I have received a number of inquiries regarding whether I intend to run for BOT again this year. The nominations are upon us and I have no desire to mislead anyone. I have thought long and hard about this. I will NOT be a candidate this year.

The reasons for this include the predictable mix of personal and professional issues which, frankly, are not important to anyone but me. I was given the great honor of working with the A9 in the Freeh Report Review, and have enjoyed my... time with those trustees I worked closely with. I believe that the review has been a success, and I am proud of the part I have been permitted to play.

There are a number of excellent candidates, which will make my own choices as a voter difficult. I urge you to think about the issues, and to do your best to find out what Trustees actually do. More specifically, each of should focus on what Trustees CANNOT do. Nine trustees on a board of 36 cannot elect a chair, defeat a budget, hire a President, or even do a whole lot to change the culture. Please try to engage the sitting trustees as much as possible regarding what they think is possible, and weigh carefully the claims of those who say that tremendous waves of change are right around the corner if only you elect them.

If you sit on the PSU Board of Trustees, it is not too much to ask that you confine your profit-making activities to organizations not connected to PSU. If you are getting a profit from this University's contracts with the outside world, you are violating the spirit of the rules. If you are not violating the letter of the rules, then the rules should be changed so you cannot make decisions that impact your personal bottom line.

Many thanks to those who have supported me in the past. I'm not going anywhere. Let's get the candidates nominated so we can have a spirited discussion about the future. WE ARE!

This whole mess has outed what you've written above. None of the trustees really cared about Penn State. They cared about how it could enrich their financials & their social circle. Bottom line.

I would only say that in my experience, that is not true by any means of all the Trustees. But it is like any sort of representative government--people always complain that our government is wasteful. It is. But WE are wasteful in this country, at least a fairly high percentage of us. That means a wasteful government represents us.

Sorry to hear that but hopefully we'll get some new faces and desirable candidates.
Are you done with your part of the Freeh Report review?
Will we ever hear anything from it?

Can everyone let me know who the people are on the ballot that will put Paterno and the Sandusky scandal as their top priority? I need to vote for people who wouldn't waste time on such dead issues.

Just write in Dan Coccsucker and you'll be safe. Realize that it's a lot of letters for your addled brain to memorize, but if you start practicing now you might get it down by election time.

You're such a clown. They are important issues, except to jackasses like you. All you fools want is something pinned on Paterno and Penn State. Go away you PL troll.

Sometimes more can be accomplished outside an organization than within it. Perhaps that will be the case with you. Even if you did nothing more at all, you have served Penn State well and I wish you all the best.

Think the logical conclusion we can draw from that is to stop giving government more and more power.

This is great news... that means I didn't actually hear it being brought up repeatedly during the B10 title game and rose bowl. Glad to know I must have just imagined it.

Opps, I nominated you this morning.....life's dilemmas. guessed that your plate was full and it may be an indirect conflict due to your participation in the "Freeh Report" review.

We are with you one way or another. We are looking forward to that review if you can it public.

Now David Mullaly and Ryan Bagwell, I nominated both of you as well so don't let me down, Run (like Sayquon) and win (like the Nittany Lions)!

Dem,
Thanks for all of your efforts. Unfortunately, your words will cause many like me to move closer toward giving up hope. When someone as passionate as you finally gets a chance to "peak behind the curtain" and when you do you then decide it's not worth the effort it is depressing.
Thanks again, and if you are ever allowed to speak freely I look forward to hearing your reflections.

I don't think that is the correct spelling of that name.

Will we ever know what you learned? Fixed it for ya. IMHO, it is likely that the review will never see the light of day.

Ryan hasn't announced, and unless he changed his mind in the past 24 hours, is not asking for noms this year. Perhaps this thread can become a list for who is putting their hat in the ring, not just PS4, but any they are aware of.

So far I have only seen Alice Pope declare, but Barbara Doran seems to indicate all 3 incumbents are seeking renomination.

Like the serious GOVERNANCE issues that were revealed by the OGBOT's piss-poor handling of the Sandusky/Second Mile Scandal?

Students are PO'd about likely tuition increases-a direct result of the mismanagement of the University's funds due to failed crisis management. I had one in my twitter mentions a week ago or so who was very upset about that prospect.

It's quite possible that you're drawing the wrong conclusion.

Timing, and the competition, are very significant factors in an election. Last May, I stated on this board that I thought dem's chances would be significantly better in the 2017 election than they had been in the 2016 election. Alas, the dynamics have changed. demlion didn't seek my advice this year, but if he had I would have advised that he not run in this election.

I don't doubt for a second that Larry is truly passionate about Penn State. However, I am fully in agreement with his decision that he should not represent us.

I have seen too many times in which he has argued dishonestly on this board. Many times I have had to quote his own posts word for word in the very thread that he has argued something to expose a lie or a deliberate attempt to completely misrepresent something. This tells us he not only has difficulty making cogent and consistent arguments but more importantly has some character flaws that will not lead us to the truth.

The battle that we have to expose the truth is against a network of powerful people who can corrupt those of lesser character and crush someone of a weak intellect. We do have good and strong people in the fight like Bagwell and Mullaly, but Larry would fall woefully short as would anyone of you who would giving up hope based on Larry's decision which I do very much respect.

For Larry, understand the difficulty in decision to put forth the time and effort required to be a BOT member where, due to structural and other issues, you cannot make a difference.

Posted by me:

Barry for clarification purposes.. Are you in fact putting your name into the nomination process? If so congrats abd best wishes.

Response from Barry:

More than that........I am "putting my name into the ELECTION process"

The "nomination" process is a requirement to get one's name on the ballot (supplied through PSU).
When the election takes place later this Spring, folks can vote for whomever they feel they should - either listed on the ballot, or via "write-in".....so I don't consternate much about Penn State's "nomination" process
(A nomination process which became much more "pain in the ass" for everyone involved, and works to REDUCE the number of non-incumbent candidates - - - changes that were made with the APPROVAL AND SUPPORT of the A9, once they were in those seats) .

I am "in it" until the end, through the Spring ELECTIONS.........no matter what - and thus I am much more focused on providing a candidate (me) for ELECTION, who will stand for "responsible governance" for Penn State.

Otherwise, from what we have seen thus far, there may not be a single candidate available who provides an option for those folks who DO care about responsible governance......first, foremost, and always.

Moving forward - as we approach the elections - most of the "relevant stuff" will be posted to the "Interwebs" via FaceBook.....though I expect it will also find its way over to this board

Interestingly enough, tuition has been relatively flat over the last five years compared to pre-Sandusky. Perhaps if C&S went to police, we wouldn't be a quarter of a billion in the hole.
