New to this hoard. Wrestling was very big at Warren PA in the 1950s and 1960s. My cousins wrestled and the gym was full. I was stunned to notice that Nevills has zero muscle definition. I realize that he may have been injured. He is not in wrestling shape. He showed little dexterity and control of his body. He needs extensive strength conditioning and nutrition guidance to gain strength and dexterity. He will be good but he will never be a champion until his will to win prods him to get in wrestling shape. I hope that just being good enough is not his future at State.

Did you email this to Cael? Someone should let him know your thoughts.

Good grief Mary! Have you ever looked at Gable Stevenson? Tony Cassiopi? His brothers Nick and Seth Nevills? Not everyone can have the Cassar body type. For one he's a true freshman thrown into the hardest weight for freshman to compete in and he was not to be the starter this year until Cassar got hurt. He has a decent chance to AA as a true freshman. Too lazy to look it up but I'm gonna guess heavyweight is the hardest weight for true freshman to AA by a long shot..

Can't wait for the football crazies to get back to the football board.

Welcome to the board.

I agree that he needs to improve S&C, but it's not dire as the post sounds. This is the HWT division. Nevills is physically in line with the competition at the weight. Cassar and Snyder are extreme counter-examples.

For instance, the other guy in this pic is visibly less defined than Seth, has a gut, is known to gas, is known to wrestle with less than full focus and intensity ... He's also a sophomore ranked #1 in the nation for the 2nd year in a row, almost guaranteed national finalist, and his only career losses are to Cassar. Also he's a 2x cadet world champ, JR world team member, and this offseason wrecked Adam Coon twice.

If Nevills holds off Kerkvliet (not a given), he is good enough to be a 3x or maybe even 4x AA -- which maybe isn't good enough for some fans but is still an outstanding career.

Maybe it’s just me , but for a 260 lb freshman being thrown in, I think Nevills is pretty well put together. So Seth loses a close match late following an injury vs a kid That ain’t bad and we have all these threads about it following a huge win at home in front of a sellout basketball arena? Is this a joke?

Mary - are you and Lemon pie checking out our wresters and dreaming about them?

One of the strongest high school athletes I ever knew for his size (PIAA champion, multi time state place winner, insane bench press for a teen) did not look like Ronnie Coleman. There are different body types and some people are deceiving.

And its not just the HWT division, some noodly-armed 184 pound PSU punk wrestling at 197 just had one the best college careers of all time. Muscle definition is WAYYYY down the list of qualities that a wrestler needs to be sucessful, and can actually be a hinderance.
True. By that metric Ohio State should have 4-5 team titles.

He lost a match he should have won. It happens, especially with freshmen riders against 5th year seniors. Seth is a stud, and a threat to all but maybe 3-4 guys in the entire country.

Yea, that was interesting what Bo was saying about Shaq - that he was very strong
He’d have to be to cross-face his way to a Scuffle title. He was an undersized 197lber then, too (maybe not as much as this year, but still).

# 1 and # 3 are both doughy HWTs.. and both are fantastic wrestlers.. Muscle definition, especially at the HWT level is not a factor for most guys.. Seth appears put together quite well for a freshman but he doesn't seem to have the fast twitch reflexes that Cass/Paris/Steveson have..

This is like the scene in Moneyball (the book) in which the Oakland A's are strategizing about drafting a catcher.

The scouts were fixated on physical specimens regardless of production. The GM named guys who hit well. The scouts could not defend their choices except (in the GM's words) they "look good in jeans."

IBilly Beane was much smarter than his scouts.

Anyone with doubts should ask Jake Varner what he thinks about Seth's strength level.

I want to post a snarky reply, but I just can’t. I can’t. I can’t believe Seth is getting trolled by someone who looks like my mom. SMH

Mom, is that you ?
Remember what you told me growing up:

“If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.”

His brother never muscled up like Cessar did and had acmediocre career. He just seems to be slow and plodding, unlike someone with dexterity. I stand by my opinion. He he mimics his brother, he will never be in wrestling shape. Several others in the league will pay the price and beat him.

2x AA = mediocre?!?!
you don’t get to wrestle Saturdays at NCAA’s if you aren’t in wrestling shape. sheesh.

Edit
Look, it's not like you don't have a point. I assume Seth's goals include standing on top of the podium. Strength is one of the things he's going to need to work on to get there at this point. I'm just pushing back on the unrealistic expectations for us to field 10 Bo/Jason/Zain/Ed/David types every year. Achieving all American Status is a tremendous achievement, and those have propelled us to team championships before. Let's remember how many programs in the country would kill to have Seth Nevills on their team. I bet Tan Tom is one of them (snigger).

If your goal is to drum up sympathy for Nevills, you are succeeding.

If you want to name the list of guys not named Cassar and Snyder who muscled up, we'll wait. It won't take long.

Bo Jordan approves Mary's message :)

Perhaps Mary should be rooting for Dead Lift U (aka tOSU)

Come on guys. Let's just be nice. My guess is whomever the poster behind the tag "Marylovesthelions" is he/she just can't help the way they come across. Stupid asswipes gotta be stupid asswipes. It is who they are and what they do.

Not being nasty, disrespectful or anything like that. Just saying.

Well that is your opinion and you are entitled to it, Cael, who seems to know a bit about wrestling and coaching, has said he was very athletic, so.... I guess I will go with his opinion.

Probably the strongest person I ever saw and knew was our golf course superintendent, never lifted a weight in his life, had no muscle mass
but could throw around railroad ties like toothpicks.

You don't have to buffed to be strong.
