Hockey Penn State Hockey suffers 3-1 Loss to Boston University

Is season over or do they play Denver for third place?
The season is over. I think it's tough to have those 3rd place games--finding motivation for them other than if it's for a medal at the Olympics is hard. Basketball is a great example. It would have been tough for Duke and Auburn to show up after their devastating losses.

I think BU has more high-end talent.

But they finished behind the same Maine team (reg season and tourney) that we dominated.

It’s a shame these matchups are one and done. Hard to say what would happen in a best of 7.
I'd like a best of 3 BUT...if anything upsets are more likely to happen in a one and done scenario. See Yale winning a little over a decade ago. In a best of 7, I don't like our chances at all. Sergeev would have needed to steal a bunch of games--he was awesome last night--just one mental lapse when he lost sight of the puck and moved. You never move. Never.

Great season. Don't even know the name of our coach but let's sure we do what is needed to retain him.

Put up a better fight? Boston got a cheap goal and had to hold on. They were a good team but PSU had them on their heals the whole third period.
1. Nobody refers to them as "Boston" ... they're BU. Just like Boston College is BC. Partially this is required because, when you're young, and out and about, you're referring to them, quickly, as "BU chicks" or "BU co-eds," which need to be differentiated from "BC chicks" and "BC co-eds." Totally different vibe and the distinction must be made. Also, they're both the also-ran schools up here, outside of Harvard and MIT ... so when you see a lesser person, you might ask "BC or BU?" to let them know they're not respected.

2. Totally. But BU pretty much dominated this one.

BU and BC are not "also-ran" schools. You're a piece of work.

lol I’m in Boston frequently and have had many pints near BU. Also that was far from domination

Nice season for Penn State - congratulations to the team for a tremendous turnaround. I have an athlete at BU now, so I am rooting for them to win it all.

I did my grad work up here. I then recruited from schools up here (still do). And now my kids are heading into the post-secondary school selection process after I've lived here for nearly 30 years. I'm quite sure I know the area, in terms of how schools are viewed.

I was quite clear to frame the commentary in a comparative manner ... there's a pecking order amongst the many schools up here. And, yes, BU and BC are seen by Harvard and MIT folks as "also-rans." They're quality schools, for sure (like Tufts), but Harvard and MIT are the elite, and BU, BC and Tufts are in that next tier (I just looked it up to be sure - BC is T37th, Tufts T37th and BU is T41st in the latest US News rankings; whereas MIT is 2nd and Harvard is 3rd). Even Brown (T13th), which is nearby, gets snickers from Harvard folks as one of the "lesser Ivies," even though it's obviously a great school.

This isn't controversial ... not sure why the personal shot over something that's not at issue. I could say our Sun is a star and some fruit loop would disagree and take a personal shot at me. And, inevitably, bison would like that comment.

No one cares where you did your grad work or that you are a fruit loop PeePee

Thought I'd share a quick review of my experience. I live in St Louis so I didn't have to travel. Tix for the semis are for both games. I went only for the PSU game, but wound up seeing the OT of Denver and Directional Michigan
  • The NCAA seemed to do a pretty good job to make it a destination type event worth going to
  • There is apparently a "fan experience" that I didn't see/attend due to my arrival time.
  • There were fans in tons of different college hockey jerseys. Seems like many buy tickets and come for the experience, whether their
  • team makes it or not.
  • PSU was well represented - most fans by far and they were vocal. WE ARE chant was prevalent and the arena erupted on PSU's goal. Somehow Zombie Nation played during the goal celebration.
  • Lot of merch vendors that featured "Frozen four" teams and also individual team merch. It was very expensive ($40-48 for a T-shirt)
  • On a personal note, tickets were pretty much sold out, but there were plenty of resale tickets available. I assume they were bought by fans whose teams got knocked out in the regionals. Tickets were about $50 in the upper level and $150-250 in the lower level. On the glass was $300-450. NLC tix were $200 and you had to commit to semis and finals if they won.
B/c I was local, I kept checking availability and waited to buy tix. I wound up getting tix in the 3rd row, near the blue line, for $25. They were $200 the day before. Upper level were listed at $11. I just checked ticketmaster for the Final tomorrow and there are lots of tix available. I assume they will crash in price tomorrow. Next year is vegas so that could be a very different tic situation.

The Enterprise Center in STL was a good venue. Good variety of food options. An overwhelming number of alcochol vendors and a few places, like a biergarden on the concourse, where fans could congregate, especially if you were there for both games with an hour in between. Overall, I'd say that if you enjoy hockey, the event is worthwhile even if your team isn't playing. The NCAA is putting on a good event.

That sounds like a very fair analysis, PurposePitch. I don't consider Harvard and MIT as American schools. Spent last weekend in Cambridge and it's a crossroads of the world. These are international schools, attracting the elite (rich, connected, smart, diverse (by skin color, not economic)) from all corners of the globe. For regular native-born American kids, there are plenty of great options to compete and learn. BU and BC certainly offer these opportunities as does Penn State.

The Frozen 4 is in Vegas next year. Boy would that be awesome if we make it again next year!
Based on my experience last night, I'd recommend making the trip to Vegas if PSU makes it. Obviously Vegas has its own set of things to do but the frozen 4 is a draw in its own right, beyond just the game.

Yes I agree that someone from Harvard or MIT is going to look down their nose at BU or BC. Heck they would do that to Cornell. Brown as you say, Duke, Stanford, Vanderbilt, Rice, you get the picture. I thought you personally were saying BU and BC were also ran schools so that was my mistake.

Just two minutes and 15 seconds into the third period, the Nittany Lions would get the first score they so desperately needed, courtesy of Nic Degraves. The freshman collected the loose puck out in front and put the Nittany Lions on the board with plenty of game left. Ben Schoen and Simon Mack earned assists on the goal.

First period, Boston University scored two goals in the second period. Penn State freshman Nic DeGraves scored the only goal for the Nittany Lions in the third period.
