I know he had no direct connection to Penn State, but several PSU players played for him while he was head coach of the Jets (Greg Buttle quickly comes to mind) and if there was a Mt Rushmore of NEPA football, he and his brother would surely be on it. Being a lifelong Jets fan, one can only wonder where the Jets would have gone if they had not unceremoniously dumped him in 1983 after leading them to the AFC championship game.

Just last night I was wondering the same thing.:)

Thanks for posting. Walt is more relevant to this PSU board than many of the people who receive RIP posts here. May I ask that you add an RIP to the subject line so readers will know he passed away? Thanks.

Really great tributes to him in the article.

I believe his brother was (is?) Lou Michaels, who played for the Colts as a DT and Kicker.
Someone confirm or correct that, please.

He was the guest speaker at one of my football banquets in the Mid-Eighties. Very nice man. When I shook his hand it was as big as a scoop shovel.

you are correct, Lou played at Kentucky, Walt at Washington and Lee. I wonder if Walt is the last W & L player in the NFL? IDK
something I learned, the Washington and Lee Swing marching band fight song, I've heard this many times....I did not know it was from W & L...
