Football Season collapse leaves Penn State in strange situation

So much of this I agree with. Franklin and his assistant coaches do not develop the talent they have. Look at Pitt for a second and consider their recruiting classes and their success. It is stunning what they have done with players with fewer star rankings. Is it the type of player they bring into their "PSU family" program that just does not assimilate to the right mindset to overachieve, or is the coaches attitudes and approach to the team? How many games have we lost by a field goal or less in the past 7 years and why do we come up short? It is a very fine line.

We are not the only school with issues and challenges. It is a what have you done for me lately sort of thing. Look at the Florida three, Texas, Nebraska, LSU - lots of parity in college football with many one time juggernaut teams mireing in mediocrity.
Temple has more NFL players than Pitt does, and they have half as many as PSU. Pitt’s SOS is in the 40s while PSU is top ten and will be top 5 by years end.

Yeah, people here would be jumping off buildings if we had Pitt's record the past, oh, 40 years! Or maybe we'd be as apathetic as that fan base. Pitt has a good team this year. They have an experienced QB who's playing well and they have a ridiculously easy schedule. And despite that, they've lost 2 games where they were solid favorites. Good grief I can't believe we have Penn State fans holding up Pitt as a program to emulate. We are in the bizarro world for sure.

Agreed. But maybe not a PSU fan. Can’t imagine anyone holding Pitt up for player development other than a Pitt fan.

This is part of the comment from earlier in this thread that caught my attention:

He uses "we" a lot when talking about Penn State so I assume he's a Penn State fan. Like I said, bizarro world.

Pitt would be lucky to be .500 if they had our schedule.

Yep. And it's the accumulation of tougher games that adds to the difficulty. It's not just playing one tough game, although I don't know who that would be on Pitt's schedule. It's playing tough game after tough game. Heck, even one of our few cupcakes, that we handled easily (Ball State) beat a team that beat them.

He's definitely not getting fired. It's also somewhat less likely than a month ago that he'll be leaving for another job...though it's still a real possibility. If neither happens, he'll be staying where he is.

By the way, it's a good article, but the last sentence of the below paragraph contains one of the funnier journalistic typo's I've seen:

Franklin mentioned after Saturday's loss that his team doesn't have enough play makers at the level of star wide receiver Jahan Dotson. While Dotson is an exceptional talent, players like Devyn Ford, Noah Cain, Theo Johnson and KeAndre Lambert-Smith were all considered highly-touted prospects with game breaking ability coming out of high school. Each of those four have now spent multiple years in the program. Why are none of those players at a level where they can shit a game individually?
they could be good backs who are struggling behind a terrible line.
