Renteria to Illegal Backfister U.

Where do he and Chad Red project weight wise? Thought they were both same class in high school. They will be tough in the lower weights.

Should make for some spicy match ups against the Hawkeyes

And this is what he wants...He has the potential to make Iowa eat it too. Tall order considering who we have coming in at 133-149 but have to say that this one stings the most of our decommits. Really liked this kid and his love for the Hawks.

this year I look forward to reading the wish we still had burak threads. In the years to come it will be the renteria and mejias threads.

A few of you are pushing the Burak thing...that ship has sailed. During our annual post NCAA board blowup, maybe you'll get your wish from a few football fans dropping by but most of us have accepted it and moved on. To be honest, if Alex Marinelli isn't ready to go this year, than that point is moot anyways. I wish Burak would have shirted for individual reasons as the weight clears out a bit but Tom doesn't think like that. As for both of those guys, I've been a JRent guy for awhile and wish him nothing but success. Really wished he would have come but it goes to show the complexities of early verbals vs reality when it comes to talking money. Lee and Teasdale changed the landscape plus we have Jack Wagner who has wrestled Renteria close on multiple occasions...and Happel and Murin in the 141 range. I will be rooting for JRent his whole career...except against us. He will do just fine at Nebby with their staff.

Red has said he will probably wrestle at 141 or 149

good point. I often wonder because every time there is a coaching opening, perry is a message board hero, yet their recruiting isnt all that.

things that make you go hmmmmm
What's weird about They Be Illin: they seem to recruit much better out of state than in. The nonresidents who came, and residents who went elsewhere ... both >> the residents who stayed.

I mean, he was able to get Delgado and Martinez, among others. But then Ramos, Brooks, Mahomes, Early, and a couple starting lineups' worth of good in-state wrestlers scattered. The best in-state commits were Cortez (who didn't stay), Richards, and Montalvo; beyond that, I just can't think of any offhand.

Regardless, it's a real head-scratcher.

Lavion Mayes, Thomas Gantt, Nate Jackson, and the Marsden brothers got away as well. Illinois is a really good wrestling state.

#8 overall Jacob Warner up next. Illinois is on his list along with 3 other teams; Iowa, tOSU & NC State. Originally had Minnesota on that list as well but they may have eliminated themselves for obvious reasons.

Pop is doing such a nice job at NC State. They seem to be in the running for a lot of top recruits. Iowa has a real need at that weight and probably have been after him hard. Wonder if Rosselli leaving tOSU has hurt their chances at all? They still have some guy by the name of Snyder associated with the program so probably not much.

Where have u seen MN eliminated? Last report I have seen had MN high on his list and yes this was after the scandal broke. Or are u just making an assumption?

I've never met Perry but from what I've seen, he doesn't strike me as being all that likeable. I would think most ADs would consider "likeability" to be an important trait when selecting a candidate to become the face of the program.

Perry should make a good head coach. Has had his dad coach him since birth, got good coaching at Blair and then had 5 years at Iowa. He knows his stuff and I believe he will be successful.

I was coaching at a local high school when Perry was at Cal Poly and he was a great PR guy for their program and very helpful to local coaches and programs! He was approachable, easy to talk to, and it seemed like his wrestlers really enjoyed wrestling for him! It was a HUGE loss for Poly when he moved on to Illinois!

If I remember correctly. In the 4th quarter Iowa went for a 4th and long from their side of the 50 knowing full well if they did not make it Penn State would give the ball back in 4 plays.
I don't recall that, but with our offense that year, it's certainly feasible. I do remember 2 other things in the 4th quarter of that game:
1. With about 8:30 left, Iowa took an intentional safety while up 6-2. Some wise guy sitting 2 rows behind us screamed to decline the safety.
2. Late in the game, Iowa went for it on 4th down instead of taking a chip-shot < 25-yd FG. They were more afraid of a miracle blocked kick 90-yd return, than a 2-minute drill leading to a PSU FG.

This is what I want to do every time I'm reminded of that game:

Often forgotten due to the overall offensive futility was future QB Michael Robinson dropping two catchable TD passes in that game. Brutal.
