Even if that's feasible -- and we don't know if he certified there -- it's fraught with problems:
1. This is his 2nd year at 141. Why should we think he can just drop back down to 133 with no problems? He didn't just go to The Creamery one offseason and add 8 lb there. The additional weight is lean mass. Plus Cortez is coming off injury and would be undersized at 141. So we're likely weakening 2 weights.
2. If Jimmy doesn't get to 133 by 2/15, he's stuck at 141. That means he must start dropping NOW. (OK, theoretically he could wait until next week, but then he would have under 4 ounces of wiggle room.) That uncertainty puts Cortez in limbo -- he can't commit to 141 until he's certain Gulibon can make 133. If Gulibon and Cortez both miss 133, then Carpenter is your B10 Tournament starter at 133.
3. If they pull it off, then they will lose auto-qualifying spots for the conference at their weights. And they will not get at-large bids due to lack of matches at their new weights. They MUST earn their way to nationals. If they don't place high enough at B10s, they're out.
(Lack of matches: per NCAA weight loss restrictions, the earliest Gulibon could possibly wrestle at 133 is 2/10 vs. Illinois -- meaning he would have max 3 matches at that weight prior to B10s. His opponents would be Richards, Rappo, and possibly Brock -- meaning his official record would be 1-2 heading into B10s. Cortez could theoretically have 8 matches at 141 prior to B10s -- if he's healthy, Cael thinks there's no risk at starting him now off injury vs. bigger guys, and if Cael is OK with deliberately starting Carpenter until Gulibon makes 133.)
4. And if they do qualify, they'll be unseeded with random first-round draws, again due to lack of matches. We could see Round 1 matchups like Gulibon vs. Tomasello, Cortez vs. McKenna, etc.
Huge risk for little reward.
