Stephen Furst -- actor and filmmaker known for playing Flounder in 'Animal House' -- has died due to complications from diabetes ... TMZ has learned.

Stephen's son Nathan tells us ... his father died at his home in Ventura Country, CA early Friday morning surrounded by loving friends and family. He and his brother Griff said about their dad ... "He was a beloved husband, father and kind friend whose memory will always be a blessing."

Furst battled with diabetes for years, and later became a spokesperson for the American Diabetes Association.

Very sad. Did a great acting job in a classic movie.

Furst played a funny guy very well.

Sad that he died from a largely avoidable disease. Kudos to Stephen for championing research into Type 2 Diabetes.

Hopefully research against decades of failed US Food Guidelines will continue to help individuals avoid deadly Diabetes, by more individuals not following the decades of deadly Federal guidelines that have been linked to promoting major diseases.

In addition, research is indicating that Alzheimer's Disease is being referred to as Type 3 Diabetes.

[From] Abstract

We conclude that the term “type 3 diabetes” accurately reflects the fact that AD represents a form of diabetes that selectively involves the brain and has molecular and biochemical features that overlap with both type 1 diabetes mellitus and T2DM.

[From] Introduction

Potential Roles of Obesity and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in Alzheimer's Disease Pathogenesis

Alzheimer's Disease is Type 3 Diabetes: Evidence from Human Studies

[From] Conclusion

Referring to AD [Alzheimer's Disease] as T3DM [Type 3 Diabetes Myelitis] is justified,

because the fundamental molecular and biochemical abnormalities overlap with T1DM and T2DM rather than mimic the effects of either one.

Some of the most relevant data supporting this concept have emerged from clinical studies demonstrating cognitive improvement and/or stabilization of cognitive impairment in subjects with early AD following treatment with intranasal insulin or a PPAR agonist.58,60,127130

That really saddens me. I never met the man, but his acting made my life better because he made me laugh in a way few others could. May he Rest in Peace.

Best movie experience I ever had. Opening weekend for Penn State football at home for the 1978 season. Went to see the movie the evening of the game after having certain beverages from about 10 AM in the morning, with the only break to watch the football game in Beaver stadium as well as to walk to and back from the stadium to Beaver towers. The movie theater was filled with the craziest, rowdiest crowd I have ever witnessed at a movie theater. Rocky Horror Show didn't even come close to that experience. It was like watching a movie of ourselves (I ran with a pretty crazy crowd in those days - we were rather uninhibited to say the least). Definitely a comedy masterpiece and Stephen Furst was a really big part of making the movie the hit that it was.

When did he retire as a sensitivity instructor in Cleveland?

Sad. I got an early Father's Day present from my wife yesterday: the 30th anniversary edition of Animal House, and we watched it yesterday afternoon. Those who saw my reply under Zenophile's post of a few days ago ( see link below for the thread) about seeing Animal House in the summer of 1978 with my then girlfriend (now wife) and our midnight trip to Beaver Stadium that night know how much I love that movie. RIP Flounder, you were taken far too young.

I am sincerely jealous of you. Sounds awesome.

For those of us at PSU during that time, hard to ever forget the impact this movie had on frat parties that fall. Seems like many frats tried their best to recreate certain aspects of the movie. Great times.

RIP Stephen Furst ("Flounder")
