While we all wait for the next installment of @RoarLions1 must read B1G seed predictions, I thought I would sprinkle in a little stats to make you smile.

Individual Leaders

Using the Wrestlestat top 33 wrestlers at each weight I have the highest bonus point individuals (minimum 75%):

Seems kind of suspicious that the world's most renowned staller sit third on this season's list. At the request of a poster on Intermat I also too a look at where Starocci sits if we just consider top 50 or top 33 competition. Yep, still third.

With so many PSU wrestlers on that list, surely they look ok at the team level, too. Well, I have more good news for you.

Team Leaders

That title is not exactly accurate as I am only including the average of every team's top 33 wrestlestat ranked wrestlers (minimum 5 ranked wrestlers).

Consequently, and for context, I include the number of ranked wrestlers.

You might notice that is a pretty healthy gap between 1 and 2 (12.8%).
  • The gap between PSU and Little Rock is as wide as the gap between #2 Little Rock and #15 Penn.
  • The gap between PSU and Ohio State (the next highest school with 10 wrestlers) is wider than the gap between Ohio State and the lowest team with 10 wrestlers (Minnesota).
  • Somehow PSU left 50 matches on the table. Call it room for improvement.

The Penn State wrestling team, version 2024-25, has a chance to be the best ever… for B1Gs they’ll probably have 5 #1 seeds, 3 #2 seeds, and 2 #3 seeds. Let that sink in. All 10 have a legitimate shot at the finals. Not sure what the team point record is but they will threaten it. Same for nationals. Flo has them at 162 pts without bonus based on rankings at the end of the regular season. Sit back and enjoy the next month. Epic year!

Also take a look at who Carter will likely be facing for his 5th NCAA Title - the defending 184 lb Champion, likely 3X Finalist & 5X AA (hasn't finished worse than 3rd - 3rd, 3rd, 2nd, 1st his first 4 seasons) and 5th on your list.

Also the only match Carter didn't bonus is against a wrestler that would likely be ranked #3 @184 if Iowa pulls their redshirt and sends them at B1Gs.

Aside from the PSU ranks, two things from a general NCAA wrestling landscape perspective really stood out to me:

(1) Only 4 guys (17.4%) in the first table appear to have wrestled 20 or more matches during the regular season, while none reached the 25-match mark.

(2) Weight classes 174-285 represent 69.6% of guys in the first table overall and 12 of the top 13 (92.3%)! The 197 class (6 guys — or 26.1%) has the strongest representation among all weights.

Regarding (1) above, it stands to reason that the fewer matches you wrestle, the greater the odds might be that you face fewer of the toughest opponents who might lower your bonus %. It might also stand to reason that the fewer matches you wrestle, the better your body holds up over the season and allows you to perform in top condition. That all said, these numbers are a stark reminder of how the sport has been moving toward fewer matches. I imagine that is due partly to financial considerations, partly to philosophy/strategy.

Regarding (2) above, I cannot help but think of how pleased I have been over the past 5+ years to be able to look forward to matches at 197 and 285. I remember older days when those weights were often just painfully boring to watch. Not recently, and certainly not this year.
