Sean Clifford

That’s ok. Spencer Rattler is still a top five Heisman candidate.
Was listening to a Morgantown station. Somebody who went to OK for WVU/OK game was laughing because a lot of people there are campaigning for the #2 QB because Rattler doesn’t throw a good deep ball. The same conversation happens everywhere.

I was in CO last week and a buddy of mine is a big OU guy, he was saying the same thing, they want the Williams kid..

He has an extra year bc covid - will be fascinating to see if he comes back. I suspect he will.
If Clifford continues this level of performance and gets to a NY6 bowl, he is in the nfl next season without a doubt. It is the way of the world now, although I will qualify that by pointing out I was wrong on Dotson this year.

I was going to comment on that earlier. If he keeps playing this way, he could end up a fourth or fifth round pick, or even go higher. It would be way too risky to come back. If Clifford has a fantastic season, I think it’s a safe bet to say that the Lions will have had a fantastic season as well.

Yurcich has been a Godsend. The power of a great OC is basically amazing. Night and day difference. Sean is taking the coaching very well and everyone has bought in 110 percent.

Competent offensive coaching, an offensive line that can pass-block, and receivers who get open, catch the ball and get YAC. It's not just Clifford, it's the whole team. But he has been really good. They add just a little more running game and PSU is going to be very tough to defend.

I keep telling myself that there is no reason to think SC won’t continue to improve. On our second possession he missed an easily makable 3rd-down pass. I really was pissed we missed that opportunity to go up 14-0 and put the game away right then and there. The killer instinct seems to be absent, particularly at the beginning of games. We were up 38-3 and even with this blown opportunity we were this much close to being up 49-3 (the pick-six and the BS call that had PW stepping out of bounds). I think that a lot of the angst here stems from knowing that we could be playing so much better.

agree except Washington did step out of bounds

the roughing penalty that negated a Brown int is the one that got me

Drove his shoulder into the ground. Lucky his wrist didnt get injured.

Textbook like, to rub it in my face, yes.

I've been properly medicated for all games so far so all of these ridiculous calls happen in a dream-like state and never matter later.

It's quite nice until reality hits and the big annual "FU PEDO" call comes. It's coming.

There were 3 really devastating calls this weekend but luckily it was against the JV and we prevailed.

SC has shown tremendous improvement. He sucked last year. Fact is, we all like to say that X QB is facing Y QB, but it still comes down to team. SC isn't the most physically gifted QB so he needs to tools around him. The OL is pass blocking well and the WRs are putting together a great year. SC is reading defenses well, hitting his marks well and performing well. He's clearly worked hard and Yercich has done a great job. This is the SC we expected after his good Soph year.

But, as you say, there is an opportunity to play better and we'll need that to beat Indy, Iowa and tOSU (et all). Last week was a walk-over against a horribly outmanned squad. There aren't any conclusions to be drawn. But he did play well against Wiscy and Auburn as well.

Everyone's goal is perfection....even the 11 guys in the other color jerseys. PSU could play better.....but they can also play worse.
Running 20 plays against the wind without a mistake is a challenge. Doing it against 11 other talented and motivated D1 athletes is pretty challenging.

Its sad that some can't just come out and say the Clifford is a very good quarterback. He was the composite #8 QB and he is playing that way.
Is it coaching? Coaching is important. However, not as important as the locals here pretend. You can't polish mud,
Can't make chicken salad with chicken shit. Clifford has talent, he is in his 3rd year as a starter and he's had a full off season and spring practice to get comfortable in yet another new system. He has a proven offensive coordinator and they seem to click (to this point).
He had a bad year last year. Many did. New OC, no spring to learn the system and his 2 top RBs were lost by the 2nd quarter of the 1st game. Good players can slump and lose confidence.
So if you think the OC or the system is quarterbacking psu, you are a fanboy. The kid has talent. Say it!
Clifford went to work in the off season and he didn't quit on himself or psu. The same can't be said for many of the "faithful" here......they quit on Cliff.

Clifford said the other day that he's normally big into extra reps and off-season workouts, but Covid prevented him from playing catch with Dotson and Washington until just before the season last year. Not ideal when installing a new offense.

He's damn good and he's going to get even better. He has the best offensive coordinator in the nation behind him now and that has made his play better. He's also more confident. It's possible to compliment them both. Saying Yurcich has been a godsend is not an indictment on Clifford. Todd Blackledges play improved significantly when Joe brought back Bob Phillips, Kerry Collins raised his level when Frannie went to a pro style offense, And frankly, Jay did a damn good job with the spread, making Clark better in 08 than in 07.

MY seems to be a very well respected OC....certainly among the best.

I thought it was interesting when Bob Stoops called him an elite coach, but also when Stoops kept referring to his offense as "Air raid" before the Wisconsin game. Interesting because of all this angst going on about the Penn State running game. To me it feels like Ol Miss or Mike Leach fans complaining about the running game.

I don't see it as Air Raid. But, it will be interesting to see how the season unfolds.

100%

MY has schemes up his sleeve going forward. The use of the TE’s vs Auburn was brilliant, especially the play where the OT was split out wide in a receiver position and Strange ran up field wide open and SC just made a quick toss for a huge gain. I expect some more of these devious designs.

Note the TEs were invisible again against Villi manilli. They might be B1G this week once again.

Okay, let’s just say that not being able to punch it in after PW stepping out of bounds was extremely disappointing.
oh sure, i will agree with that and I always wonder why players want to hug the sideline, the sideline never misses a tackle

I've impressed so far with Clifford but let's be honest, his big test will come on Nov. 13 when he has to face Jim and his Big Blue wrecking machine. I've watched them play a couple of times this year and , my God, is their defense suffocating. Has the potential to be one of the best college defenses in many, many years

Yeah I didn't see it that way either which is why I was curious about his phrasing. As far as the backs go, absolutely, they could hit the hole harder or simply plow ahead and get 3 if it isn't there.
