My friend is getting married this Sunday. Our plan lands close to game time in San Fran. We are staying in the outskirts of Oakland but was wondering on psu bars in the surrounding area. Hope they don't mind us carrying our luggage inside the bar :) Thank you!

There is a Buffalo Wild Wings right off of 280 in the Serramonte Center that is pretty close to SFO if you are crunched for time. I would never recommended that place, but it is close to SFO and you shouldn't have to worry about taking your luggage inside. Monaghan's in the Marina is a PSU bar, but it will take much longer to get there and your luggage might be an issue. There is no good way to get to the Marina from SFO. You would most likely miss a lot of the game.

From the San Francisco Chapter of the PSAA, you have lots of options:

San Francisco
  • Monaghan's at 3243 Pierce Street in the Marina is arguably the loudest of all the PSU venues.
East Bay
  • Ricky’s at 15028 Hesperian Boulevard in San Leandro is a haven for Penn Staters every football Saturday
  • Legends & Heroes Sports Bar in on Port Chicago Highway in Concord.
  • Rocco's Restaurant & Pizzeria on Ygnacio Boulevard in Walnut Creek.
  • McGee's Bar and Grill, 1645 Park Street, Alameda, CA (Big Ten bar!)
  • McGah's Pub and Pianos, 148 E Prospect Ave, Danville, CA (Big Ten bar!)
Peninsula
  • The Old Pro at 541 Ramona in Palo Alto.
Have fun!

I used to go to Ricky's quite a bit when I lived in San Ramon. Good PSU following and a decent place to watch the games. There was usually a number of other teams represented as well, so it was all good fun. This was about 10 years ago.

mhep: I would concur with Grass' recommendation that you head over to that Buffalo Wild Wings in the Serramonte Center if your are pressed for time. If you need to get over to the East Bay and want to watch the game over there, I would go to Ricky's. It is THE sports bar in the Bay Area, and I think you could get to it faster than you could get to Monaghans in the Marina. You would just head south from SFO on #101, go over the San Mateo Bridge to the East Bay, and take #880 north a few miles to San Leandro. Probably a 30 minute drive if traffic is light to moderate.

I try to avoid the East Bay at all costs, plus mileage wise Monaghans is closer than Ricky's.

And google maps agrees: 34 minutes to Monaghans in traffic right now and 45 minutes to Ricky's.

The City has its advantages, and its disadvantages. I'll leave it at that.

Monaghans may be closer in terms of miles, but it would definitely take longer to get there. He would have to cross the City to do so, and it is all city streets.

Edit: I gotta admit, thought, that Monaghans is in a much nicer neighborhood. Particularly if you want to do some clubbing after the game.

Go to Rickeys in San Leandro - East Bay easy to get to - great PSU crowd. Went there when lived in SFran area.

It's also a huge Raider bar. Great pics and memorabilia .

At the time of posting Monaghans was less driving time and still is. 880 is a nightmare 24/7.

The East Bay always ruins my great weekends out at Yosemite and other eastern areas with their traffic coming back lol

Hey, L_Bear, I'm in SF now until Nov 2nd. Luckily I have some viewing options with the fam here, but thanks for the backups in case we have a huge family brawl at dinner tonight.

God, it has been hot as hell since we got here. 85 in SF (particularly the Sunset) is like 100 Back East. I hope it falls into the low 60s soon like they forecasted.

Cannot recommend - at least from being the superstitious sort.

I watched the 2015 Penn State @ Ohio State game there. There were lots of Buckeye fans (and 2 of us PSU fans). And that game didn't go well either.

But, yes, it was close to SFO and helped me get back in time for my 10:30 PM red-eye.

Hey, Mike. Good to hear from you. Yeah, 85 is crazy hot for the Sunset District.

"Huge family brawl?" You have some hard core liberals in your extended family? LOL. If they boot you out on Saturday, you are welcome to sojourn over here to Lafayette and watch the game with me. The wife is back in Philly this week, so it is just me and the youngest son.

The Blue Oyster.

? I consulted Google and could not find a Blue Oyster Restaurant or Blue Oyster Bar in the Bay Area. But I came across this:

What is a "blue oyster" and how does it relate to homosexuality??
I often see people use the phrase Blue Oyster Bar as a generic name for a gay/lesbian bar, I think this came from the Police Academy movie series where in film there is a gay bar named that(or it was an existing term before the movies).

Was THAT what you meant? (Not that there is anything wrong with that.)

Bear, maybe you can help me out with something. My family is renting a nice house here in the Inner Sunset for the visit. The only drawback to the place is that the owner just has basic cable (Comcast) with nothing but the local stations.

The game of Saturday is on "FOX". I'm assuming that's not Fox Sports or some other Fox cable station. So, I'm hoping to get the game on Channel 2......one of the few stations available to me. The backup is taking a lot of booze over to one of the in-laws' places, commandeering their TV and hoping they'll shut up enough for me to concentrate on the game.

Am I right? Will the game be shown on Channel 2?

Why, I know nothing about anything like that.

Thank you for recommending Rickys! It was a great place for food and football! Too bad the bar was flooded with tOSU fans! my crew of 10 were the only psu fans there. Great bar tho! Thanks again!
