REALLY surprised the Buccos didn't call up an "arm" today

Unless they did bring a guy up....and it just wasn't reported yet????

After the back to back extra inning games.....and the bullpen paper thin right now, due to the recent workload....and Locke on the bump today:

I thought for sure the Club would bring an arm from Indy up today (maybe just take today's projected starter for the Tribe).
With Harrison and Mercer back soon, they are going to have to DFA a couple of position players within the next several days anyway.....woulda' thought they would have DFA'd one of the First Basemen (probably Ishi), since at least one of them is going to have to go to make room for the guys coming off the DL anyway.......and - in any case - they are unlikely to get claimed, and the Club could (if the player is OK with it) just bring them back in September.

What happens today if Locke is Locke.....and you need 4 innings of bullpen work? God forbid, they go more than 9 innings again.

Blanton has to be a NO GO, Melancon has to be a NO GO (in fact he already broke the "unwritten rule" by working THREE straight games)
Caminero has worked each of the least two....and Hughes has worked each of the last 2 - including a 2 inning outing on Friday.....so, according to Hurdle's rules they would be "emergency only"

Watson pitched two of the last 3, including multi-inning work on Friday, and is typically a 1 inning guy
Bastardo has worked 3 of the last 4, and is typically a 1 inning guy
Soria is the only guy without a real heavy workload.....and even he has pitched 2 of the last 3, but he - again is a 1 inning guy.

In the past, Hurdle/Huntingdon have typically erred on the side of caution, and often played with a short bench and 8 in the pen.

If they need 3 of more innings out of the pen (when was the last time they DIDN'T need 3 or more innings for a Locke start?)........could we see Sean Rodriguez on the bump?

Well, Worley just threw five last night, so he's out for now. I thought they would also. This lineup today almost gives you the feeling that they're conceding this game. Rest is needed I guess. If Jeff can keep them in the game, they'll have some fire power on the bench.

WOW....that was a very surprising win. Coupled with the losses by StL (big surprise), and Cubs (had to figure there was a good chance there with Sale pitching)......very good day all the way around for the Buccos.

Locke had one of his best outings (though I gotta say, after watching things this weekend, the Mets offense is barely AAA level - especially with Duda out.) Still, good outing for Locke.

The Buccos REALLY need to have a starter go 7 or 8.....pronto.

I think all three relief pitchers who worked today were throwing in the 3rd game in 4 days.....and THEY were the relatively rested guys.

Nice to see Worley with an effective AAA start this weekend. Should be fully up to speed in time to - I would think - drop into the rotation around the 25th of August, or whenever Happ is penciled in around that time.

They will DFA Florimon when Harrison is ready to come back, and they will wait until Sept 1 to add Mercer, since with the expanded rosters they won't have to cut anyone.

As for a pitcher, there isn't anyone, period. The only one available is Lis, and the last few starts he's come down to earth. I think they will just ride it out.

FWIW, Scahill has progressed back up to Indy in his rehab. I don't think I prefer him to any of the current bullpen arms.....but he does provide a bit more depth - if not now, at least on Sept 1.
And I would think, unless Happ tosses another surprising start next time out, that Worley will also make the jump up from Indy.

Also....I wonder if it might be Morse who gets DFA's when Harrison comes up.....or maybe Ishi.

With Morse's salary, there is no danger of anyone picking him up (kinda' like how they kept DFAing Tabata, knowing no one would take his $$$).....so Morse would stand a good chance of being available to add back to the roster on Sept 1. In the meantime, until Mercer is back it is nice to have one glove at SS that you know will give you "+" defense at the position.

Yeah, that is possible. Too bad they had so many pitchers go down with TJ surgery. They are really rather stuck.

I think they feel confident that Florimon would get thru waivers as well.

I didn't see that coming either. The Mets, though, did look like the Keystone Cops today. Bucs took advantage of it to their credit.

True that...for sure.

WRT Florimon I'm sure he would pass through as well......just a matter of whether Clint prefers - for the next week or two - to have a middle infield glove, or another first baseman/pinch hitter.
Not sure which would make the most sense.
