i am fortunate that we ring in the new year with my wife's sister / brother-in-law and their two daughters... Like most who spend the night at home - one of the downfalls of the evening is, as midnight approaches, we put "Dick Clark's Rockin' New Years Eve" on the boob-tube ...

As I continue to morph into the "Cranky Old Man" and act on my disdain toward millennials - i can't help but ask myself what makes me angrier:

A) "Artists" that agree to appear on a show and lip-sync / perform-to-track as opposed to actually performing live
B) crowds that blissfully accept a half-assed lip-sync and otherwise feign that the performace is exciting (or worse, are ignorant to the fact that the "artist" is scamming them in the first place)...
My take is that a crowd should summarily turn on any performer who attempts to pass off a phony performance as a genuine live performance...

Yeah teah, i know - rock/pop acts have been doing this crap for decades (no greater offender than Dick Clark Productions/American Bandstand) ... But cripes this makes me angry...

Every once in awhile though you get someone with talent rivaled only By the size of their balls and simply knock one out of the park - last night it was John Legend... Clearly he was doing it live and it was freakin' great... Meanwhile you have a piece of self-important crap like Mariah Carey who simply bagged it ... Though i probably should like her for not even trying and exposing the farce for what it was...

Completely missed the lip sync. My eyes were closed wishing away the jump suit she was wearing.

The all time greatest lip sync performance on American Bandstand was by John Cougar Mellencamp, in 1982. Do yourself a favor and check it out, it is beyond hysterical. Awesome, just awesome, tongue in cheek performance by the whole band.

Mariah whored herself to make it, that is a fact. Tommy Mottola's bought and paid for prostitute, in return for sex, Mottola made her a star.

Who was that godawful band at halftime during the Orange bowl?
The guitar player in particular was a joke.

She was a star before him. It didn't hurt her career for sure but it wasn't her start either. Emotions was a huge record and came out before they got married.

Sometimes you see a band live, and they let you down.

STEELY DAN comes immediately to mind...Saw them a couple of years ago and have never been as completely and totally disappointed in a concert, in my entire life...

Becker was basically not even plugged in, Fagen can't sing for shit, the band played every song in a different key than recorded, and at half speed. Just freaking horrible.

Bullshit. She was his girlfriend BEFORE ever being signed. Mottola found her, hired her, and made her. Lock stock and barrel

Now THAT was impressive! Did you lip sync the whole thing!

What is there to perform? None of them can play any instrument. Their voices are creations of digital manipulations.

The true greats are the ones who can just sit down and entertain at the drop of the hat. Billy Joel and GC come to mind for me.

I'll post this video again because I just saw it for the first time last night and can't stop watching it. A real singer. And musicians!

The Beach Boys are a prime example of a band that really needs to lip sync.

That ship sailed A LONG TIME AGO....Basically none of them can do it anymore...that quack Landy destroyed Brian's life long ago, beyond sad.

They couldn't sing BEFORE their ship sailed. There is a "great" video of them trying to perform their songs -- I think it was a New Years Day in Philly from 30 years ago -- just painful.

Brian and Dennis, when they were young, could sing...but yes, after the drugs when the 70's started, it was over. Mike Love has always been awful, but Al Jardine could play and Bruce Johnston was excellent when he was young.

They wrote brilliant songs, but other than that they were a longer lasting Monkees.

I agree with your POINT, but I gotta say amigo, that whole "Monkees did not play their instruments" thing, is GREATLY exaggerated...I will tell you first hand my friend that NOBODY played their own instruments in the studio...nearly every band had hired studio hands play their records...from The Who(not the Ox of course, but even Pete had some ghost players occasionally), to Bon Jovi(NONE of the band played on the first two records), and on down the line. Hell, I don't think anybody in Kiss played on any of the albums after the makeup came off haha.

I agree - was actually sticking up for the Monkees.

Did you know that about Nesmith too? That apparently his family was super wealthy, like 1% wealthy, they invented liquid paper or something...Nesmith didn't have to work a day in his life, but somehow got the role with no acting experience. I think obviously Davy and Mickey had done some things prior to the show, not sure about Peter Tork...

Some of those songs are just awesome, Neil Diamond wrote a few of them.

I realize the Subject line didn't give a hint as to the subject being discussed, but there was a thread from NYE about Mariah's performance. You can view it at THIS LINK.

Carl had the beautiful voice.

He picked up all our tabs at the old ER Bradleys on Palm Beach one night and I got to watch his ex-wife dance on the bar 3 feet from me. He's good in my book.

That's the one. She is quite the woman.
The old Bradleys (there's a new one across the water in WPB) was a crowded little nook, cranny, corner, hallway bar w/ old dark wood. The bar itself was maybe 20' long. It was definitely a Kennedy haunt. Any hot woman would simply be egged into dancing on the bar. That one night Rachel was one of about a dozen that respected the tradition.

Are you telling me that on any given night there might be as many as a dozen women AS HOT AS RACHEL HUNTER, at that bar? Man oh man,...

Saw Steely Dan in October and they were absolutely mind blowing. Saw Brian Wilson in September and enjoyed it immensely. If you get a chance, don't miss these guys. True geniuses of American music. Their music will outlive us all.

This is all kind of funny when you remember the outrage from- was it the late 70s or early 80s- when it was revealed that ELO used a few pre-recorded tracks in their concerts to fill out the sound so it sounded more like their recordings. Now you have these twinkies who can't fart without using autotune.

I have to agree with 21 on this one... I saw SD during their run at the Beacon Theatre two years ago. You'd think that being NYC guys that they would play an inspired show...

Nope... 1 hour and 40 minutes (including the encore) of going thru the motions.... basically if the Deacon Blues was 5:34 on the record, it was performed 5:34 live. No ingenuity, no soloing, no improvisation ... I felt ripped off (and a $150 face ticket!)...

That wasn't Mariah Carey...it was a Disney animatronics version of her.
