Ryan Anderson on a wrestling roster

That's surprising. He could've gotten money at a lot of D1's, and he ends up at a local D3. He's gonna big-brother a lot of D3 kids.

Seems like the juco route would have been a better way to go.
In terms of the total picture - I disagree.

JUCO can be a less than ideal "environment" for some. Especially the one I would have guessed he ended up at given his initial college choice. That would have been really rolling the dice.

If he stays in school and gets his degree - that's really the goal he needs to be focused on given history. He'll still have the same opportunities wrestling wise going this route, wrestling is probably the least difficult aspect of accomplishing his goals right now.

Hopefully, this setting is conducive to his getting taken care of what he needs to get taken care of. He's close to home, has some local support, has some familiarity with the team, hopefully it works out.

There were some questions about him on the "Favorite Wrestlers" thread. Annieat285 tipped me off to the fact that he apparently will be wrestling this season and will doing so in Piscataway this coming weekend:

Am I the only one who saw Cyclones in the URL and assumed Ryan was back at Iowa State? Seems like a crazy coincidence to land at another school called Cyclones doesn't it?

Anyway, best of luck to Ryan.

I agree that JUCO is not the best environment, but what makes you think that the specific JUCO you’re thinking of is more of a risk than others?

If he does well for a few years academically and in wrestling, nothing prevents him from jumping on the cruiseliner.

I know a few kids who have attended. One of them did very well, but he was already on a good track (went there as a late bloomer and in an effort to land in D1, not because of academics) and he kept his head down and did what he had to to get out after a year. A couple of others weren't so lucky - like it or not, some, if not most, of the kids that end up there are there for a reason.

Not that it's much different from other JUCOs. But given the distance, sending a kid who has struggled making academics a priority out there, far away from home and expecting him to get it together - to me, there are far better options. Now some kids need to get far away from home and a bad environment, but this isn't the case here.

Ok. In general, I agree. Most kids at JUCOs are there for a reason and that reason means a lot of them don’t end up going past the JUCO level.

I think that is the case at JUCOs across the board and nothing unique to the JUCO in question.

Agreed, and that was my main point.

No specific calling out the JUCO in question as being a worse environment than most - other than in his case it's halfway across the country in an very unfamiliar environment. Not that it's any better IMO, just because the wrestling's good. Picking to go there because of the wrestling is a mistake that many don't survive - academically (as is the case with most JUCOs as you point out).

As I stated above, wrestling is the least difficult aspect of his achieving his goals. There are a lot of other factors that should be considered ahead of the wrestling aspect.

He will compete this year and sit next year get his grades and transfer to D1 with 3 years to go.I know people wont like to hear this but Rutgers will be on on the mix for him

That's the same JUCO Steve Spearman went to, right?

No thanks.

Nobody thinks Anderson is that kind of risk. But his own risks kept him out of Ames, therefore he needs an environment with greater focus, support, and familiarity.

On a lighter note: the OP linked roster defaults to Search By Jersey. Guess where the first few wrestlers are from.

I think only one person on here won't like to hear Rutgers will be in the mix for him.

Seems like a great plan to me, he is very familiar with that staff and spent a lot of time in that room while in HS. I'll be wishing him good luck, I've met him a few times and he always seems like a nice kid. It's not the easiest thing he's attempting despite us old guys thinking that school is cake. Hope it works out.

No, Spearman went to Clackamas, I think. I was thinking of ICCC, but the same applies as alluded to in the discussion above. As with most all JUCOs. Not really where you want to end up IMO.

Spearman definitely went towa Central -- but it wasn't his only school, who knows, might have been at Clackamas too. Regardless, what a terrible cautionary tale.

You old guys might remember Darrell Keller from Ok State. He did a year at a JUCO school in Washington while his twin brother Dwayne went to Ok State and won an NCAA title in Rec Hall in 1968. Roderick then brought Darrell to Ok State where he won 2 NCAA titles including OW when he beat Larry Owings in the finals in 1971.

Rumor has it that Mountain Dew gave him a $5000 scholarship.

Silliness aside the kid as a blast to watch for sure and I hope he is on a track that will bring him back up to D1 in a year or two.

I didn't know that. At one point he was at Clackamass.

Agreed.

These young men and their families must make tough decisions, knowing far more than anyone here. Sometimes the decisions are awesome, other times not so much. We won't figure it out here, best I can say is good luck to him.
