Players, coaches, media and agents aliked flocked to Holuba Hall on Tuesday for Penn State’s 2019 NFL pro day.

The Nittany Lions had 14 players in total represented including both big names and some unexpected players.

The full list included: Ryan Bates, Jake Cooper, Koa Farmer, Kevin Givens, Connor McGovern, Trace McSorley, Shareef Miller, Amani Oruwariye, Miles Sanders, Nick Scott, Jonathan Thomas, DeAndre Thompkins, Kyle Vasey and Chasz Wright.

The majority of eyes were on McSorley who is looking to find his way into the back end of the draft. He’s projected by most to go anywhere from the sixth round to undrafted.

McSorley went through a full scripted throwing program that lasted about 30 minutes. In that time he showed off impressive accuracy in short and intermediate routes and connected on a pair of 40-plus yard deep balls.

In total, just four balls hit the ground during the routine, each of which were thrown a bit high.

The real stars of the show, however, were Sanders and Thompkins.

Sanders, who had an outstanding showing at the NFL Draft Combine in Indianapolis, backed that up with another impressive performance where he showed off his hands and route running.

His performances over the last month have moved him firmly into the discussion as a day two pick in April’s draft.

Thompkins was not a combine invite and struggled in his senior year, but the North Carolina native impressed with his route running as well and made a number of good catches during red zone work.

On the defensive side of the ball, Amani Oruwariye showed well in drills, but Nick Scott stole the show.

Scott tested extremely well, posting a 41-inch vertical jump and running an unofficial 4.43 40-yard dash at 5-foot-11 and 200 pounds.

While Scott has been up and down on the field since the move from running back to safety, his athleticism, intelligence and strong character make him a good candidate to become a longtime special teams ace at the next level.

Farmer also checked in with strong testing numbers, posting 24 bench reps, a 4.48 40-yard dash time (unofficially) and a 37-inch vertical jump.

Still laugh when I see these scouts site there timing the 40 with their hand held watches. Like they are going to be more accurate than the fully automatic timing system used at every pro day. Come on guys, just believe the time from the system. No way can you be accurate using a stop watch with no starting gun.

What would have happened if we weren't thin at LB and he would have played at his natural position? The kid did what was best for the team and the coaches kept him there. He's a true team player.
My beef is with the coaches for keeping him out there this past year to the detriment ofothe team, especially younger players.

Understood. But sometimes playing time is EARNED by attending class, getting there on time, and playing behind players like Koa that are doing the right things off the field before you become a full time starter.

It's truly a lot easier to say this after the fact. Sure, in retrospect, it sounds like a solid reward / learning experience. If we win another B10 title or two in the next 2-3 years, get into the playoff... Yeah, Franklin is going to look like a genius.

Listen to the CJF "elite" speech again in the context of my last post.

"At six feet and 200 pounds, McSorley may lack ideal size, but he has every intangible NFL teams want. His command of the offense at Penn State was without question, and he can rattle off the particulars of practically every play the Nittany Lions ran last season. He also can explain exactly what he did wrong when plays went awry. He’ll impress NFL coaches in meetings with his ability to explain why offensive concepts work or don’t work, and he’ll also be able to pick up new schemes quickly.

McSorley must work on arm strength and mechanics to convince NFL coaches he can fit the ball into windows that will get much tighter at the next level. But if he can, his improvisational skills combined with his ability to master an offense could make him a valuable backup for a team like the Browns, Chiefs or Texans. McSorley may not have all the tools Baker Mayfield, Patrick Mahomes or Deshaun Watson possess, but he’s athletic enough to be an acceptable facsimile in a pinch and might be good enough to work his way into a starting job somewhere in a few years."

SIAP, but Troy Reeder had a nice showing at his pro day. Would have been nice to have him the past couple years.
