Response to 'Franklin is a used car salesman' article...

What you write and think is colored by who you root for and your rivals. CJF is proving to be a dynamic and successful recruiter, so fans and writers of other threatened programs will try to say and write things to present his success in a negative light. Their readership wants to hear and believe that CJF's recruiting is only a house of straw that will blow away over time.
I am going to enjoy the ride and have high expectations that we will be a national force for years to come.

I think it would be rather difficult to gauge how "well liked" ANY coach is, considering the sheer volume of media people assigned to cover any major, Power-5 Conference head football coach.
Making a blanket statement about how any coach is "disliked" by the media, seems, at best, flimsy.

Look, there is no doubt that CJF is a salesman, and a damn good one at that. This should not be a knock on the guy, as selling is a big part of his job. Getting young impressionable kids to choose Penn State over other offers where "more than promises" are provided is no easy task! Are some of his tactics somewhat hokie? Maybe, but as long as he does things by the book and gets kids to play their hearts out for Penn State, he has done his job well!

Franklin has the correct attitude; get um; educate um; graduate um and finally win with um!

He is high energy, optimistic, and seems to have continued " success with honor" . Couple that with charisma/ good media persona , and most importantly: recruiting effectively . ---This makes him a target for negative press......that's what true "used car salesmen" do, they will artificially create doubt to undermine the competition. If Franklin wasn't effective, people wouldn't be fearful enough to create a negative distortion. --- he threatens the status quo, and some are terrified.

What is "used car salesman" about Franklin? Nothing. He is charismatic and is "selling" Penn State. Used car salesman implies he is trying to put one over on people. Franklin is not doing that. College coaches are supposed to "sell" their schools and programs. That is part of recruiting. This is what Franklin is doing. College coaches should not promise things that are either against the rules or that they cannot actually promise (e.g., starting role, NFL). There is no evidence that Franklin is doing either. So, no, Franklin is not a used car salesman.

People shouldn't confuse enthusiasm and charisma with deception. It may make certain other schools' athletic supporters feel better by trying to convince themselves that Franklin is a used car salesman, but of course, that doesn't make it true.

Who cares what a fan site says about your coach. The fact they even mention him means they are thinking about him which means he is certainly on their radar.

That quote was obviously by a jaded sports writer. I honestly believe Penn State has the worst local sports media in the country.

If JF is a car salesman it's at the Ferrari dealership and his clients already know what they're buying. He's just trying to keep them from heading across the street to Porsche or Jaguar. He's not trying to deceive anyone at a used car lot in the seedy part of town.

Well, when "recruiting" 16-17 year old kids and their "interested" families a "salesmen" is what it's ALLLL about. OSU uses the "stay eligible" for a few years and then off to the NFL, OB showed his NFL resume, Franklin sells the PSU "family" first and the NFL second (in some ways like Joe). At least that is my opinion :)
But, selling is the name of the game.

substitute Brian Kelley.....if you want a used car salesman. of all the CFB HC's he stands out at one of the worst. he focuses more on making late chases on committed players, has succeeded in brining academic doubt to ND who has been known for maintaining standards and has not produced much on the field of play in his time at ND.....other than one very lucky season that got exposed by Bama in the NC game. If I were a player, I would not trust him on even the simplest things.

If Franklin was a used car salesman, he would have told Adam McLean that he was going to be able to come to PSU this year, when it was obvious this kid was not likely to qualify. instead, Franklin tells McLean he needs to focus on preparing in JC or similar level first = the truth. BTW - Edsel is not far behind Kelley.

If anyone can recognize a used car salesman you would think it would be the Columbus press. Apparently NOT!

And guess what people say about Urban Meyer and Nick Saban? The same thing.

This is exactly right. "used car salesman" has the negative connotation of being less than honest about the product you're selling. We have no evidence that Franklin has been dishonest with recruits or the media. That's just wishful thinking by our rivals.

Whatever he is doing and whatever he is called, KEEP ON DOING IT! I have a very close friend who is very intelligent, honest, and probably the kindest man I know. He has been selling used cars for 20 years. I always hated that saying.

The comments that Pitt and especially Rutgers people make about Franklin being a "snake oil salesman" or "used car salesman" are especially funny when you step back and realize that aside from the fact that it is wishful thinking you can also look at it and say "hmm...what does the fact that a used car salesman that is so obvious to them can sell so easily here at PSU mean for their programs?".

Are Flood and Narduzzi selling flaming bags of shit?

Pitt fans latest mantra is, why go to Penn State and ride the bench behind all those big recruiting classes? Come to Pitt and play right away and be a star.

Translation: If you're afraid of competition, don't mind playing on a team filled with lesser talent and a few star players, and have no aspirations of competing for championships, well then Pitt is It!
