Left hand hitting 1B. Little power, but good OPS.

Look at the bright side. He's an upgrade over that stiff Alvarez. Who, by the way, remains unsigned. I guess teams already have all the strikeouts they can use.

The Pirates would have been better off signing Pedro and sending him to winter ball to play 1B based on what they have done.

I seem to recall that Pedro refused to play winter ball last year to work on his defense. I'm not sure it would help him anyway. His issues by the end seemed to be less about polishing skills and more between his ears when the bright lights on the big stage came on.

LOL.

They tried that last year. Pedro said he "didn't need to go to winter ball to learn to play 1B".

In hindsight, that was the day they should have turned him loose.

I'm not sure this is accurate. I remember a year, I think it was 2012 that they asked him to go to winter ball after he had missed a lot of time with injury, especially late in the season, and he refused saying he wanted to work on his conditioning which resulted in his career season in 2013.

It is accurate. On the other hand, your contention about 2012 is completely....not. :)
(You can look this stuff up, if you don't remember. FWIW, Pedro never even missed time due to injury in 2012 - or 2013, for that matter....and, really, not in 2014 either - see below.
Time flies....LOL. Memories fade, but the records remain.)

It was 2014 - when he was "sat down" the last month of the season. They called it an injury - but it was basically that he became unplayable at 3B, and wasn't ready to be tried at 1B (they would work him there in pre-games, and "talked" about trying him at 1B....had him there for a couple of games - it was ugly....instead they shut him down)

He hit about .200 through July and August....and was treating every ground ball to 3B as if it was an IED.

After shutting him down the last week of August (he had 1 appearance after late August.....he pinch hit.....he struck out - swinging and missing on three pitches).

They asked him to go to winter ball...get playing time at 1B, so that MAYBE he could be a useful baseball player.

Pedro said "No".

That is what happened......you can look it up. :)

Anyway....all old history at this point.

Hopefully this Jaso kid......and the AAAA guy they picked up from Milwaukee (although, I think he will be primarily at 3B until Kang is back).....and Morse.....and Goebbert (sp?).....can combine to give them something resembling MLB level play at 1B......'cause I think that is what they will be rolling with this Spring.

That's also how I remember it. I am surprised that Pedro hasn't ended up with an AL cellar dweller yet. I am guessing his asking price is too high. Wonder if Pedro is letting his agent determine his value? To think that this guy was our "everyday" 1B last year. Anything will be an improvement. I knew he was gone about midway through 2015 and my opinion was based, in part, on his refusal to learn 1B in winter ball. What a waste of talent!

Didn't he refuse several years in a row? Pirates experts??

My head wants to explode when I read stuff like this. Pedro was the worst defensive first baseman in all of baseball, and it was not even close. His WAR was near replacement level. Anything is likely an improvement. Paying him anything approaching his likely arbitration number would be a mistake. If anything, Huntington waited way too long to cut ties with him. Jaso at $4 million is much better than Pedro at $8M.

Fans of Pedro seem to be enamored with "what he was expected to be" rather than what he actually became.

These moves are just filler until Bell I ready.

For certain, and the more I learn about Jaso, the more I'm OK with this move.
