Philadelphia Transportation, Hotels, Food & Bars - MEETUP THREAD

Just so everyone knows, Taxi's still exist and are often less expensive than Uber as they don't have the "surge" pricing. Cabs from the airport will be vetted. Ask that driver how to identify a "gypsy" cabs in order to avoid for future rides.

This is under other discussions. A friend of mine and his brothers are heading to Philadelphia for the Tournament and he asked me if I knew of any good restaurants to get a fish sandwich on Friday. Any help from you guys from a Western Pennsylvania guy. Thanks

I dont know about a sandwich but fish and chips, would be Mcgillins or Black Sheep Pub. I cant name a specific spot but Reading Terminal has everything.

We’re staying at the Marriott downtown. Do you recommend taking the regional rail to get to center city, or Lyft/uber?

Take the regional rail to center city. You will get off at either Suburban Station or Jefferson Station. Jefferson might be closer. Not sure. About a 2 block walk. Once you are in CC it is very easy to simply take the subway to the Wells Fargo. It is a straight run. 15 minutes and Wells fargo is the last stop.

Probably Uber

The airport line will drop you at Suburban Station which is about 6 or so blocks from your hotel. Depends on the luggage you're bringing. For me, backpack, yes, luggage, no. But you may think otherwise.

You could transfer from the airport line to the Market line which would drop you at 11th but not worth the hassle.
Mostly agreed, though it also depends on arrival time.

In rush hour, I'd take Septa to Suburban Station, then Uber or cab from there -- to mimimize or avoid Uber surge pricing. Also saves time vs rush hour traffic.

Jefferson/Market East will get them a block or two from the Marriott depending which exit they use.

SEPTA site says CCs accepted for rail fares. Can I buy a single reusable, disposable pass without a fixed up front fee (just load it for the expected fares)? Or is there an app that allows me to scan for admittance to the system? Prolly not worth it to get a permanent card that’s reloadable by app…

So it seems like it is $2.50 per ride and no discount if using the septa key card or credit card, right? Though they do say something about 4.95 per card and it being refundable, and I don’t know what that means.

So if I understand, no discounts or advantage to use multiple people or days. Right?
Click on "Types of Passes". You probably want the three-day for $15 option, but read through to be sure.

We have hotels booked out by the airport and trying to figure out the best way to get to Wells Fargo arena.

I was in Philly many many moons ago so, anyone with information please chime in.

Parking: I'm sure is available at the arena but I'm guessing it's 50.00 or more per session to park (maybe per day). Thought's?

Is there a rail that runs directly to the airport or would I need to go center city rail then across to the airport? Any ideas on pricing?

I see UBER from the airport is between $31 and $65

Is there a bus? Pricing ideas?

There are currently 5 in my group.
Regional rail runs out to the airport. Can take that to 30th st station and then transfer anywhere from there. BSL runs right down to the arena

Not really worth getting a septa card if you’re fine using tap to pay. It’ll be more or less the same cost.

A Key Card plus three-Day Convenience Pass will cost $19.95 for 24 rides over the 3 days. Tap and pay will cost $2.50 per ride, so if are out and about, it's a significant savings.

Plus, if I understand correctly from the web site, you pay $15 for the three day and $4.95 for the Septa card, but if you register the Septa card online you get the $4.95 refunded.

Sort of...Here is the refund policy. It's for future travel, so if you're not planning to return to Philadelphia anytime soon, just call it a sunk cost.

"The card costs $4.95, but when you register it at septakey.org, the card’s cost is refunded to your card’s Travel Wallet for spending on future travel."

If you choose an Irish or English pub, you'll probably be in the right place.

McGillin's right by City Hall, or The Black Taxi, in the Fairmount neighborhood, about 1.5 miles from City Hall. Fairmount is a really nice neighborhood, right across from the Art Museum.

McGillin's - very popular Irish style pub right in center city. They have a fish n chips that is very good.

The Black Taxi - an actual Irish bar, owned by an Irish immigrant and likely to be filled with lots of Irish guys shouting at some random soccer match from Europe. I really like this bar.

Oh, if you go to Fairmount the Mexican Restaurant, Cantina "Calaca" Feliz is right on Fairmount Avenue. There are many other bars/restaurants in this neighborhood, all filled with people walked over from their home. Since they'll be by the Art Museum, they may as well run up the steps like Rocky.
Good call on Cantina Feliz, awesome food

Looking forward to being crammed into one of many SEPTA cars with some of you!

Not to break your heart or anything but I’m not planning on attending in person.
The wild thing is, having met @PAHURDLER in real life, he could easily take over your handle after you David Carradine yourself. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if you are talking to yourself here.

My passport is expired so I doubt I’ll go out as exotic as he did.
And this is how you start to establish an alibi

OT to wrestling, but if anyone is returning to Center City between sessions on Saturday, strongly recommend the day-long Wanamaker Organ recital at Macy's on 13th/Market, across the street from City Hall.

This is the world's largest functioning musical instrument (28k pipes) and a piece of Philadelphia culture. The traditional place to meet people is at the Grand Court Eagle in the center of the store.

Saturday will be last public recital for a while, as Macy's is closing on Sunday. The city and building owner have said the Organ and the Eagle will be preserved, but nobody really knows until that happens -- or if the Organ and Eagle will be available to the public.
