Pirates pick up Detroit reliever Soria in a trade

On a ten million dollar contract for 2015
I'm OK with it as a rental, which he surely is. Strange how the Tigers are unloading even though they're really not out of a wild card. Can you imagine Pirate fans reaction if Neal were taking this approach. They'd want to lynch him. That said, I think the Tigers are doing the right thing.

I like the move. It was a fair trade for both parties. Soria has put up great numbers this year, though some of his peripherals suggest he hasn't been quite as good as his numbers show (he's been very lucky on strand rate and batting average on balls in play, but unlucky in home rate on fly balls). Regardless, a top 4 out of the bullpen of Melancon/Watson/Hughes/Soria is much better than Melancon/Watson/Hughes/Bastardo.

As for Jones, he was a decent prospect, with the potential to stick at SS. But the Bucs currently have Mercer and Kang at the MLB level, and a couple top prospects in Cole Tucker and Kevin Newman behind him in the minors. So they really had a lot more middle infielders throughout the system than they need, Jones was a luxury (and if I were to choose a guy I'm willing to part ways with, it's a guy who struggles with his strikeout rate like Jones has).

Thanks for the analysis. Informative as always!

Soria may turn out to be a really good acquisition but, at this point, I have to say I'm a bit underwhelmed by the Buccos' mid season acquisitions. No doubt Hamels was too expensive, and it's unlikely the Phils would have traded him to the Buccos, but what about a guy like Price or (better yet) Leake? No doubt it's partly because I'm a Dodger fan, but I would much rather have seen Leake go to the Pirates than the Giants. The Buccos have a shot at the brass ring this year, and I think they could and should have done more before the trading deadline.
