There a huge misconception by fans that there are magic plays that always work. This is simply not the case. For any play to work it takes 11 players doing their role. This is called execution. When you execute you are going to be successful. Sometimes the defense does a better job executing and it doesn't work.

When you are struggling to execute the best thing you can do is go back to the basic. Every offense has their bread and butter plays. They are the building blocks of your offense. Most of your other plays are just variation of these plays which make up your system. These are the plays they run and practice most often. Therefore you have the highest chance of success. This is the most frustrating thing for fans because you think it the same old doomed play. Most teams might only run 15-20 unique plays a game. What they mainly do is run then out of different formations and personnel groupings to get the best matchup possible to execute.

Penn State has executed terribly for the most part. When they do you can see the potential. Barkley long run is a perfect example. Everyone did their job. However far to often one or two player miss an assignment. I know people want to do more but until they get the basic done there not much they are going to be able to do.
