PSU hires Joe Lorig as Special Teams coach

Joe Lorig will be Penn State’s special teams coordinator, sources told FootballScoop on Thursday.

Lorig spent the past three seasons as the special teams coordinator and outside linebackers coach at Memphis. He had agreed to join Matt Wells’ new staff at Texas Tech as special teams coordinator, but will now reverse field and head to State College.

Lorig has also coordinated special teams at Arizona State and spent the 2008-11 seasons as the defensive coordinator at Central Washington.

He will replace Phil Galiano, who left to become the assistant special teams coordinator for the New Orleans Saints.

He does expand the recruiting footprint, but he doesn't seem to have the same reputation as Seider did coming in.

He does have merit as a Special Teams coach and plenty of defensive experience. He's stepping into more talent than he's ever been around.

There’s only a handful of assistants in the country who have Seider’s reputation, though.

Not a knock on his abilities, just awareness of what we got in him. If he can bring some consistency to that portion of the team, I'll consider it a win.

Looks like a great hire. This guy is a ST specialist and did a fantastic job at Memphis. They returned kicks for TDs but they didn't allow a TD on kickoffs or punts for three years. And his placekicker and punter were up for major national awards.

Good job Franklin and presumably good job to PSU giving Franklin the salary that was necessary to make a hire of this type.

I bet you see real progress this year on ST. Let's hope the receivers have a bounceback year too.

Specialist? Hmmm, not so much. Most of his experience is as a defensive assistant coach. In his four years coaching STs, he's also coached a defensive position. And as far as coaching his punter and kicker......probably not much; they just happened to be his responsibility.

That doesn't mean he won't be a great hire, but let's not overdue the cartwheels.

Given his background, he might be better suited to coach at OSU:

Lorig earned both his bachelor’s degree in law enforcement (1995) and his master’s degree in correctional administration (1997) from Western Oregon.

I like him even more. A man after my own heart!

Well one thing on his agenda for next year is to recruit a punter since blake gillikin will graduate. Great he has Cali ties.

It will be an improvement if we can recover an onside kick. What an embarrassment that was. I was happy every time the opposition kicked it deep.

I don't get the excitement over this hire. Lorig is ranked #712 among all college coaches. And don't give me his ranking will rise now that he's been hired by Penn State or that Franklin is always early in discovering talented coaches.

Was that a 247 ranking? I don't like his offer list:rolleyes:

No idea where you get 712 from. His ST at Memphis were in the 25 and PSU was no where near that with Galiano, I call that a upgrade. KJ Hamler is going to love this coach.

Seems like a solid hire. If he can get special teams to be average, that is worth a game or two. If he can get them to be elite, it is a talent showcase.
