PSU Coaching Tree

Cody Law is now an Assistant Coach at UPJ. Not in the last 20 years, but
Dave Adams comes to mind, also.
Tom Teagarden is another blast from the past. There are a few familiar faces in the photo in the attached article. Who can name them?

That's the photo of the PIAA champions in 1969 when Wade Schalles pinned John Chapman. Schalles is 3rd from the left in the rear row. There are a lot of good wrestlers in that class including Bill Luckenbaugh who was NCAA College Div champion and Kevin Love who I think had a good shot at being a D1 champion except for an unfortunate injury. I also remember Bob Sacavage from Mt Carmel because I dated his ex-girlfriend!

From the 1957 team; Sid Nodland, John Johnston, John Pepe, Dave Adams, Earl Poust, Sam Markle.

Jeez, it's almost easier to make a list of the former starters who haven't become coaches.

Washington, PA guy here. Blocking the border where the buckeyes enter.
Good job! In high school days used to visit Dallas Pike area to pick up some 3.2 if we couldn't hit a local speakeasy. If not there, south of Uniontown. Those days long gone now.

Just realized this thread is so old.

Devin Schnupp and Cenzo at a minimum need added to the list.

Yes, Devin Schnupp has become the head coach at his alma mater Warwick. Warwick also includes Narkiewicz, Cummings, Pearsal and Thompson.

What is a volunteer assistant coach? Do they truly not get paid? Is it just a step towards becoming a paid coach somewhere? Moving across the country to volunteer seems very dedicated, but a financial nightmare. I don’t see that position names in other sports. I have seen grad assistant coaches, consultants etc, but not volunteer. Not trying to derail this thread, but I have always meant to ask every time I see that term.

It just means he's not paid by the varsity program.

It was originally intended as a coaching intro for newer grads to get their foot in the door, possibly while enrolled in grad school (and thus getting employee tuition discounts). And that's often still true, but not always.

Metcalf was rumored to make $150k when he was volunteer assistant for Dresser at Iowa State. Metcalf also coached at the RTC, which paid his salary.

Thanks!

I re-read this thread and realized that if we go back more than 20 years, there is a BIG hole in the list of names. Andy Matter - PSU assistant coach under Bill Koll!

Bryan Heller, Head Coach at Rumson Fair Haven HS, NJ, his Alma Mater. His 182 pounder, Nick Addison, just signed with Stanford.

Jack Decker, Head Coach Seton Hall Prep, NJ, his Alma Mater, currently ranked 12th in NJ..
Heller's 182 pounder from last season, Jack Kelly, is now on the PSU team; and his 152 pounder from last season, Max Brignola, is now on the Lehigh team. Kind of ironic, since when Bryan came to PSU in fall 2003, his high school teammate, Patrick Berger, went to Lehigh to wrestle.

I thought the biggest difference between the "volunteer" coach position and the other positions was that the volunteer assistant coaches can't participate in recruiting activities, per the NCAA.

I believe the volunteer assistant CAN and is paid by the school, now.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.
