last week's AT&T at Pebble Beach was fantastic. The Irish players took advantage of the awful weather on Friday and Saturday to take control of the event. Rory played the best golf of his career. Pebble is, to me, the most beautiful place in the USA and the only rival I've seen is Southern Italy. But those immaculate golf courses on that rocky shore on a nice day is as nice a view as I've ever seen in my lifetime.

So the blue blooders contrast that with this week's Waste Management Open. The WM Open is golf surrounded by stands that look like a NASCAR race. The fans get drunk and completely unruly which is the WM's charm. Given that, it will wear off fast if it gets too out of hand. But it is fun and worth the watch. It is also great to see a beautiful golf course in the desert while we fumble with ice and snow back east. Good things are on their way!

There was a lot of talk that things really got out of hand last year. IIRC, the tournament established some new policies in response to the incidents that many felt crossed the line. It will be interesting to see if they can preserve some of the rowdiness that made the WM unique while eliminating the stuff that made it something both players and many fans didn't enjoy.

I was there last year, and they had rain on Thursday and Friday that didn't allow them to finish round 2 on Friday. As a result, they finished round 2 on Saturday morning. Then there was a break of about 90 minutes while they set up the course and the pin placements for round 3. In addition, the rain didn't let people spread out around the course as they normally would. Both of these factors were the catalyst for things to get out of hand.

We have gone to the WM a few times, but we won't go back on a Saturday in the future. This year, we decided to skip the tournament altogether to see how the changes work out.

Speaking of golf anyone been watching the TGL indoor golf? Pretty amazing g facility
I found it to be "interesting" and a great concept. It is a little too frat boy to me. However, the worst sports time of the year is right now. Football has wound down. The way too long seasons for Hockey and the NBA are in the middle and boring. Baseball hasn't started. College basketball is a bunch of kids nobody has heard of because as soon as the get a rep, leave for the NBA.

So the door is wide open to capture sports post NFL regular season.

That's interesting. My two children who are dual Italian citizens, visited Italy for the first time last summer and had a low opinion of Southern italy. I am pretty sure they went to the Amalfi Coast. My son called Naples Italy a sh*thole. I visited Italy about 25 years ago and loved florence.

I get that. Naples is crap. I was speaking of several places: Positano, Almafi, and Sorrento. But also a place in Sicily named Taormina (white lotus season 2 was filmed here). Of course, I also have to mention Paterno. I should also mention Bora Bora was pretty spectacular.

Thanks, I will check with my kids as to whether they visited those places.

this is interesting. Looks like Colin Morikawa is playing with advanced balls not available to everyone else.

I played Cypress Point.
I've heard it is nicer than Pebble but Pebble has so many great moments. The announcers said, this week, that the shot from the tree roots on 18 will be played again and again all year and maybe into coming years. Everyone I know tries the Tom Watson chip on 17.

The best course I ever played was the Ocean Course at Kiawah. Of course, we all lined up to try the putt that Bernhard Langer missed to give the USA the Ryder Cup. (I drained it, but the cup was in a different location on the green).

Nothing compares to Augusta National. I have been there many times and every time I go it looks better and better in person.

An ACE at 16 at the Waste Management Open! (also, BTW, Tiger returns to the tour next week at the Genisis Open. This is the one typically played at the LA country club but was moved due to the fires to Torre Pines outside of San Diego).

The best courses I've seen are Scioto and Muirfield in Columbus. I caddied at both of them for a short time. Scioto in particular was really special in that it could be challenging for good players and playable for average players. Muirfield is a very nice golf course for pros but the greens are so fast that a 15 handicapper would have a hard time just keeping a downhill chip on the green. In Cleveland when I was a kid I played Manikiki and it is a really great Donald Ross course.

Personally, I have no real desire to play the worldwide famous golf courses. I would rather have a very good round on an average public golf course than play an average round at St andrews. Golf to me is 98% of personal challenge and it is the challenge rather than the scenery that is most meaningful to me.

I love comparing videos of current aces on 16 with Tiger’s from 1997.

I have heard recently that some pro golfers have stated they play on such nice courses that they can't imagine playing on courses that do not have great fairways and immaculate greens.

For Golf Fans, here is Scheffler talking about Masters week, preparation, and a hole-by-hole evaluation of Augusta.

This is an amazing story. This guy fires a 62 yesterday to come within one stroke of winning the event. What is so incredible about that? He had brain surgery less than two years ago. September 18th, 2023 to repair a brain lesion. Inspirational.

There was a good episode of Full Swing that covered his story, as well as the story of MW Lee, who won the event.
