Pigrome out for the season for Maryland

They had a great opening game, but also had some bad injuries. Is Aniebonam the one that was carted off? Hopefully he is ok as I flipped over when they were just putting him on to the cart.

Is it me or am I the only one hoping the terps improve so our division will be a true GAUNTLET

If Hill stays healthy, this does nothing but accelerate Maryland's development as a program.
Hate to see a player suffer a severe injury, but Hill would have taken over for Pigrome sooner rather than later anyway. Maryland is a much more difficult opponent with Hill than with Pigrome.
The downside, of course, is that if Hill does get banged up the Terrapins are very thin and in very dire straits at the QB position.

Your argument is based purely on stars and potential. If you watched the UM-Texas game, Pigrome had a great game. His stats weren't overwhelming but he looked calm, really athletic and threw a nice deep ball. Who knows if Kasim Hill is any good? He's never played a snap in college.

Hmmm. Its a loss for sure just don't think its a huge loss though. I think Hill would have been starting by the 3rd or 4th game anyway. Definitely hurts their depth.
Depth at QB kinda matters.

He would have had to improve a great deal from our game and the games I watched him play here in MD.
He wasn't very good.
From everything I've heard, and read he was pretty much a "place holder" until Hill got up to speed.
But thats just the sports guys radio talk here in Balto.

I have no idea who may have felt Pigrome or Hill was a better recruiting catch. But I've seen a lot of Pigrome, at least as much as he's played over the years. More importantly, the Maryland Coaching Staff has seen a lot of both Pigrome and Hill. I am sure your recitation regarding Hill's lack of experience played a large part in Pigrome winning the starting nod against Texas. Hill - barring injury - would have been starting soon enough anyway. But you can take that up with them.
norm, good to have you back.

Having reassessed my original contribution to this thread, I plead ignorance.

Actually I'm going to sort of retract what I said as well. I said it would hurt their depth, I think it will have a HUGE impact on their depth.
With the way they planned on using Hill, Durkin may have to be a bit more conservative.
While I wasn't a fan of Pigrome as a starter he was a decent runner and provided a good back up, now....
Is that wrestler from PA still on their team as a QB?

This was part of my ignorance. I was thinking of Perry Hills (former PIAA wrestling champion) who graduated and I assumed he was coming off injury. Ignorance. I see that it is Kasim Hill who is a big, fast, strong dude with boatloads of potential. They might not have wanted to rush him in as starter just yet. Pigrome surely had the advantage on knowledge of running the O. It could be that UMd benefits from Hill having to play. Still, depth is important for games obviously. Practice and preparation for opponents too. Also, most true freshmen have some growing pains at QB, especially taking care of the ball.

Hillis? I think he graduated. Hill is much better than people realize. Kid has a strong arm and even better legs. Reminds me a lot of MRob/DClark/RCasey. Getting thrown to the wolves may not have been their ideal route for him, but from a mental standpoint he can handle it... physical - we'll see.

On the other hand, losing Aniebonam does negatively impact the Terrapins. Their defensive front is neither overly talented nor deep. He was/is their best play-maker along their defensive front.
That was one of those unfortunate freak accidents, two Maryland defenders colliding with one another while trying to make a play, if the injury occurred on the play that I am remembering.
A returning starter who:

As a Junior (2016): Appeared in all 13 games, making six starts ... Led team w/ 14.0 TFLs and 9.0 sacks ... Led all 3-4 outside linebackers in Big Ten with 30 pressures ... Totaled 46 tackles ... Ranked fifth in Big Ten with 0.69 sacks per game ... Totaled 89 TFL yards - 8th-most in program single-season history

Also means that the expectations for Durkin in year 2 just went way down. So Durkin gets the benefit of the Texas win for recruiting and program. Yet can blame two big injuries for the reason to keep expectation down. Also get him a year to get Hill a whole lot of snaps without a ton of pressure. I agree that 'long' term, not the worse thing in the world to happen to Maryland at this exact time.

Yea MD has a history of chewing up and spitting out their own QB's.
I thought Hill would be the starting QB by the 3rd or 4th game anyway but the loss of Pigrome is much bigger simply because of the security blanket he offered. Hill will be taking a pounding.

I didn't know he got hurt until I got back from our game. Thats as big a loss as Pigrome.

Can someone find the article where Maryland's head coach reveals that Hill "would have been starting anyway by the third week"? Thank you in advance.
