was just doing some research on admissions for PSU/University Park... Impressive scores, rank, etc.. Pa residents should be proud to have the two large universities with such quality academics..Stats are below:

PSU PITT
Avg gpa 3.57 3.98
ACT 27 29
SAT 1181 1274
acc rate 55% 54%
top ten 36% 53%

stats from each schools website and are for 2014 freshman

As you can see both schools represent very well... Just happens to be one is a bit better....Relax guys just seeing if your paying attention.. Both Are good and I realize entering stats are just part of the story.. What I really would like to know is if the entering stats for PSU have change in any way following the Sandusky scandal? Serious question...

U.S. News and World Report (FWIW):

Penn State - 48th Nationally
Pitt - 62nd Nationally

Interesting to note that you've provided what is essentially a profile of your average incoming student at each school. USN&WR evaluates the 'education' provided.

eyebugs, you come off looking like a fool. I have looked at dozens of college rankings, from US News to Best Colleges, and I cannot find a single one that ranks Pitt ahead of Penn State. Oh, I forgot, the famous "eyebugs rankings" is an exception. I bear no animosity toward Pitt. My wife is a Pitt grad, but even she thinks Penn State is the better school. That is why both our daughters are Penn State grads, even though Pitt offered both scholarships and Penn State offered none. To other Penn State posters here, I am sorry I engaged the troll (it's a personalty flaw).

Don't bore him with details he can't comprehend. It's not his fault.

For the record, Pitt offered my one kid a big scholarship, while PSU offered him admission.

rankings are subjective.. these stats dont lie... look it up yourself... you guys are so predictable. cant refute those numbers.. so you post attacks. I actually have a kid looking to go to university park...I also have one at pitt . and one at BC.... all great schools... It is a fact for at least the last few years it has been more difficult to get into Pitt... anyway enjoy your day..

Your stats are probably just for admitted students and therefore not useful in any way. Everyone around here (east of the Alleghenies) applies to Pitt and gets in, but nobody goes.

Sorry to hear about your Pitt kid. Family dinners must be tough on him.

College rankings are really a joke in alot of ways... For instance Pitt has the #1 PT school in the country by rankings... really? How do you know other that subjective opinions and often times the size of the school.. Not one of you has come through with statistics.. real numbers.. and no one has answered or even addressed my question... enough already... PSU is a good school.. no doubt.. but many of you get on here and act superior..just wanted to enlighten you a bit..

Rankings are generally based upon numbers, just not the ones you choose. The US News rankings are considered by nearly everyone as the most objective and reliable. They have Pitt 14 spots behind Penn State (62 vs 48). But, enough is enough. I usually don't engage trolls, and I will not engage further. If you in your "la la world" believe Pitt is a better school, so be it.

That avg GPA is BS. Pitt's football team's GPAs alone would bring the average down into the 2s.

Most people I know that went to Pitt did so because they weren't accepted to PSU main campus.

Does "PT" stand for "National Championships"?

You haven't come up with real numbers, either. You gave us a bunch of application stats that mean squat. In all likelihood, the top quintile of Pitt's stats actually ended up matriculating at PSU.

Well rankings are "generally" based on numbers... well what are they? You cant even see how subjective your own post is... There are all sorts of rankings which both schools will do well on but I only supplied true numbers supplied by both universities.. nothing subjective about that.. onlly the conclusions.. see you all in september.. next year..

LOL. Those numbers are meant to guide applicants on their chances of acceptance, but are not profiles of a matriculating class. You're kind of dopey. Pitt grad?

FWIW, I believe even though they are often presented as "University Park" numbers, the numbers provided by Penn State for admissions statistics include those students spending two years at a branch campus and two at UP. In other words, those students who will be in majors that are UP majors and not World Campus, Capital College, University College, Behrend College, etc.

I have seen the out-of-state student numbers for PSU as well, and they are generally better than the overall numbers. When a school has to admit a certain number of in-state students, out of state numbers can often be a better indicator of academics because the competition for slots becomes greater.

SAT scores, class rank etc are not the only factors colleges use in the admission process. I have been told that Penn State strives for a certain geographic diversity around the state (and out of state), holding higher standards for areas with high application rates, while perhaps admitting students from areas of the state with lower application rates via a different set of standards.

For example, the best high schools in the state may get a lower % of their students admitted than a lower rated school from the hinterland or urban area, provided there is other evidence that the students from these areas can be successful.

I don't know for a fact if any of that is true, but this was told to me once by a HS guidance counselor that I know.

Half the freshaman class at Pitt had a GPA higher than 3.98? Is that out of 4?

How are all these 4.0 students only getting 1274 on their SAT's?

True there are many factors involved.. agree with your post...This is there area where WVU will always look bad.. Mandate to take kids from WV where much of the public education is very poor.. Dont know the mandates for Pitt or PSU.. Neither are true state schools like IUP or Clarion etc.. but I would think each would have similar mandates.. dont know for sure... A good education can be had at either..I didnt say the admissions were easy at PSU just recently it is a bit more difficult to get into pitt.. we can go back and forth as to wether its a sig difference.. Certain majors like engineering are better at PSU.. no doubt.. others are more competitive at Pitt... The point is many PSU folks look down at Pitt academically for no reason and may be base on old ideas..Maybe its an urban campus. dont know

no both those are weighted as per the university website... Sat scores didnt include writing and was just verbal and math...

nope just entering freshman at University park.. dont have to apologize for those numbers. they are good and like I said there are many things that go into it.. intent was to demonstrate to those on here who think pitt is some lesser education... not referring to you or anyone poster...

One has to love these "my dog is bigger than your dog" debates. They are always scintillating.

Isn't PSU required by law to accept the top few students of every PA high school? Does Pitt have such a rule?

I was under the impressions that the two schools are roughly similar; with PSU edging Pitt in some departments, and vice-versa. Both are strong academically.

Actually, to be honest, does undergraduate eduation really vary that much across different universities?

What about Pit Bradford? Or Titusville?

I'm fine with a lower GPA group at PSU, means they get more well rounded kids not just a bunch of nerds who wont go to football games on Saturdays? Wait a minute......... thats why their attendance is so low...

That's a good question. It depends on your major. If you're in engineering or sciences, getting involved in research is valuable and a nationally known department can be helpful. My one daughter spent half her undergraduate life in the Materials Science lab --- and guess what, now she runs a lab. The fact that PSU is a great research university was important for her.

For business or liberal arts or education, research isn't so important to the undergrads, so there may not be a great benefit of going to a giant research university like PSU or Pitt -- you can get the same quality coursework at Ship or Bloom or West Chester for a lot less money.

On the other hand the environment where you go to school is important. Some kids want cities, some kids want a more rural PSU like campus.

I'm personally very grateful for the choices we have in Pa. I had one kid go to Penn, another to PSU, and a third is at West Chester. They all had great experiences and earned quality degrees. I was thrilled that one of our kids wanted to go to PSU -- but would have been proud if one of my kids went to Pitt.

I know that PSU's physics department is a shining star -- likewise, Pitt has a top-tier philosophy department.

Indeed, as a both a STEM and a humanities major, going to a research university has been a great experience for my STEM major. Somehow, the department is very tight-knot for my other major, so that's also been great.

As for rural vs. urban, I agree that that's a draw/turn-off for some. My uncle was the son of a PA dairy farmer and felt right at home at PSU and DTS.

IMO the biggest difference is the amount of scholarship money offered by both schools. Pitt is much more liberal with theirs while PSU is near impossible to get a dime out of Shields Building. I don't know why that is, but PSU is consistently in the Top 10 of applications received which tells me kids want to go there.

PSU "folks" look down on pitt academically because US News and World Report has ranked Pitt significantly below Penn State (12 to 25 levels) for the past 20 or more years!!

If Pitt has a major in "Pathetic Trolling" then there is at least one degree that they are superior in. But, your fellow alumnus, in other degrees, are probably embarrassed that you identify as Pitt.

One thing I have realized, is that if you have to try to convince someone that you are just as good as them, it usually means that you are not as good as them.
