Re: Retro uniforms. Why did Penn State wear white shoes in 1979 Sugar Bowl?

Look closely, those were white sneakers. Playing indoors, turf...turf shoes just not that common. Not sure who convinced Joe or why.

Any reason why?

If I recall, white shoes were semi-trendy at the time, and the players wanted to wear them for that game. JVP agreed to their request. It was really just the result of a simple request, and Joe not having much of an issue with it.
The trend faded away in the 80s for the most part.

you are wrong, Penn State did not play that many games on turf at the time, and they didn't have turf shoes. adidas contacted Penn State and said hey do you want free shoes. the answer was yes, and that is why they were worn

Well, they played at temple and at Ohio State that season... both on turf. They had a turf practice field. West va was turf then. They played a couple games every year on turf back then. They had shoes. I borrowed them from fraternity bros on the team to play im football.

Yea they did. And those shoes weren't great. The white shoes were free and came from Adidas. I'm sure you borrowed you boys shoes. But there was no request. My guy on this is pretty good. His office is above the locker room in the Letterman lounge. Short guy from Curwinsville. You prob know him

Well, I certainly take Spider's knowledge of this over my recollections of what I heard many years ago. That said, it seems odd that Joe would ok the white shoes on his own without player input or suggestion or request. That's a big change for a big game, out of character for JVP, even with free shoes on the table!
I know better than to second guess Spider on anything like this, though!
