in what is not the most shocking development at the Olympics.

just adding, I am getting a big kick out of china building the ski jumping venue in the middle of a nuclear power plant. Tells me one of two things (or both): a) that they are proud of the industrial look of China and think it is a good thing to advertise and/or b) that it is a strait F U to anyone who thinks they are going to reign China in in terms of environmental considerations.

I thought those cooling towers were for some steel refining operation.

Absolutely the most bizarre thing I’ve ever seen at the Olympics. In the past scenery was as important as the event. That was the fugliest thing I’ve ever seen.

It’s a closed steel plant. Closed in summer Olympics held in China to improve air quality.

agree - it’s an ugly venue for skiing.

If there's something wrong, or even suspected as being wrong, in sports Christine is sure to find it...I wonder if she does any self-reflection.

A Russian? Doping? As you point out; shocking!

The International Olympic Committee is coming down hard on them. Instead of competing under the Russian Olympic Committee name they will now compete as the Sarmatian Olympic Committee. That will really show them.

So the positive test was for steroids? Is that good for figure skating?

Apparently the Russian skater involved is their 15 year old star who was being said to be the best ever. She (reportedly) tested positive for an angina drug that had a Chinese swimmer and other athletes banned in the past (similar to Sharapova as well). The drug is not approved by the FDA or European medicine agency.

It was found in a test before the Olympics and the Russian Olympic committee is trying to say it was an error. They and IOC are wrangling behind the scenes on how to handle it.

Who wants to bet the IOC turns a blind eye…again?

Thanks for the backstory. I wondered how it was only discovered between the time she won and the medal ceremony. Looks like they were hoping she'd lose and nobody would be the wiser. It would just go away.

Oops.

There’s no reason for a 15 year old to be taking an angina drug- especially an Olympic athlete who knows it is a banned substance. (It was a scandal at Russia’s own Sochi Olympics too IIRC).

I don’t buy the Russian story that it’s an error either. You don’t suddenly test positive for this drug just out of the blue for no reason. Russia’s state sponsored doping history gives me zero patience to listen to Russian official’s excuses.

My guess is they are good at masking it and timing administration to drug tests. They likely screwed up in this case and it was caught on a pre Olympic test.

Well Putin and Xi are buddy buddies. Look for this to disappear.
True. Given Russia’s history of doping, the IOC should have acted already. That they are still ‘talking’ makes me think they’ll cave and do some ridiculous ‘non punishment’ punishment (like the Russians competing under the name Russian Olympic Committee rather than just Russia. 🙄).

The IOC makes the NCAA look like the Stasi in comparison.

The Olympics are now the Tour De France - if you ain't cheating you ain't trying. The IOC is 100% complicint in this - allowing the Russians to compete under the IOC banner after the disgrace in Sochi - what a joke.

The sad truth is Penn is suing to allow a transgender swimmer to compete and shatter NCAA records. How far we've fallen in order to win.
I don’t think it’s about winning at all - I went to Penn and no one really cares about sports there. It’s about incredibly over the top PC insanity in this case. This swimmer clearly was on PEDs - in this case male hormones - for 20 years. There’s no way to suppress that massive advantage.

If she were a Dutch or Canadian skater she would have already been disqualified.
If she were from one of those countries she wouldn't have been on that crap in the first place. The Putin strategy: try, lie, and deny. I sincerely hope some Russian figures out a way to assassinate that bastard, for too many reasons to specify.

Shocking that an ex-KGB agent would rule his country like an ex-KGB agent. Evil.

Russia admits figure skater was doping but did it "honestly". Another huge black eye for the Olympics and Russia.

This is exactly why I have given up on the Olympics, both winter and summer. There will never be another “miracle on ice “or athlete like ski-jumper Eddie the “Eagle.” It’s all about individual accomplishments, and little, if anything, to do with national pride.

The best female sprinter missed the summer games because she smoked a little weed, the opposite of a performance enhancing drug. But by all means, don't punish the Russians.
Do you really believe that ? Most likely she privately tested and was hot for PEDs. So she smokes weed to "disqualify " herself and then gets all of this media sympathy.

The Olympics have been dirty since I was a kid in the late 60s to early 70s once anabolics came into wide usage .

Sure she would. If they knew about it and someone had access.
