Schiano to Rutgers (link)

Thank god both my kids are graduating in less than 2 years. I could see tuition going up by 20% for this nonsense. Coach Campanile was handed a nightmare and he did a darn good job considering the mess Chris Ash left him. Why not give Nunzio Campanile a real shot at a fraction of the cost? What the simpletons pushing for Schiano do not understand is that winning in a water down Big East conference is profoundly different to winning in the Big 10 conference. He’s going to do the same thing he did in the BE, schedule very weak OOC teams and hope he could beat two of the following Illinois, Purdue, Indiana or Minnesota. All for 200 million in new spending (in salary & facility upgrades). All this on the backs of NJ taxpayers.

I said something similar last week I think. I see this hiring as kicking the can down the street a little further. Rutgers should have probably hired Campanile (or similar) and tried to tread water until they get a full share from the B1G. Then look at their finances and start trying to catch up. By doing this now, they are borrowing against those future payments which will make things even more painful -- especially if Schiano doesn't get them to a bunch of bowl games in the near future.

What delusion

I realize Rutgers is in the East but if teams like Indiana, Minnesota, NW can put together 8+ win seasons then Rutgers could get to 7 wins with the right coach. Schedule OOC cupcakes to go 3-0, beat Maryland to get to 4 wins and then win 3 of the cross over games against the West. That IMO is not an impossible task and will be Schiano's blueprint for the program. I would think the majority of the fanbase isn't asking for 10 win seasons, but 7-8 wins seems a realistic goal. They will be kind of like a Pitt in that he will likely get a couple good local kids to stay home who end up having success in the NFL that the fans can thump their chest about as well.
If those 3 crossover games against the west include Iowa, Wisconsin, and Minnesota, then good luck to that blueprint.

If those 3 crossover games against the west include Iowa, Wisconsin, and Minnesota, then good luck to that blueprint.
The delusional posts now on the Rutgers board make Lair posters resemble Socrates. They immediately want to dumb their OOC down to as many FCS programs as possible. Anything to become bowl eligible. ALL 4* and 5* Jersey kids will now be Rutgers locks with St. Greg. ( I guess he got them all last time around ). All BIG programs are quaking in fear. It goes on and on.

The sad thing is that a reuses monkey could be more successful than Ash, so whatever improvement he makes will only solidify the legend of Greg. The comedy gold there is all fools gold.

Now that rutgres has hired Schiano, has it been confirmed whether rutgres caved completely and agreed to all of Schiano's terms?

The larger question is now that they've committed the money to the staff and facilities, where will they get the money to spellcheck their uniforms going forward?

The Star-Ledger is spinning the final version of Schiano's contract as a compromise but to me it looks like Schiano got everything he wanted in the deal. Supposedly Governor Murphy is going to be introducing Greg Schiano at his first press conference.

not really , he didnt get the flights or the guarantee of the football building
highlights...

The deal, unanimously approved Tuesday morning and obtained by NJ.com, runs eight years and is worth $32 million. The buyout stands at 76.875 percent of his remaining contract, starting at $24.6 million. That formula would then decrease the buyout to:

— $18.45 million if he’s fired after the 2021 season
— $15.375 million after 2022
— $12.3 million after 2023
— $9.225 million after 2024
— $6.15 million after 2025
— $3.075 million after 2026
— nothing after the final year of his contract, 2027
On Schiano’s end, he would owe $8 million if he leaves before Dec. 1 of next year and decreasing by $2 million a year until 2025, when it flattens to $1 million.

Rutgers will provide $7.7 million to pay Schiano’s staff, increasing by 3 percent a year.

since there was math on the page today, said another way, his assistant coaches will average $770,000 per year. I think the budget for the clingons comes from someplace else.

also....

Schiano famously asked for unlimited private jet use the first time around, but he came down to earth (figuratively speaking, of course) in the second set of negotiations. He will be entitled to private airfare for recruiting purposes, and private air travel for other university business, if funding is available. If private funding is not available, he will fly commercially with first-class tickets.

Also, Schiano cannot walk away without penalty if Rutgers does not have a shovel in the ground to build a football-only facility by a certain date. In return, Rutgers put in writing that a football-only operations center is “necessary and desirable” and has committed to developing plans for such a facility “as soon as reasonably practicable.”

Schiano is entitled to a $100,000 bonus for reaching the Big Ten Championship and $200,000 for winning it; bowl bonuses range from $75,000 for a minor bowl appearance to $350,000 for winning a national championship.

Nope. Budget includes employer's share of payroll taxes and employee benefits. I'll estimate that conservatively at 30% of salary, so we're talking an average of slightly below $595k p.a.

Sluggo: But that’s what Schiano really wanted. All that other stuff was a wish list to be whittled down so Rutgers and Trenton could save face. No one ever walked away from the deal, instead it was a well orchestrated play where everyone remembered their lines and the audience went home happy.

Phil Murphy should remember what happened to the other ex-Goldman guy who tried to interpose himself on the Rutgers football program.

A good analogy, but I wonder if the audience realizes that their going to have pay for all future performances if they attend or not?

As I wrote, I was being conservative.

Not to worry, though. The life expectancy of a Schiano assistant is about 1.19 seasons.

Wonder if the Buffmeister is going to try to buy his old house back.

The cost of living in New Jersey may be the highest in the entire country. For those of us who pay property taxes and college tuition for their kids this is upsetting to say the least. I firmly believe that Coach Campanile would have done a very good job if given the opportunity at a fraction of the price.

In their present frenzy if he said that would make him happy, they would evict the existing residents at gun point and hand him the deed mortgage free.

You just know when a State has its priorities in order when the Governor introduces a college football coach

Well perhaps it’s caused by the hilarity of it all if one visits the Rutgers board. Schiano is a decent coach and you guys made a good choice. This time around he’s more experienced, plus hopefully not as arrogant and controlling. Plus he has infinity better facilities, but no rational person would deny that he has a much more daunting hill to climb.

I guess when one has been mired in futility for 150 years, a ten year run of mediocrity is mesmerizing. And in total it was mediocre, you can’t just cherrypick one or two overachieving seasons. I hope he does well. However delusional people on your board calling for BIG championships and playoff appearances on a yearly basis is hilarious. Penn State is light years ahead of Rutgers and we can’t accomplish this regularly, but St. Greg is going to it?

Why don’t you just try and actually win a BIG conference game and reach 500 football first? Once again I sincerely hope that Rutgers becomes a competitive program. But I guess it is the Holiday season and even the downtrodden can have sugar plums dancing in their heads.

None of that is germane since it is a year-to-year sport and we spent a fraction of what you all spent for 100 years.

Now that the gap as been closed lol... Good luck.

I hope you enjoyed your free ride.

Do you want to compare the net earnings of each program for 100 years. That ought to be good for a laugh.

You can't be serious. You were the worst P5 program this year by a wide margin.

You basing that on one half of one game where we were down 7 starters and didn't care about the outcome?
So?

What will happen to your coach when he gets beat out for guys & still can't run an offense...

Remember, had Schiano never left there would have never been Barkley or Blacknall and definitely no Gesicki, so... Cross your fingers and enjoy going back to mediocrity.
