From the '60s on these names stand out to me as college football national play-by-play announcers and I'm probably forgetting others that belong in the poll. Please feel free to mention them.

In fact I will rank them:

1. Keith Jackson
2. Gus Johnson
3. Bill Fleming
4. Al Michaels
5. Brad Nessler
6. Lindsey Nelson
7. Jim Simpson
8. Lee Grosscup
9. Gary Bender
10. Don Criqui

And the worst:

1. Chris Schenkel
2. Brent Musberger
3. Tim Brant

I'm for the guy that used to do the Steelers. Was it Jack Fleming?
Speaking of the Steelers......caught about 1/4 of this week's Steelers game on the radio.

Hadn't realized how BAD Hillgrove had gotten (is he "not well"?)
It was every bit as bad (if not worse) than when Fran Fisher was on the radio - - - - - he'd call the play - and you had no idea:
what happened / down-and-distance / where the ball was
because every aspect of his play-call was "incongruent"

Al Michaels did college football play-by-play?

This poll isn't complete without Pam Ward.

Not sure if she is play by play or not... but she's the best.

Always liked Mike Patrick.
I am old enough to remember Chris Schenkel, and he was very good.
Keith is the Man.

I like Chris Schenkel, apparently the only one. It may be age related. I recall waiting all week for the ABC College Football game of the week back when there were only three networks. "Oh, the pomp and pageantry of college football!!!". Like Monday Night Football, the ubiquitousness of football has really hurt the big games. We'd get food and gather. ABC would spend a lot of time watching the bands warm up and the coaches talk. It was a big deal.

That was my vote.

Couple of comments ...

Keith Jackson is the best, hands down. He noses out Ray Scott (Connellsville PA native I believe) who could say more with less words than anyone.

Never really liked Chris Schenkel and I believe that it was because he never could be critical of anyone or any team. As I've grown up, I realize that is a true artform.

Someone mentioned Jack Fleming ... years ago, I heard him being interviewed on AM radio here in Pittsburgh - he was talking about how he grew up in Morgantown. He said that when he was very young, his mama or grandma took him to the back window which looked out over the Mon River and Old Mountaineer Field. She said, "do you see that team over there ... that's Pitt and you will hate them forever".

Chris Schenkel was horrible with football, but the best of all time in pro bowling. LOVED those old ABC bowling tournaments...Johnny Petraglia, Wayne Webb, Dick Weber, etc...

I'll make sure Jerry hears about your comments on Fran. The Fisher family is one of the most respected families in State College.

LOL

You make sure and do that Gunsie.....I'm sure it will be a shock to hear that Fran Fisher announced games with a "unique charm"

Then you can add some "names" to your "lists"

Make sure all your buddies have a chance to put their names on your list:

I'm with ya on that choice. Loved when he and Bud Wilkinson were together.

Chris schenkel was the best of all time in my opinion. For him to be out of anyone'seen top five is crazy in my estimation. You would have had to experience what Oblivax and myself did in the middle to late sixties to rhe early 1970's. Bud Wilkinson and Schenkel called all the games of the century. 1966 Notre Dame - MSU. 69 Texas - Arkansas. 71 Nebraska - Oklahoma. They were magic together. I love Keith Jackson but i would never want him over Schenkel and Wilkinson. I liked Frank Broyles paired with Keith

You can add Charley Jones to that list. He and
Jimmy Cefalo were terrific in the desert for the
Miami take down in 86. Unfortunately, Bob Griese
was also in the booth to detract from the broadcast.

I guess since you said "favorite" then there may be some bias due to era or something. If this was best or most iconic, then there is no need to provide an option other than Keith Jackson...

Ray Scott. Not close for me. I understand that I'm supposed to worship Keith Jackson, but his work with Frank Broyles is hard for me to forget, especially in the 1983 Sugar Bowl.

I'll tell ya, Gus Johnson is moving up my list. Loved his call of the B1G Championship game. His "Barkley!" scream on the TD pass to go ahead. The "They didn't make it! One for the ages!" Gives me chills.

On the same level as Fran's "NoFlagsNoFlagsNoFlags!"

I agree that he is growing on me. Wasn't high on him when Fox first started doing college football games, but aside from him screaming a little too much for my taste, his excitement comes through at the right times more often and he seems to appreciate the moment.

Not that I would rate him higher than many others on the list, but I always liked Dick Enberg, who did the Rose Bowl games for a few decades.

Enberg was the person who used the term "Cool as the other side of the pillow" back in the day. I remember him using that phrase when talking about Warren moon when he and Washington were in the Rose in the late 70s. Stuart Scott later picked it up and got all the credit for it.

Enberg retired at the same time that Vin Scully did, so there was not a lot of media attention to his retirement. A good, solid announcer who made few mistakes, not flashy (his signature phrase was the simple "oh my!" for a big play or moment) but who did not detract from the game and appreciated the traditions of the game.

Growing up watching Chris Schenkle and Bud Wilkinson made for a fun Saturday afternoon. They would demonstrate certain formations and plays pre-game with these little plastic torsos without arms and number stickers on their backs. The definition of quaint. With I formation teams, Schenkle would say "Steve Owens lines up in the tail of the tandem". Brings a smile to my face.

Billy has lost his fastball for sure. He is equally lousy on Pitt football. He's all right on hoops because he's close to the court but for football he can't see and screws everything up. Tunch Ilkin's back is broke carrying Hillgrove.

I know he's a legend, but it's time.
