Interesting to note, the shooter was in possession of a sound suppressor. That's a NFA item; meaning, if he owned it then he went through ATF vetting that's akin to giving up your first born, to include your local police chief signing off on it. That should tell you about the efficacy of any gun registry meant to mitigate mass shootings.
IMHO, the solution is a zero sum game. Either revoke the 2nd Amendment or leave things be. And given the abuses of power uncovered by Donald Trump the former is a dangerous proposition. Am I politicizing a tragedy. Hardly. Especially in light of the constant knee-jerk reactions by the anti-gun lobby every time there's a mass shooting. Now had I said "if only there was a licensed, armed civilian present" then it would be another matter.
