to NW, 6-9.

By virtue of being the #2 seed in the B1G tourney, they got a bye to the semis. Alas, they could not get past NW, despite having defeated them during the regular season.

They are still a near certainty for the NCAA tournament. At this point, they were just battling for seeding in the tourney. This loss will not help in that department.

So the NCAA bids went out this evening, and PSU made the dance for the 5th straight year.

The NCAA WLAX Tournament is a 24-team competition, with only top 8 teams seeded. Seeds 1 thru 6 get byes. Seeds 7 & 8 play in the first round, with the 16 other teams in the tournament.

PSU will face Winthrop in Round 1, on Friday. Should PSU win that match, they will advance to a Round 2 matchup with #2 seed Florida, at Florida. That will be a tough matchup. Florida is 18-1 on the year, though they've had a few close calls. I think (going from memory), that they defeated Temple by 1 goal in a tough match.

You can find the Tournament bracket at THIS LINK.

Tom, were you at the game on Friday? NW had their backs against the wall all weekend long. They were on the verge of not making the tourney for the first time years plus they were playing at home. Lot's of extra motivation.

Unfortunately, I had too many other things on my schedule. Not only was I not at the game, but I was traveling when it was played, so I didn't get to watch it Fri. night on BTN.

I have not yet communicated with anyone that was at the game. I wanted to give them some time to get over the frustration.

Despite NW having a sub-par season by their standards, I think they were getting a dance invitation whether or not they defeated PSU. I forget what the odds listed were, but LAX Power had them them as likely to get selected.

PSU seemed to have trouble scoring on Friday, and even more trouble defending. Emi was removed from goal in the 2nd half, though I'm not sure if she was having trouble or if the D was losing their players. Her replacement did come in and made some early stops which seemed to give PSU a pick-up.

In the 2nd half, more than halfway in, NW had 2 separate girls that received yellows. Alas, PSU missed on their free position after the 2nd yellow, NW got possession and called TO, and then NW maintained possession to kill the 2-man down situation.

I was pretty busy, and also had some traveling, on Sunday, so I missed the B1G final as well. 3 crease violations missed by the refs? That's a lot at that level.

As for NCAAs, unless you are a 1 thru 4 seed, it's a bear of a tournament. With only 24 teams making the dance, there aren't a lot of easy games. Hopkins - UVA in R1, with the winner taking on MD in R2, is a nasty draw. UMass has had a great season, but against so-so competition. It will be interesting to see how they do against Cornell in R2, assuming they both advance past R1. PSU has a tough road in that they're likely to face Florida in R2. If they can get past them, they actually have a good shot of making the Final Four, which is being held in the Philadelphia suburbs this year. The last few years they've lost in the Quarters. I know the team/coaching staff really wants to break past that barrier.

Ned, I spoke with someone that was at the match, and really knows the sport. They indicated that NW face guarded PSU's feeder, and that PSU never adequately adjusted to this. In addition, they stated that Emi didn't have a great game (hence, the reason she was replaced in goal at some point in the 2nd half). Their last comment was that PSU, who is usually very careful with the ball, had a slew of turnovers in the 1st half (believe it was 11; not certain), which is part of how they fell behind, early on, and never could tie or take the lead.

Just a quick update:

PSU defeated Winthrop, 16-6, in R1 of the NCAAs.

On Sunday at 1 pm, they'll take on #2 seed Florida, at Florida.

Since I did put down UMass a bit earlier in this thread (mentioned they had a great season, but against so-so competition), I should mention that they defeated Princeton, 13-12 (OT) in R1.

Alas, I missed R1 of the NCAAs, and will also miss the R2 game against Florida.

Beat the Gators!

Tom, do you know if this is going to be available on ESPN3 or anywhere else? I can't find it listed. Its a good matchup.

Ned, no TV coverage. However, I believe it will be streamed. I'm traveling, so I can't link things for you. GoPSUsports.com should have the link. From memory, I think it's on floridagators.com, but I can't check that at this time.

wow 13-13 overtime. Uf almost won with 6 secs left, Ball was hanging on the goaline.

what an awesome result for PSU!

now they get to host the U. of Pennsylvania on Saturday (May 21) in a quarterfinal game. The two teams will be fighting to go to the final four, which will be held in the suburbs of Philadelphia.

this PSU squad has shown signs of brilliance during the season, and signs of shocking normalcy. I felt they could beat Florida, but did not know if they would bring their A game to the match. I'm so happy that they got the win today.

A lot of interesting results in today's NCAA matches. In the top half of the bracket, #1 seed Maryland bested John Hopkins, 14-8. Hopkins has improved since PSU defeated them early in the season. UMass continued to surprise me, as they defeated #8 seed Cornell (who defeated PSU earlier this year), 7-6. Maryland has to be the favorite in this match on Saturday.

In the other part of the top of the bracket, #5 seed USC defeated Stanford (who defeated PSU earlier this season), 14-8. In addition, #4 seed Syracuse had a narrow victory over Stony Brook, 7-6. I haven't seen USC play this year, so it's hard for me to make a prediction on the USC - Syracuse quarterfinal on Saturday.

In the bottom of the bracket, #3 seed UNC defeated Duke, 15-10. They'll face #6 seed Notre Dame, who defeated Northwestern, 15-3. This should be a great quarterfinal matchup.

Lastly, #7 seed Penn defeated Towson, 12-4. Penn defeated Northwestern during the season, while PSU split with Northwestern. PSU should be favored, but Penn will be a tough opponent.

Looks like a goal to me, I ref high school and some college. Ball needs to be completely across the goal line for it to be a goal. That grainy picture doesn't really help. Lead ref hopefully was right up on it and not out by the 8 meter.

The refs were: Trina Balch, Laura Paro, and Eileen Jones. Trina has been involved in LAX most of her life, often speaks at the US Lacrosse Convention, and has been involved in training LAX refs. I don't know as much about Paro, but she's been reffing NCAA LAX tournaments for over a decade, so she's got to be very good. Jones is US Lacrosse's Chair for the state of New York, and has been reffing college women's LAX for some time. In short, a really experienced crew reffed today's match with Florida.

Just a reminder that PSU WLAX is hosting a NCAA quarterfinal match against the University of Pennsylvania, at noon on Saturday.

There is no TV for the event. I believe it is being streamed on BTN2GO.

The winner of this match goes to the NCAA WLAX Final Four, which is being staged next weekend in the Philadelphia suburbs. The quarters have been an Achilles heel for PSU in recent years. Here's hoping that this year's team can advance.

And once again, I have a scheduling conflict, so I can't provide updates during the match. Blasted family reunion, set up months ago.

Penn's defense has been very impressive of late, so this could be tight match. They defeated Northwestern during the regular season, while PSU defeated NW during the regular season, but lost to them in the B1G tournament semis.

Go PSU lady LAXers!

Been waiting for updates all day @Tom McAndrew. How was the potato salad? Which family members are getting divorced for the third and final time? Any good drinking stories? Just because you had a lax scheduling conflict, it doesn't give you the day off, sir. We even had to bring in the big gun, @JonZ to cover the lax today in your absence. I'll have another drink while we await your family reunion recap.

LOL. It was a reunion of a branch of my wife's family. As such, I think the best policy for me to follow is to not say a thing about them/the reunion. ;)

Final Four-bound!
