not quite sure where she will end up. Waiting on 3 Ivy's and got a full ride to William and Mary (we live in va), but regardless she is ecstatic and it is her first choice as of now, although finances may (sadly) play a part in it. She also got into Notre dame but 68k per year def not happening!

Wow. She's obviously an intelligent young lady. It's good to have choices. I hope she makes a great one. All the best to her.

Congrats! My nephew is waiting. If it's a go, it's likely PSU. If not, he may elect to come visit me in Ann Arbor. In as much as I'd really appreciate him coming here, PSU is the place for him.

As you note, finances do play a part in it.

Congratulations to your daughter. No bad choices there. My daughter graduated from W&M in 2007. Thoroughly enjoyed her time there and is a dedicated W&M, senior acct rep in DC Twitter office and doing very well financially. It was a great choice for her.

I have a sr in high school as well, still waiting to hear from a host of schools.. .curious though, were you expecting some merit dough perhaps from Notre Dame? Else why would you apply there at all - same goes for the Ivy's, they ain't cheap either.

Congrats....my daughter is Schreyer's grad and is currently a second year law student at an Ivy League school...Schreyer's carries some weight...grad/law schools know what they are getting if a kid applies and has Schreyer's on the resume....best of luck to her. And bless Sue and Joe for starting the Paterno Fellows....my daughter would not have had the chance without them....

My niece was offered a full academic ride to Duke but chose ND and had to pay only $3000 a year after aid. Her choice was a Catholic thing/dad loves ND thing.

I know this is off topic and I don't want to take anything away from the academic achievements our kids BUT when I hear incredible aid numbers being thrown around, it makes me wonder either a) the parents don't have a very high annual income or b) they have ZERO in savings or c) all of the above.

Sorry but I'm "livin' the dream" and writing the out of state checks.
In my niece's case, she's the eldest of four. Her dad was a high school AD and her mom worked part time as a waitress while still raising the children (later the mom, my sister, went to college part time and graduated). The need was there plus my niece was third in her class at a very competitive private Catholic prep school. She also scored just shy of 1400 on her SATs. The combination of those factors got her the scholarships/financial assistance. This was in the late 80s, early 90s. She graduated ND with a degree in Chemical Eng. and later earned an M.S. from Drexel.

The other three children all have at least a bachelor's degree, two with advanced degrees. All received financial aid of some sort.

Parents who raised four children on an AD's or teacher's wage in the 70s on did not have savings. They lived week to week. Their money was accumulated after all the kids were done with school. They are very comfortable now, in their 70s. Their experience is one reality.

Sounds like she has a few excellent options, and may have additional options. You should be proud.

I wish her the best of luck as she navigates through the options before her, and makes her decision.

No. Schools pay big money for good students...real big money.

Pet peeve...Schreyer not Schreyer's

And heavily endowed schools like Amherst and Williams will give needy, excellent students all the aid necessary, full tuition and more, if they want the student. At least that's what I've been told by a well-informed person.
