Well we have seen the master plan. Just no movement on it outside of the projects initially named.

They are reviewing the alternative plan as we speak (type).

Highlights include-

reducing seating to 60,000
tearing out paved lots and replanting with grass
reviewing fans' social media and weeding out complainers

At this time, it isn't feasible because the Athletic Department has not received enough donor commitments to justify moving forward with the plan? Still waiting for CR66 to step up to the plate and fund the football stadium renovations?

All universities usually keep these plans quiet until they have procured donor commitments to fund at least 50 of the costs. Gotta believe that is where PSU is right now on the project. It's called the quiet phase.

One other problem, the university cannot sanction a bake sale due to health and safety concerns.

Well if that’s the holdup, let me hit the ATM and get that first $50 for them.

True, but to put things into perspective, the focus is on Phase I here. That includes, IIRC, new facilities for the tennis teams, a new swimmin' hole, and a training center for the money-losing sports. I also seem to recall that when Barbour made her presentation in March 2017 she said that detailed plans for Phase I would be unveiled and/or construction would begin on certain elements in 2018. We're well into 2018. Also, this Plan was announced in late 2015, so it's not as if they stated soliciting donors yesterday...or maybe they have.

Tennis, Natatorium, Jeffrey Field, and the olympic sports facility were the Phase 1 projects, IIRC.

I’m not sure what their internal preference order might be within that list, though - I’d think you could attack Jeffrey Field the quickest, or the Natatorium if they decide to build new near the outdoor track. The Olympic sport facility and tennis both would require a whole lot more demolition and maneuvering before you can even start construction. Wouldn’t be surprised if Jeffrey was first - it looks like the cheapest project on the list and probably has the shortest completion time.

I wonder if Sandy's expertly-crafted, comprehensive document will make reference to "swimmin' hole" and "a training center for money-losing sports". Such terminology may not have the desired impact.

Jeffrey has been on the plan since before 2011 and was derailed. It’s ridiculous we have a national champion soccer program that has to take showers somewhere else and have to pee in portos. Forget the “master plan” integration and get it done. Far lesser teams have far greater facilities and it did nothing to elevate them. Time to reward a consistent contender.

Funding is a major hurdle for facilities to house certain sports unless a school is lucky enough to have wealthy alums who participated in them. There is a reason that the current natatorium is named after Ernie McCoy, and it's not because he wrote the largest check.......or maybe he did

Barbour's email is asb25@psu.edu. Tell her to send the bill to you and I'm sure that she'll get cracking on a new soccer facility right away.

No varsity sport at Penn State has waited longer for a substantial facilities upgrade than Swimming & Diving. We've lost good head coaches (John Hargis now at Pitt, Bill Dorenkott now at tOSU) who grew tired of waiting for a new/renovated Natatorium. If we had a modern 50-meter Olympic pool and 10-meter platform diving well we could probably recruit with the best in the B1G (Indiana [#2 men's], Michigan, tOSU, Minnesota currently ranked in Top 25 for both men's and women's S&D).

This would make a great venue for our curling team.

And lose more money in the process.

She spent Cal. Into a big financial hole. IMO, the risk is that she does the same thing here. Worst part, without repercussions for her.

Barron is reviewing the plan immediately after he finishes the review of Freeh's report.

The repercussions were that she was fired from her job at Cal, but it's left with 95 years of debt service. What's frightening is that I think it was just that track record that got her hired by PSU. They have to a least put in the effort/appearance of attempting to raise the money from donors, but if not BOHICA.

Good plan. If only I was aware that’s how it worked before.

Incidentally it was budgeted for without a major donor in 2011. The estimates came in a bit higher than planned and the then AD was waiting for new estimates and changes. Then Nov 2011 happened. It didn’t need the major donor before and not every project needs it.
