better to fill the class earlier (maybe overfill) than "sweat" the last day decision makers. I just do not understand why (I guess attention) these kids wait for the last day. I do understand kids flip, but it seems to me unless the kid is a bonafide 5 star it would be best to fill the class earlier. I look at the Nixon kid, why wait for him ? I kind of get Ferns, but that is it. If we were in the Gary race I would get it as well.

The LOI day "made for tv" announcements are what irritate me the most. The schools left out of the magic hat "ceremony" are left with unused scholarships that some deserving player could have used. That's one less high school senior getting a scholarship.

Until those schools involved with those narcissistic young men refuse to play that game, this ESPN U charade will continue to annoy me and have me despise modern day recruiting even more.

I somewhat agree. I don't know why it takes so long to make up your mind. Its a big decision, but I'd want to get it over with.

As a fan I'm impatient and greedy...I want my school to land kids early so we can create momentum and get more and more with the early verbals putting on their recruiting hats.

But then I look at it as a (step) parent and think kids shouldn't buy into the glitz of all of it, gather as much information as possible, have some time to step away from it all to gather their thoughts and only commit when they have seen everything they need. If I was the parent of a recruit I would encourage the kid to take at least one of their visits (to each school he is seriously interested in) to take the regular tour that all applicants take. I would then encourage them to wait to take OVs so they can get the full student-athlete presentation and see if they fit in with the other players. If at that point he doesn't have a clear far and away leader I'd be more than happy to pay for him to go back on an unofficial during the week (to a couple of his favorites) so he could shadow a player and see what a real day in the life is like. To me...even if FB comes first (in the mind of the kid) it is a life decision...even if the kid ends up in the NFL I would want to make sure he is happy and grows as a person during his 4/5 years in college...and while FB is part of it, it is not all of it.

If I were a five-star prospect, I'd be signing my LOI around March 1, maybe even later.

I really think the problem is schools announcing verbal commitments. I realize recruiting has created an entire industry of its own. If we just didn't announce anything until after LOI day? I think things would be much easier on recruits as well as fans.

Schools don't announce verbals. The kid tells the industry.
Having a second earlier signing day as in basketball would help but it will not change things much.
