Saints linebacker Michael Mauti’s season is over after doctors recommended surgery to treat his ulcerative colitis.

The Saints placed Mauti on the non-football injury and illness list earlier this week. Mauti, who will be a free agent after the season, told reporters he plans to resume playing football next season.

Mauti, 26, is in his second season with the Saints. He was a seventh-round pick of the Vikings in 2013 and played in 23 games over two seasons in Minnesota.

He was voted a special teams captain this season by his teammates with the Saints. He played in eight games this season and played in all 16 last year after the Saints claimed him via waivers.

Ulcerative colitis is an intestinal disease; Mauti was diagnosed with it during his senior season at Penn State. He said he believes opting for surgery now is the “best move” for his long-term health.

“It’s something that I played through as long as I could this season,” he said. “I gave everything I had to this team, and I emptied the tank here.

“I can lay my head down at night and have no regrets about that, but at the same time, I got to look out for my long-term health here. And I think this is the smartest move for me moving forward so I can be a contributor again in full.”

I wish him the best. I had the surgery he’s about to have. He should feel significantly better once all is said, and done.

That's a tough, painful disease. I'm sure he's doing the smart thing here. Here's hoping for a 100% recovery.

Wish him all the best in his recovery. He was just so good for us in every way during a very difficult time. A true Lion!

Thanks for sharing. I wonder what happened that he decided this was the time?

What Ulcerative Colitis Surgery Involves

About 25% to 40% of people with ulcerative colitis (UC) may eventually need surgery. Surgery usually removes the colon (large intestine) and rectum. The lowest part of the small intestine can then be attached to a hole made in the abdominal wall to let waste leave the body and empty into an external bag. Another procedure can be done to create an internal waste pouch that allows stool to be passed through the anus.

Most often, surgery is recommended if ulcerative colitis inflammation and ulcers (right) can't be controlled with medication or other treatments. Surgery also may be needed if you're having emergency complications of UC such as severe bleeding or tears in the colon. Some people choose to have surgery if UC is affecting their ability to work and stay active.

May be no other guy from this program I will pull more for in life than Mauti. Good luck to him with this procedure.

I suffered from ulcerative colitis for about 18 years. 20 years ago I had my colon removed and my small intestine was pulled down and made into a j pouch. It is all indoor plumbing. Although my pouch becomes inflamed from time to time, life is much easier. When my pouch becomes inflamed, it's called "pouchititis". Kangaroos and I get it.

My best to Michael Mauti. Thank you for all you did for PSU. Remember it is a chronic disease and you learn how live with it. It's a great life.
