I've tried to avoid any buzz about the next Star Wars installment, but I presumed that she would be part of it. Guess I'll find out next December.

As we learned in Rogue One, CGI can keep her alive. That is, if her part wasn't filmed already.
Episode 8 started filming in Feb. 2016, and filming was wrapped up by July 2016. And as you indicated, CGI can augment things.
She wrote the screenplay for "Postcards from the Edge". It is loosely based on her life. She had an interesting life in the Hollywood "me first" culture. Mom (debbie reynolds) got dumped by her dad, Eddie Fisher, when he had an affair with Liz Taylor.
I have to believe that drugs took their toll on her, but may not have directly contributed.
A theory we have been pondering in the office is if she suffered from a clot during her flight which resulted in the heart attack. Now it wasn't a extremely long flight but these things are known to have happened.
She's had an "interesting" life. She's had a lot of drug problems and fought bi-polar disorder. It may have been a heart attack but she probably aged quicker due to the drugs and bipolar disorder.
Just a point of edification, Obli. Carrie wrote the novel first. She co-wrote the screenplay based on it.
I've watched her one woman show. She was smart, funny, very self-aware, honest and very endearing.

If I remember correctly, she wasn't originally supposed to be in Star Wars. Her and Sissy Spacek essentially switched roles because Carrie wasn't comfortable with the nudity in Carrie. Two of my favorite roles.
That's a rumor, but Fisher debunked it in an article titled "The Force Wasn't With Them," that appeared in Premiere Magazine. The article was about actors that auditioned for Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope. In the article Fisher said, "Not only do I love being nude, I would've been nude then... But anyway, it's total bullshit [that Fisher refused to play Carrie]."
Methinks you haven't been following along closely. Drugs were a big part of her life. George Michael as well. Hell, Nate Althouse just had a heart attack and he wasn't on coke. It can happen based on genes as well. But Fisher wrote about it in her book.

ironic. went to rogue 1 today. the last image before the credits was carrie as princess leia forshadowing the next sw film next dec. apparently, her shots were already in the can.
Um.....that image foeshadows Episode 4, not "the next sw film next dec." That film is Episode 8.
sorry. someone in our group said her shots for the next movie were already done. guess it was bad info.
