Russian figure skater tests positive for steroids

The Olympics are now the Tour De France - if you ain't cheating you ain't trying. The IOC is 100% complicint in this - allowing the Russians to compete under the IOC banner after the disgrace in Sochi - what a joke.
They always were like that.

Thanks for the backstory. I wondered how it was only discovered between the time she won and the medal ceremony. Looks like they were hoping she'd lose and nobody would be the wiser. It would just go away.

Oops.
In the old days the Russians had better testing than the IOC . They do their own private tests and if you were positive, you suffered a pulled hammy or something similar and withdrew from the event .

The Olympics have been dirty since I was a kid in the late 60s to early 70s once anabolics came into wide usage .
The stretch from 76-88 was the worst. And the DDR (East Germany) was the gold medalist in doping. It was unbelievable what their “female” athletes looked like. That country didn’t even try to fake it - one year that small, communist backwater even beat us at the Summer Games. It was one thing for the USSR to do so given their size and economy, but East Germany doing it was ridiculous.

Here’s Barbara Krause - she was left off the 76 team which won almost everything even though most of them had been also rans in the past. Left off because they screwed up her drug regimen and knew she couldn’t pass even those weak tests bqck then. Went on to win 3 golds in 1980. This is a “woman@:

PEDs have much greater effect on women. The Eastern Bloc countries with systemic, state-sponsored doping programs had all powerful female delegations. Our men could usually hold their own, but our women in the track and in the pool got killed during the height of the doping. Some good background re: swimming in this article:

We are not angels of course, but it’s a hell of a lot easier to cheat with the state supporting your efforts. I’d like to see every female sprint record from 100-800 have asterisks. Yes, that includes FloJo. Marita Koch’s 400 record from 1985 is the most ridiculous.

heard an interview a few years ago with an East German female athlete. They kept them isolated so they did not realize how abnormal and androgenized they looked. And this athlete ran into one of her child hood friend and the friend says "Inga what's happened to you you look like a man" and the athlete only then realized how much she had changed and how masculanized she was.

in what is not the most shocking development at the Olympics.

technically not a steroid. It is a drug used to treat angina. It basically improves efficiency of energy utilization in cardiac cells. Cells need less oxygen for same amount of work. So it really is performance enhancing drug.

That was still the wild Wild West years. Now it's very sophisticated and from my understanding it's something the big boys all have in common.

Very true, the old Russian truck was having an off shore lab testing samples and pulling positive athletes . This was going on back in 1988 yet.

All true again, we had a big population to pull from and our guys were great but they did use. We have smart people too that'll help you beat the test .

a friend of mine is an expert in measuring levels of drugs and chemicals in blood samples and consults with the anti doping agencies. He said they can look at chromatographs and see peaks they know are steroids and performance enhancing agents, but are not on the banned list so athlete technically cannot be banned. Until they crack the structure, name it and then put the drug on the banned list. That was essentially what the BALCO was peddling. My friend was in on examining a bunch of the BALCO samples.

Yep, there's big money there.

Just like street drugs. Make couple changes, change the name and presto...it’s not on the illegal list. Stay one step ahead of the man.

I don’t think it’s about winning at all - I went to Penn and no one really cares about sports there. It’s about incredibly over the top PC insanity in this case. This swimmer clearly was on PEDs - in this case male hormones - for 20 years. There’s no way to suppress that massive advantage.
A disgrace.

Do you really believe that ? Most likely she privately tested and was hot for PEDs. So she smokes weed to "disqualify " herself and then gets all of this media sympathy.
I wouldn't rule that out but, OTOH, if she had taken performance enhancing drugs, wouldn't THEY have ALSO shown up on her tests? I have to assume they were testing for those kinds of medications.

The Russian skater is apparently allowed to compete. You want to know why this continues look no further than the IOC and Court of Arbitration for Sport. They do not hold the line and constantly undercut the penalties.

Just as I said. Putin and Xi are buddies and this was going to go away. She gets her medal, she gets to compete in the singles. Just can attend medal ceremonies.

just adding, I am getting a big kick out of china building the ski jumping venue in the middle of a nuclear power plant. Tells me one of two things (or both): a) that they are proud of the industrial look of China and think it is a good thing to advertise and/or b) that it is a strait F U to anyone who thinks they are going to reign China in in terms of environmental considerations.
FWIW, nuclear is the cleanest and safest form of energy available, and it's not even close. If you believe that CO2 is a pollutant, it's the 100s of coal plants being built in china that you should have concerns over.

And, part of the reason she was cleared?
CAS Director General Matthieu Reeb said preventing Valieva from competing at the Games "would cause her irreparable harm" ... especially considering she's a minor.
Athletes under 16 are held to less stringent doping standards than that of their adult counterparts ... in the eyes of CAS.
FYI, Russia isn't even officially competing in the Olympics because of pervasive cheating. They're officially called the Russian Olympic Committee.
The governing body also said because Valieva failed the test six weeks ago ... and not at the Olympics, it'd be unfair to keep her from skating.
So, Valieva will now compete ... most likely.
The World Anti Doping Agency -- as well as the International Olympic Committee -- have the right to appeal the decision, allowing her to continue skating.

Opening the door to even more doping of the youngest athletes

Were we expecting anything different? Sadly, it's likely the doping itself that may cause her "irreparable harm".

I wasn't. I mean the US brought the world 'Mrs. Jones'... looked the other way for years til she started passing forged checks.

I mean her husband at the time was busted (before the olympics) and we still allowed her to compete.

LdN

The “underage” argument is comical at best. If an athletes is not subject to the same standards then a minimum age is required.
It’s almost as if the Russians knew she couldn’t be stopped from competing because of that rule. 🧐

meanwhile ALL of the other athletes have their dreams dashed if she makes the podium. There will be no ceremony…even if she gets Bronze. In that case the Gold medal winner doesn’t stand atop and hear her anthem played.

Absurd.

If you never watched Icarus on Netflix, now is the time.

The story is expanding. Now they’ve caught 3 cardiac drugs in the system of a 15 year old (2 not officially banned). Russia continues its state sponsored doping. Her coach was accused of doping other skaters she was in charge of in 2019.

Wow, the same organization, the IOC, that awarded the WINTER Olympics to an area that got zero inches of snow last year (and still has slaves) clears a cheating Russian to compete. Shocking isn't it. What a joke.
Short diversion from the performance enhancing issue, but of the 20-30 places on the planet that can support a winter games…most of them are struggling with consistent snow…and the problem is growing.

Back to the original issue…..

She claims she took her grandfather's heart medication by mistake. If you believe that she lives with her grandfather, the question still remains, what drug did she think she was taking? Also, apparently two currently non-banned heart medications were also found in her system. I wonder how many other Russian athletes will test positive for these same drugs.

right. and he was dismissed. no longer allowed to compete. why? both his risk and that he'd have to take drugs that are not permitted.
Sorta. He would be allowed to take those meds. Those exceptions have to be noted and supported. All athletes can take meds if supported, including adhd meds. We just hear about the ones that magically didn’t let anyone know they “need” them.

But you are right…the risk was deemed too great. Meds or no meds

fair enough...but this was a KNOWN illegal drug and was not reported. I don't know if this drug is ever allowed or not. This is the same drug that got the Russian tennis player suspended. And I am 100% sure she wasn't having heart problems. I am willing to lay a large bet that this gal isn't having heart problems either. In fact, she said she took her grandfather's pills by mistake.

There is no need for a 15 year old to be on 3 cardiac meds. Frankly, she’s not even claiming the banned med was hers and needed. She said she shared a glass of water with her grandfather and somehow got some of his meds in her system. Just laughable.

This is the same drug other Russian athletes have been caught using and suspended for at other Olympics. This is not a rare occurrence with Russian athletes.

I see other athletes are now speaking out wondering why they got suspended while this skater is given a free pass.

You think any of the 3 judges wanted some Novachuck in their coffee?
