Sad reality...

I mean hell, I am pretty sure there are some students that when I was at PSU iwould not know what "JVP" meant without more context.
Granted this was the mid to late 90s, so they might have just thought you got a botched Stone Temple Pilots shirt.

Tangential story, we invited an international student to join us at the Blue/White game one year, they 100% up until the moment they walked into the stadium and saw what was going on were expecting what we call soccer to be going on.

Your input is worth about as much as my story, it seems. I'm tempted to guess what the DB stands for in your username, but I have a feeling we all already know.
I thought your story was very good. That the man thought the stand up Joe was your father is a compliment to you and your father, respect. A compliment in my book any day.

I'm shocked a kid from India had no idea who Joe Paterno was.

Actually, now that I think about it, I'm more shocked you told us that story.
I agree. I would not expect JVP to be known in India.

But when I first read the post, I read "Indiana" instead of "India", haha. And I'm thinking, yeah a kid from "Indiana" should probably know JoPa. lolololol

Now that's pretty funny. They went to a soccer game, and a football game broke out.

Haters are gonna hate. You seem predisposed to hate athletes. Put into context, fans of country western know Taylor Swift. Fans of American literature know Hemmingway. If you are associated with Penn State then you should know JoePa. It's a travesty if you do not. It's on par with not knowing who your congressmen are. For those who don't know Joe, point to the library on the main campus and tell them to do some research.
Taylor Swift is not country. Real country is slowly dying off one icon at a time. Sad but true.

I'm a life long PSU football fan. PSU was the only school I applied to. I started at University Park as a freshman and spent 4+ years there in the back half of the 90s. I can't recall ever hearing "JVP" while there. Joe & JoePa? Yup. I say JoePa, you say Terno? Sure. JVP? Nope. If you asked me what Joe's middle name was, I would have told you, "No idea." When I first joined Rivals, I wasn't sure what JVP meant at first. Took me a minute to figure it out. IMHO, students not knowing what JVP means is NBD.

There is a sad reality though. Freshman in 2018 were around 11 years old in 2011. Unless they were from a family that bled Blue and White, they might not be that familiar with Joe. It won't be long until Joe is a historical figure that most freshman aren't that aware of.

I wonder how many Alabama students know who their stadium is named after? Some guy named Denny-Bryant I think.

Yes, the BoT said that in a short time, no one would remember Joe. No, I guess they actually said no one would remember the crap they threw on him.

Many who enjoyed “country” music in the 20s and 30s would say it died off when the people you now attribute to real country came on the scene. Music always changes, even within the genre, doesn’t make it less “real.”
