Saban blames asst. coaches for blowout loss to Clemson

In a way he was kind fo right. But that is kind of the 'cost of success'. For the last few seasons, coaches have been jumping on Saban's staff not because they want 'life time' gigs in Tuscaloosa, but because they know serving a season or two under Saban punches their ticket for bigger & better jobs.

Take last season as an example. Locksley took the OC job knowing he'd use it as a stepping stone ... it turned into the HC job at UMD. Gattis followed him to Bama, basically taking a lateral move to leave Penn ST, but he used his year under Saban as a ticket to be the OC at Michigan.

Bill Belichick has been fighting the same issues every year for the last 10 years.

Hmmm. Before taking the Detroit job, Matt Patricia was DC for 6 years. And spent 14 total on the staff. Josh McDaniels has been OC since 2012. So how does this come close to “fighting the same issues every year for the last 10 years”?

Well, Nick... keep hiring the Lane Kiffins, Steve Sarkisians, and Mike Locksleys of the world and see if anything changes.

Obviously, Saban is the most successful college football coach ever. But, he just appears to be a miserable sob in most of his public appearances.

I am serious when I say this... I would rather finish 9-3 with Franklin as our coach than 12-0 with Saban as our coach. His entire model of an "NFL farm club" just doesn't appeal to me.

go take a look at the Bellicheck coaching tree around the league before you say things like this. Original poster was very correct.

Man, I cannot believe a huge ego is in denial and blaming everyone else....we rarely see that anymore. Huge dose of sarcasm there.

Maybe if he would stop hiring every hired gun or disgraced coach as a coach and or "consultant" they wouldn't be so interested in looking for their next gig.
Boo hoo for him. Cry me a river.

He probably does. These guys are bolting for more than just $$$.
I’m sure he does not hand over part of his salary. However, I’m also sure that his public bitching is an effort to pressure the school to give the asst coaches more $$$.

Selective New England Patriots memory. Typical.

I haven't tracked all of the guys that saban has lost in recent years, but it seems that most are taking promotions and therefore are taking more money. If some is good, more is better.

I’m well aware. In 20 seasons with the Patriots, 5 coordinators have moved on to Head Coaching jobs (one went the college route first). Not exactly the turnover on the staff Saban deals with — which was the point I was targeting. And I backed it up by showing how long a couple of coordinators stayed (and is still there in one case). Don’t let facts bother you though.

Track record is this is the very first time Saban has complained about the situation. If you guys want to look at track record he has basically lost a good % of his staff every off season to other opps. Heck, half of the SEC Head Coaches came from Saban's staffs: Will Muschamp, Jeremy Pruitt, Jimbo Fisher, Kirby Smart ... Saban never has complained until now.

I think the difference is that this group started to solicit themselves and focus on their next jobs BEFORE Bama's season was over. It's one think to accept a HC job at Tenn or Georgia or South Carolina.... but still be committed to completing your job at Bama until AFTER the season. It's another thing to be soliciting yourself for other jobs and then be focused on those other jobs BEFORE the season is over.

No other coach has lost more assistants over the years than Saban, but this is the first year the guy has truly complained. I think he deserves a little benefit of doubt.

Does belichick ever complain about losing assistants? Turnover on his staff rarely if ever leads to a regression. They just win.

This is the interwebs, so I might as well guess and overreact. Maybe saban blaming assistants is a sign that he and Bama are on the decline and he knows it.

I do not know the inner-workings of his assistants leaving. Lets say that 2 years ago when Matt Patricia was leaving ... let's say that Patricia focused on his interviewing with the Lions all during January, got the Lions offer in january, and all thru the Patriots playoff run Patricia was spending more time focused on his up-coming duties with the Lions than the patriots current playoff run ..... Let's just play along and say that was the case.

In that example, IF Patricia had done that (I do NOT think he did), then I would say Belichick would be very annoyed.

THIS is what Saban is complaining about. I live down here in Atlanta, I get more SEC coverage than I can tolerate. I've seen Saban lose countless assistants over the years and Saban has always been very supportive of them. Saban is usually promoting his assistants for better jobs. And he often stays close friends with his ex-assistants. ............ Again, Saban is not complaining that he lost assistants. He is not complaining that his assistants took jobs at other schools..... He has a proven track record of being perfectly good with this. What he is saying is that THIS group went over his line in that they not only solicited for other jobs BEFORE Bama's season was over but they also began to focus more on those future job duties than seeing the end of Bama's season.

Same scenario happened a few years back with Kirby Smart accepting the UGA job. Kirby stayed on Bama's staff thru the end. Kirby stayed focus on his duties at Bama until the season was over ......... Saban did not say 1 word about how Kirby Smart handled it.

No he doesnt hand over money, but you can bet sees that six-seven figures of comp that could go to him from the school or booster club gets paid out to his top coaches.

What a low life. Something Jim would never do. He's the boss and accepts full blame for his very few failures. What's really telling is the way the kids look up to Jim. Just a matter of time and crybaby Saban will be replaced by Jim as the top CF coach along with Dabo.

Literally LOL. You never fail to bring a smile to my day wolve! Thanks for the giggle. I needed that.

Ha ha stop. We are on to you. You had a good run as a UM homer, but the over the top incessant fawning of UM and Harbaugh, has exposed you as a troll.

His complaining also coincides with losing the championship two of the last three years to Dabo. I think he’s feeling pressure.

No. Saban has been very vocal to complain about stuff he does not like. Saban is usually a pretty open book when it comes to his feelings on certain subjects.

The only issue I have with Saban complaining about this is that HE is the one who hired that group. When he hired Mike Locksley did he really think he was hiring a 'stand up guy'?? If I were an AD, and I went out and hired Rick Pitino to run my BB program, and then 2 years later the NCAA was slapping us with probation. I could complain about Pitino. I could complain that he was unethical. And my complaints would most likely be correct..... but I hired him.

Coaches leave. That's part of the business. Saban gets that. But there is a big difference in bringing in a Kirby Smart or a Will Muschamp in terms of integrity vs. Mike Locksley.

Coaches left when he didn’t have big competition like Clemson. He didn’t complain then.
Your point is spot on though. He hired them. It’s his fault.

Well if Gattis turns around Michigan’s crappy offense he will be long gone for a head coaching gig somewhere guaranteed. Get prepared for a few decommits. He is a great recruiter if he does well with the offense some program will jump on him quick

Totally agree. UM is kind of in same situation with Gattis that we were in a few years back with JoMo. Kind of a no win situation. If Gattis comes in and totally turns around the UM Offense, then he will be a hot commodity and will be getting offers to leave (like JoMo). Gattis may turn them down initially, but eventually a good D1 offer will come to him and he'll leave (like JoMo). On the flip, if Gattis' Offense does not perform, then UM is back to a struggling offense.

But again, to go back to the main point of this thread... all these coaches Saban, Franklin, Harbaugh ... they understand that assistant coaches leaving is part of the deal.... Saban was not complaining that these guys left. He was complaining with HOW they left.
