PSU Master Plan and Golf?

Any insight as to the master plan including improvements to the golf courses? They're continually in need of repairs for fairways, greens, etc. PSU has had some quality players in recent years - three qualified for last US Open. Would be nice to see some money thrown that way.

Blue isn't very good for a "championship" course. I much prefer Toftrees and Mt View (Elks) over it. My friends and i are returning in June for another golf weekend and for the 1st time ever we aren't playing Blue or White. There just isn't much about it that is interesting or memorable.

Doubtful. The course was redesigned and renovated in 2007. New practice facility was also built in 2007. They built a new club house in 2010. With the decline in golf play I doubt they are going to put a ton of money in a venue that hosts one varsity competition a year.

The Blue and White course designs are pretty pedestrian I'm told (I'm not a serious golfer), but there was someone posting here several weeks ago who recently worked at the courses claiming that they are badly under-resourced and therefore the maintenance suffers. That the comparatively small staff is doing the best it can with its very limited resources.

I've been asking myself if the priority for a new or upgraded soccer facility might mean moving Jeffrey Field to the west side of Atherton, thereby displacing several White Course holes. The MSOC and WSOC locker rooms and coaches offices are in Rec Hall. The White Course then becomes a a nine-hole course or maybe just as few practice holes, thereby reducing the maintenance challenge. How badly does PSU really need two 18-hole courses?

Just idle speculation by me.

The old Blue was interesting playing a Saturday morning qualifier @ 7:30 am hung over, in a 25 mph wind w/ flurries, w/ a PSU FB game waiting for you. All the interesting I needed under those conditions.

The soccer facility will remain where it is. The plan is to build a field house that will house locker rooms and other facilities for the team at the stadium.

Confession time....I stayed for a summer session one year. Me and a couple other guys would play the front side of the White Course and be on the back side before the club house opened. I lived in the dorms(Hartranft) and we would finish 18 and be back before they finished serving breakfast, at the dorm. Can't beat playing for free. Those were the days.

I miss the old White Course. Shot a 74 on that course late one summer afternoon a long long time ago.
Those courses get played hard!!
Wish they would get a cash infusion!!
WE ARE!!!

Our House at Hartranft had an intramural golf team. Word got back to the captain of the team that I played golf. He came to me and asked me what my level of play was. I told him I was OK. I guess he didn't believe me as he said why don't we go out and play(before I offer you to be on the team). We played the White Course and I was even par after 8. Knock a ball OB on 9(the old 9) and ended up shooting 75. I made the team. White Course was pretty easy back then.

What are the rates for a round...is the MT View private?....there are no rates on the website...when I come to PSU I play Toftrees....the Blue and White are nowhere near as nice...

How can the courses be in such disrepair? Do we still have a turf grass management program? Every year we had "turf bums" in our dorms for winter and spring semesters. Don't they get practical experience working on our own golf courses?

Blue isn't in bad shape. It's just not very interesting. Not much elevation change or water. Greens are large and rather flat. Bunkering isn't very challenging. It's just not a memorable layout.

I once heard that Arnold Palmer offered to do a Signature Palmer Course and waive his fee. Penn State turned it down as just paying expenses was too much. If Spanier and/or Paterno were golfers we wouldn't be having this discussions. What's disappointing is how much Penn State makes from its golf course grasses. Once saw an article where it exceeded football revenue (but that may have been before BIG Network). It's like a military post golf course. If the CO is a golfer more funds are expended on the course or so it seems.
