Rankings....WE ARE #2

I like it. Most guys on the team probably don't care, but it won't be a negative and can only motivate some. I thought last year was great to hear all the prognosticators imo ignoring the evidence (probably to keep things interesting) and expecting worst case (for us) which was the only way others could win. Only makes it more satisfying when we win and win big.

What is most interesting is that Nato is out, both Jordan's lose, team doesn't look that great, yet this is the week they move OSU ahead. You knew it was going to happen (in some ranking, probably others in the future), but the timing is pretty funny.

Guess I just like the underdog role better. There really are so many variables over a season (especially injury) that nothing is a lock, so for the wrestlers, any motivation they can find to help stay focused can't hurt.

It also gives us something to talk about....;)

I suspect much of the rankings will have us lower as a team just based on the Raptor loss. Cutch was at #4 and Raptor will probably enter in the teens and this will lower our team points.

I think it's likely because Cutch is ranked and Cassar isn't, so recalculation around a new lineup minus a #4 guy at 197 amounts to a team demotion, and that outweighs whatever the Jordan brothers losing dropped each of them.

Edit to note that Cassar is ranked, but #18. Point still applies because Cutch was ranked much higher.

I dont know whether to be funny, mad or numb to this.

Numb to it by now. Last year ranked 6th or 7th preseason. This year after starting 2-0 we move down a spot.

Bottom line as long as these wrestling “experts” will continue to use the “formula” of ranking teams based on “placement” points rather than take into account bonus, we will always fall short because these experts never give us credit for our non all Americans.

In addition to the points made re:197, Track (like InterMat) continues to refuse to include a PSU guy in the rankings for 141.

Yet, an injured NaTo who is not wrestling gets a #1 nod at 125.

EDIT: And BTW, InterMat still has PSU #1, as they still have Cutch listed #4 @ 197. Some work needs to be done.

I like the always worst case scenario thought process.

My point was did anyone NOT expect us to be moved down at some point? Figured it was going to happen, just a matter of when, but regardless of Cutch, it takes a big leap to think OSU overtook us after that match. I watched it. This was still funny to me, say what you will about numbers.

Love it. I'm pretty sure there has yet to be a NC year where we weren't ranked #2 or lower at some point. Which seems pretty absurd on the face of it considering how easily we won in some of those years, but really just shows how good a staff we have. Despite all the claims that the deck is stacked and anyone could do the same here - every year, at least one and generally everybody, has thought there was at least one and sometimes more teams with as much talent in the lineup as PSU - yet we were crowned when it counts every time.

With OSU's current rankings, there isn't much room to move up.
Snyder, Nato and Moore are #1
ZV looks like he has separated himself from BoJo. His chance of moving down might be greater than up ... same goes for Martin at #2
Micah at 157 will have a hard time finishing higher than his current ranking IMO.
That leaves Pletcher, Hayes, McKenna and Campbell. They could move up some, but their current ranking looks fair to me.

Of course we have several guys ranked at their max too. At the end of the day though, we're gonna have a ranked guy at 141 and a top-10 wrestler at 197. Whether that will be Cortez/Cassar or Lee/Cutch is yet to be determined.
I put Keener in the same category Pletcher and others ... could move up, but 12-15 seems fair. 125 is what it is.

tOSU's downside is massive. Only if everything goes perfectly for them do they compete with us this season.
125 - Nato is coming off an injury, no matter how severe or mild. I think Suriano beats him anyway and
then throw in that it's looking likely that S Lee goes for Iowa. Instead of a penciled in #1, it's #3.
141 - McKenna has ALWAYS underperformed compared to expectations at tourney time. Now he is in
maybe the deepest division out there. Add in some phenomenal freshman like Yianni, Red,
Storr and even Nick Lee and now McKenna's floor just dropped a ton.
149 - Hayes? Unimpressed with him over the weekend, to say the least. Of course it is ridiculously
early, but has he ever proved it on the mat?
157 - Micah got ridden like a trike at daycare. Up a weight this year, don't expect that glaring fault to
improve.
165 - Campbell - Kind of like this kid...just has yet to prove it on the big stage.
174 - BoJo - Zahid annihilated him. Mark will separate from him this year as well. Basically he has
fallen to a tossup with Amine for 4th place. Don't sleep on Lewis beating him either.
184 - Myles - Kid is streaky. Having him locked in at #2 is very much a best case scenario.

So...these sites that rank them above us only do it because there is very little accountability later on. It's no skin off their face when we beat them soundly in March.

The only thing that worries me is Ohio State could possibly get Delaney to pressure the NCAA to just anoint the Buckeyes division 1 champions prior to the tournament.

I'd be remiss if I didn't point out that TOM's team rankings not only take into account bonus points, they also take into account match history against wrestlers in several tiers to calculate how likely a wrestler is to advance at the NCAA tournament and how likely they are to score bonus points in each match. It takes longer as I have WrestleStat pull a special report for me each week, but our team rankings take into account more information than anyone else. I don't think it is a coincidence that they were surprisingly accurate at predicting the team scores last season at NCAAs.

Sorry for the plug, but I believe in what we're doing.

Cael had an interesting take in an interview I heard. He doesn’t buy into the underdog status because it is based on expectations. His thought was if we are number two then expectation of others is for a number two result. He would rather be expected to win.

But, it will be settled in March.

What have you seen wrt S Lee?

I don't think that it's outrageous for any wrestling site to have Ohio state #1. Let's be honest, they're stacked. Now last year was different. I had no doubt that PSU was far better than Okie state the entire season. But the bucknuts are more than solid at every weight, assuming Tomasello is healthy in March. But in the end, rankings are only a number. While duals are important to the sport, we all know that they are simply a prelude to 3 days in March, when Cael's young men always seem to rise to the occasion. It's gonna be great.

Apologies for being trite, but as in life, it doesn't matter where you start but where you end.

This is just a mathematical glitch where Cutch's NCAA point value at #4 was replaced by Cassar NCAA point value at #18.

Just to show how illogical the model is, it ranks per placing & advancement points, but ignores any bonus point potential.

Also, this model continues to rank NaTo at #1 despite his injury.
