PIRATES TO HOST WVU VS. PENN STATE GAME

The Pittsburgh Pirates announced today the team will host the Penn State University and West Virginia University baseball game on Wednesday, May 10 at PNC Park, with first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m.

The game will be a make-up of the originally scheduled Wednesday, March 22 game that was to be played at Penn State’s Medlar Field at Lubrano Park, but was postponed due to weather.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for the Pirates to showcase these two great collegiate baseball programs at PNC Park, one of the most iconic ballparks in Major League Baseball” said Pirates President Frank Coonelly. “Our organization has so many alumni from and supporters of both of these outstanding institutions that it is truly an honor to have these two schools showcase their talents at PNC Park before their large fan bases in Pittsburgh.”

“We are extremely humbled and excited to have this opportunity to play at PNC Park against such a quality opponent as West Virginia University,” said Penn State Head Coach Rob Cooper. “The Pittsburgh Pirates are always leading the way when it comes to promoting baseball and education in this region of the country. We are excited to take part in what we all hope will be a regular event. Thank you to all within the Pirates organization who have helped to make this possible.”

“Our program is very excited for the opportunity to play at PNC Park.” said WVU Head Coach Randy Mazey. “I’d like to thank the Nutting family, Frank Coonelly and the Pirates front office for helping facilitate the event. We look forward to a great game against Penn State in the best ballpark in Major League Baseball.”

Tickets to the game are available for $10 for the general public, $7 for Penn State and WVU season ticket holders, partners, donors, alumni and faculty as well as Pirates season ticket members, and $2 for students of either university. Tickets will be general admission and are available at Pirates.com/collegebaseball.

Fans can enter PNC Park through the Peoples Gas Home Plate Gate at the corner of Mazeroski Way and General Robinson starting at 6 p.m. Limited concession stands will be open on the main concourse.

The May 10 matchup at PNC Park will complete the two-game series between the Mountaineers and Nittany Lions. Game one is scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. first pitch on Tuesday, May 9 at Monongalia County Ballpark in Morgantown, W. Va.

PNC should look very familiar to our guys since the dimensions and outfield wall configurations, aside from the right field wall height, are identical to Medlar.

I'd also love to see a neutral site PSU/WVU football game at Heinz.

Thanks for the information john. It's a neat thing. HOWEVER...the press release says: "This is a tremendous opportunity for the Pirates to showcase these two great collegiate baseball programs at PNC Park..." What? We have a great program? Who knew? As for WVU, they're better but they haven't been to the NCAA tournament in over 20 years. Ah well, I still like the idea.:)

That caught my attention too. The news release gushing and ass kissing always makes me chuckle. "Great baseball programs". "We're honored". "We're humbled". "We're excited". "We're grateful". "It's a great opportunity". I think all those generic phrases are simply copied and pasted into every similar news release.

That should bring out a great crowd. Oh wait. Opera Season.

Fortunately not, although "Death of a Salesman" is playing at 8:00 PM that night at the O'Reilly Theater which is right across the river, so parking may be tight if you have a Bentley or a Rolls. I encourage you to have your driver leave you off and return, regardless of which event you attend. :)

Some pitt students are putting on Death of a Program as their interpretation of Penn State Football from 2012 to 2016.

I read my culture calendar wrong. It's outdoor symphony season soon.

Looks like some of the Pitters are upset with Big Brother

Officially time to boycott the Pirates

    May 10 at PNC Park

    This is the final straw.

The Pirates have 81 home games, yet they cant TBA 2-3 September home games and let Pitt have first choice.

Narduzzi wanted to have the Spring Game on April 22 and the Pirates wouldn't accomodate.

The McClatchy group at least had a few Pitt/Duq games at PNC. Having WVU play PSU there is just too much. I am sorry but if you are a Pitt fan, I cant see how you can root for the WV Pirates.

That is some ridiculous logic. So now Pitt fans think they should have a voice in deciding who plays at PNC Park? I wasn't aware PNC was part of the Pitt physical plant. The Pitters vastly overestimate the status they hold there. The Pirates are interested in promoting the game of baseball. Imagine that.
