Back in the summer when I posted about my frustration/disappointment with the elite talent in our 300 mile region picking other schools, days like today were part of my point. To get to that next level you have to be Top 10 recruiting every year with multiple Top 5 every 5 years or so. Yes we have had multiple great classes but the fact is most 4 and 5 star kids never have any or much of an impact on the field. I look at elite recruits as lottery tickets, the more you inherit the higher your odds go up on hitting. You have 2 maybe 1 hits maybe neither. You have 5 maybe 2 hit, you have 8 maybe 2 or 3 hit, and on and on. Of course you get your 3 star kids who become multi year starters and that’s great. But to get to and stay at the elite level you have to keep collecting elite talent. Shorter and Slade were 5 star kids yet lower ranked kids have done more on the field and those two will probably both be gone. That doesn’t even take into account injuries like Nana and Miner. Personally I’m not happy with today’s news but from what I’ve seen of Shorter he simply is not a difference maker. You have 3 years with difference makers like Saquan, Micah, Hamler. With such a short window and less than 50% of hitting on them you have to keep collecting them.
