thank God! Finally.

Fact is that, if we are looking to have our players graduate in 3 years, we cannot wait 3 years to play them. We would NEVER have an O line if that were the case.
