You guys sure you want to let stupid judges say that we have to give women’s lacrosse the same amount we give to CFB players in lieu of NIL?

It's over, it's been moving quickly in that direction and I doubt it it can be. Or not in the way we'd like it to be.
If the colleges had any backbone they’d say fine you can have the NIL. However, since you have NIL, all scholarships and other benefits (free food, free clothes, free tuition/ room and board) are now cancelled. Once the athletes see that for every athlete that gets the ridiculous $350,000 there are 1,000 others that get next to nothing and will have no scholarships to fall back on. You see how quickly this NIL nonsense gets under control.

True, but it would bring back a big dose of reality and perspective to those who claim they ‘get nothing’ now.

Actually yes it does IMO. NIL is all the rage right now and plenty of wealthy slums are spending big bucks to “help” their alma maters. However, in the end they are business men/women and I think there were be some leveling off after the kids they paid big bucks to don’t pan out or like the QB who got something like 1 million bucks and left for USC after one year. Time will tell.
I think many top college football and basketball programs "facilitate" NIL deals. If they are not, they either will be or they will fall behind. It really does threaten college football as we have known it.

It kind of does when you say that colleges should take away tuition etc. Amateurism and scholarships for D1 sports have been under the rule of the NCAA since its existence - not colleges. If you were to say the NCAA should allow colleges to not give tuition monies to students who receive NIL money from a 3rd party that’s a different suggestion than saying “colleges should…” etc.
That is absolutely the case - but again the distinction has to be made that colleges are not paying NIL money - 3rd parties are. So while people may want to rage at colleges themselves they really should turn to the NCAA and state governments that are allowing this to take place.
My personal take is twofold.
1. This is the reason I hope for a successful XFL or whatever minor league NFL comes along. It would allow those that want to get paid and not deal with the charade that is working towards a degree for 3 years.
2. Those colleges and schools that have the means and want to pay their football players need to break away from the NCAA to form their own division - Division 1+ - with standardized pay tables / salary cap / coach salary cap etc. The current “wild west” that we have now is terrible and is absolutely killing fan interest in the sport.
What judges are fielding a case that suggests that? NIL is an individuals right to use their name image and likeness. Title IX has nothing to do with NIL. Title IX is institution focused.

The ncaa is the governing institution of the colleges in this matter. The colleges put the idiots who run the ncaa in charge….. and keep them there. The lack of leadership there has led to this mess. You want to say ‘NCAA’ instead of colleges then fine.
No. I’m saying let the ncaa and the athletes choose the model they’d like to play under- NIL or the traditional scholarship model.
I respectfully disagree. To me it doesn’t matter where the money comes from- whether it’s the traditional university based scholarship or the booster millions (organized by the athletic dept) trying to buy the best team. There are advantages and disadvantages to both systems.
I agree there are a lot of pitfalls and unintended consequences to NIL that most haven’t thought through yet. As you rightly point out- the transfer portal issues will just add to the mess.
Well, you said give nobody a scholarship. Nobody gets a scholly you will never field a team. Therefore no sports.

.Pitfalls for sure. Let's give hundreds of thousands of dollars to college aged student athletes and with that money let's impose responsibilities on those young lads. Young athletes with more money than their parents in a college setting required to do certain things in exchange for the money. What could possibly go wrong?
I don't see Penn State winning a title anytime soon. But it's not because of NIL.
Sure, NIL is changing the game, and it will allow a Texas A&M or a Tennessee to go out and buy kids and probably elevate their program. But it still comes down to coaching and development. Texas A&M bought a ton of 4/5* DL this past recruiting cycle -- do you think they're all going to stay? Do you think locker room dynamics won't take a hit? There are costs that come with NIL.
Michigan just made the CFP. They're not benefiting from this stuff anymore than we are.
ND has made multiple CFPs. Granted, their schedule is typically weaker, but still. Washington made a CFP. Michigan State made a CFP. NIL or not, there's no reason why a program like Penn State can't succeed at the highest level. It comes down to coaching.

Maybe I’m just getting old but everything I enjoy seems to be getting more complicated.
If coaching is sub optimal , and I believe it is, this change will not help us.
There are two "wrongs" that are pressuring CFB.
First, the players are allowing the schools to make millions and millions of dollars. But those players are not benefitting nearly in proportion to the benefit the schools receive.
Second, Lacrosse and women's basketball are costing the schools millions of dollars. And those players receive the same benefit that the football players receive.
Thus, NIL comes around and fixes it.
But now we have the ugliness of transfer portal and NIL, and the fans are rightly questioning, "Why am I spending both $$ and emotional energy when the whole system seems corrupt"
I'm simply saying that we ought to give a bigger scholarship to the players, but eliminate NIL.

I hear you and agree. My last two sports I watch are PSU football and wrestling. Football is teetering on the edge for me. Wrestling probably will remain interesting to me.
I see what you mean but it's not going to fix it. Look at the squawking about women's sports. I hate them and don't watch them.
It's just sports not played as well as the men. When I tell people they almost get offended. Then I remind them I can like what I like.
Look at women's basketball? I hate it. I only watch if I know a participant. Other than that it's lousy basketball.
Those who claim they get nothing are actually getting nothing. A college education in a meaningful field requires a lot of work and dedication which is rarely possible if you don't see the value.

Then we get the woman athletes complaining they want equity etc.
My point is this is going to be a disaster for college sports in a certain way. And in another way a boom for some .

That's all true, I admired Paterno for his view on education. I had to pay back student loans. My kids did too. Scholarship football players didn't .
Perhaps. On the other hand, this type of lawsuit may been inevitable. Clearly the NCAA’s hard headed stance hastened this situation.
100 thousand people did not spend millions of dollars to watch you go to chem 1 either.
Seriously? NIL exists because of a successful lawsuit. The NCAA has no ability to change that with the possible exception of recognizing them as employees and entering into a CBA (still may not eliminate the right from an individual to profit off his or her name). No one is paying a lacrosse player the same NIL money as they are paying star college football or basketball players.
Who cares? They are supposed to be student athletes, right? Last I heard app 25 NCAA D1 schools are profitable.
Wrestling is dominated by a handful of schools. It's actually one of the least competitive sports IMO.
