What a day! Kudos to Canton for a great match. They best Benton in the semis. Then Warrior Run knocks them down in the D4 finals

PA AA Wrap up.
Faith Academy wins their district 72-0. When will this mega team bump to AAA? A team from all over should be forced to bump. They will easily win a AA title this year.

Reynolds, even without Louie Gill wins another D10 title. They beat a tough Ft Leboeuf, we been hearing about for years. Coach Taylor is a great coach

Love or hate him Coach Veres gets it done again and beats up Saucon Valley. Bouzakis leads his new team to PIAA states. Coach Veres will win the most liked coach for the fourth year in a row.

Honesdale wins their district but stands zero chance at states.

McDevitt wins third in district 3. It’s like a team Nauman squad but they are tough. Berks wins the district title

Chest nut Ridge crushed everyone in their district. Not sure if they have any competition in their district.

United wins district 6. Not sure if this is a new school but I never heard of United. They beat Huntingdon.

Coach Sonny Abe leads Burgettstown to a D7 title and beats Burrell. Burrell won like the last twenty D7 AA titles. Abe is PSU trained.

Brookville beats a tough Clearfield team. Don’t sleep on Brookville for the battle of third behind Faith and NDGP.

1. Faith
2. NDGP
3. Warrior Run

United has been around for a long time. Took my step-sons to an elementary tournament there. They are both now over 40 :). They are located along rt. 22 between Ebensburg and Murraysville in Armagh Pa.

don't know if it's the same school but seems to me there was a United back in the 60s and 70s that had a state champ!!

Reynolds matched up well against FLB. Their studs largely wrestled FLBs studs and got the job done. FLB is still a tough out and has some tremendous individual wrestlers so I’m intrigued by what they can do down in Hershey.

You would think the higher ups would adjust schedule to have them hit no sonner than semis.
They split returning state champs in individual tournament.🤨
I don’t think the higher ups really care about wrestling. The only one who might make a chance to the bracket is ❤️man. If he thinks it might stop his d11 squad from making the finals he will make the call to Bobby

As stated above, United has been around forever. They're really small to the point they couldn't field a football team a year ago. As in they didn't have 11 healthy kids on the roster. I don't know if they co op with some other school, but it's pretty impressive they won D6.

They've had some pretty good wrestlers go for D2 power UPJ in the not too distant past.

Central Dauphin beat Cumberland Valley big in Dist. 3

I read somewhere that Pottsville sent out all JVs against their first round opponent in a pseudo protest of the PIAA/Kunstek situation. Did that actually happen?

Used to battle with a kid from United back during the Junior Olympic days. One of toughest kid I ever wrestled. He died in a car wreck in highschool. Sad...

They damn well could have fielded a football team but they were tired of losing so they co opted with Blacklick Valley. This is the new way of cheating now for small schools who can't recruit...same thing happened at Williamsburg and Juniata Valley, same thing for Bishop Carroll and a few other d 6 a and 2a schools.

what do you mean by this, "This is the new way of cheating now for small schools who can't recruit."?

is it cheating if it is within the rules and we'll publicized?

maybe this was some sarcasm that I missed.

I'm saying that I know of 3 small d6 schools who had Williamsburg, United, Blacklick, and Caroll on their schedule for 22 through 25 and had to pull them all off and schedule bigger schools because they all co-opted out. It takes an already unlevel playing field and makes it more unlevel.

I am not looking for an argument, so please do not take this as one. I think co-opting is more about trying to continue to give students an opportunity.

I think if Williamsburg or United were on the schedule their opponents would have open dates in the near future as they most likely would not field a team at all in 2022 or beyond. I know there have been teams (not Williamsburg or United) that forfeited games because they did not have enough healthy players to safely play (Philipsburg Osceola 2019).

I suppose Blacklick Valley and Juanita Valley would now have bigger rosters but not much bigger (less than 20 kids more), so that could put their opponents at a disadvantage. When there is a co-op are not the populations of both schools combined to determine their classification? I am pretty sure that was my experience.

Ill add that the enrollment numbers of each school is added together to determine classification. To me, that is the difference between coop's and blatant recruiting. NDGP, MCcort and FC pull wrestlers from enough school districts to be 5A if wrestling used other sports breakdowns, thats not counting the out of state kids. Yet they compete alongside schools like Sullivan County, Benton, and Towanda.

Now what Denny Harer is setting up by Coop'ing with a Private school is going to really shake things up when every kid that goes to Buffalo Valley ends up at small Christian school to COop with Montgomery. I guess if you can't beat them, join them.

Denny has been all too quiet with this whole Faith and Mcort thing. I figured he had something up his sleeve. This makes sense why he stayed Quiet.

PIAA needs to make the AA, AAA and private move already. I don’t think any public or private schools would have an issue with it.

Speaking of co-ops, is Portage now co-opting with Penn Cambria for wrestling? I didn't see them have a wrestling schedule this year. For us old timers they are like mixing oil and water. When I was young(er) some of the most exciting nights at the pool hall in Lilly were when a car full of Portage guys would cruise the town. It would empty the place out with guys looking to defend their turf.

Ridgway / Johnsonburg was the same. For football we had to have a police escort to Johnsonburg and back (8 miles each way). Now they play together as Ridgway Elker football.

The first year of the Juniata Valley- Williamsburg co-op there were 17 kids, 4 of which were freshman, on Williamsburg's roster. Not sure how they were fielding a team, or who they would've played that was smaller. 38 kids from Juniata Valley, including freshman, for a total of 55, 47 total this past year.

Edited to add; there were discussions of Williamsburg getting absorbed by Juniata Valley and Central almost 30 years ago because of low enrollment.

Philipsburg-Osceola had the chance to co op with West Branch and refused. Some schools choose not to do it. P-O is still playing.

Of course these two schools hate each other more than the Hatfields and McCoys so there's that 😆 🤣

It appears Portage is in a co-op with PC for wrestling. I wasn't aware of that either. I never got the vibe that wrestling was big in Portage. I'm not sure how big it is in PC either.

I have heard many stories of the PC-Portage rivalry. Wish they still played each other.

Portage is one of those small schools where football is a huge tradition. They always have tons of kids on the roster.

Yes, they did not wrestle their lineup against Easton. Final was like 73-0? No Demcher, Monger, or McFarlands, I’m not familiar enough with their lineup to know who else they sat, but it wasn’t the team that went 16-0

FCA will 'bump up' when everyone else does (NDGP, McCort, etc), don't you think?

As for Burgettstown, as someone mentioned that is Vigilotti's moreso than Abe. I think Abe just left NA a year or so ago, so while he is def an asset, he is not the reason for the success of that program.

Could they have beaten Easton? I don’t see them doing this if they had a legit chance to make state duals in chocolate town

It would have been a good dual - back of the envelope I have an 8-5 bout split for Easton, but that’s with Kunstek. And nobody in D11 was beating Nazareth or Bethlehem Catholic - they would have seen Becahi in semis if they beat Easton.

Shades of Palisades forfeiting every weight to Beca a few years ago. Which got their coach suspended for a year by PIAA and fired by the school.

I think people would tell you the Palisades thing was “worse” because Omar just didn’t send anybody out and made each Becahi kid go out and take a forfeit, and he did it specifically against Becahi. I don’t think Keener and Julian’s beef was with Easton, and they actually had a dual, though not the dual intended.

D11 has a long history of forfeits in protest - Don Rohn famously sent his JV’s to State duals in 1999 when he thought it was too close to the D11 tournament and messed with kids weight descents.

I guess maybe Palisades was worse, though Pottsville could've declined D11 Duals instead of making a farce of it.

Both set terrible examples for the kids they're supposed to be molding into men.

Breakdown for AA
Warrior Run Vs Ft leboeuf
Both young teams.
Milheim brothers too much and help WR get the win. Match of the day Little Milheim Vs Przybycien

Sonny’s Burgettstown Vs Honesdale
Neither team is that good and no real super stars. Burgettstown has alittle more fire power
The Abe touch, Burgettstown wins.

Saucon Valley Vs United
This United team has some good records. They either don’t wrestle a tough schedule or they are going to do some damage. SV will be big and strong. They won’t be star struck and will give United their first defeat of the season. United is young tho and should be back next year

West Perry vs chest nut ridge
Both veteran program of chocolate town. This will be the best match of round one. Chest nut wins

Rematch of a month ago
Burrell Vs Brookville
Burrell closes the gap but Brookville gets the win. Both staples of AA and there every year.

Faith academy vs Reynolds
Faith is really young and not one senior. They put the whole state on blast. They beat up Reynolds and go on to win their first of 7-8 state titles in a row. Kudos to their coaches and group. This team will be fun to watch over the years. Ironic part is gill won’t be able to wrestle for transferring and Faith’s whole team did.

Berks Vs Canton
Canton lead by the ward boys are good but Berks is sneaky good. Berks is another private school that put a lot of pieces together and did it without any PIAA penalties. They are another young team and will be back.

Huntingdon Vs ND
ND is very solid and added a stud in Vince Bouzakis. Blobe is tough and a new addition in the lineup. They are the second best team by far. They will reload for next year.

My take is most teams are young and it will make for a great state duals in 2024. Faith has 11 freshmen and zero seniors. Most of the other heavy hitters are young. Montgomery has a really young lineup and could be at state duals next year
Quarters
SV beats Burgettstown
WR beats Chestnut
Berks beats Brookville
Faith Beats NDGP

Semis
WR beats SV
Faith beats Berks

Finals
Faith beats WR

Did you do the matchups on Faith - NDGP or are you just winging it as usual? Also, Blobe is a new addition to the lineup? Do you mean LaPenna?

And also - as predicted - you acknowledged that I explained the transfer rules to you a few weeks ago and then, BANG, states are here and you are comparing the Gill transfer to the FCA "transfers" as if they are remotely close to being the same thing according to PIAA rules.

Didn’t United have to cancel games because they were running out of players two seasons ago? Very small school and if you drive through entire school district you’ll wonder how they field a wrestling team let alone a football team. And lol.. if they were tired of losing not sure why they’d coop with Blacklick Valley… they always lose. Now back in the day, United was always tough. During the Frank Krevetzki days.

United wasn't winning but they had 23 players. Now of course 23 players isn't enough but their opponents, Moshannon Valley 28 players, Glendale 22 players, West Branch 27 players etc. Blacklick wasn't winning either so last year they co opted and guess what? 2-8.

Now usually it works though, Juniata Valley went 12-2 state semis 2 years ago. Ridgway Johnson burg went 8-2 the first co op year.

Nether Mo Valley, Glendale nor West Branch has had United as an opponent recently.

Also, Juniata Valley went 10-3 two years ago, the first year of the Williamsburg co-op and lost to Bishop Guilfoyle in the district 6 championship game. 5 years ago they went to the state semifinals and lost to Lackawanna Trail.

Again, Williamsburg had 17 total kids on their football roster 2 years ago, 4 of which were freshman. They had less this year.

Edited to add; The United/Blacklick Valley co-op is in the AA classification, as both schools male enrollment tallies move them up.
