Senior World Team Trials Challenge - May 16-17

Iowa fans are convinced that their recruit, who cuts to make 65kg, is smaller than Marcus Blaze.
To be fair, I don’t know that Bassett does, unless he is over-cutting. He’s weighed-in at the last two events at 64.1 and 64.4kg, respectively. I suppose with 2-day weigh-ins it’s possible he’s giving himself a cushion.

Pj Duke has the heaviest hips since Cenzo. Lovett got in deep a couple times where it looked a bit dangerous but Duke just gave him hips and was instantly out of trouble. So impressive. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a high school kid so ready physically and especially in the hand fight besides maybe Kolat. He’s beating absolutely elite guys and doing it by being more physical and dictating where and how the match takes place. As good as Blaze is I think PJ might be the best high school wrestler I’ve seen. I think he has real shot to make the senior world team

You’re 100% right and so, like it or not, I wonder how good Melvin Miller can wind up. He wrestled Duke as hard as anyone.

You just described Mark Hall.

I can maybe get your point about Bassett (though may not fully agree with it), but the comparison to Bartlett is not a good one. Bartlett went DNP-3-2-3 at NCAAs. That's pretty good, but Bassett is college ready right now and looks to have a floor of 4X high AA, easily. He's probably as good as Bartlett (or darn close to it) right now, though 5.5 years younger than Bartlett, and for sure has realistic potential to a multiple NCAA champ. Bassett also seem likely to create a lot more carnage along the way than Bartlett did.
Agreed about Mark. Could make the same case for McIntosh having 3x champ Cox at his weight.

Slight disagreement on Bassett compared to Beau -- Beau noticeably struggled as a freshman up a weight at 149, was much better at 141. I'm not sold on Bassett being a FR AA if he wrestles up at 157.

He’s going to be great but I think that match looks very different if they wrestle again. I would expect Duke to widen the gap a bit. Miller is so dynamic though and will absolutely be someone to watch. I want to see him vs Robideau at trials

Checked into Flo to see if I could watch Elor wrestle before I head out for a hike. They've having streaming issues. Shocked! Lol.

I noticed in the Young/Blaze match that Young tried to escape a single leg by rolling across his back, giving up a four pointer in the process. In the heat of competition sometimes that muscle memory of years of scrambling in folk sometimes comes back to bite U.S. wrestlers in freestyle matches.

Elor wins 2-1 but I think she got lucky and should have lost. They put Grote on the clock a second time with a minute left but to me she had been controlling ties and center. I love Elor but she was saved this match

As I recall, PJ scored a 4 point move early, and spent the second period just holding position in the center of the mat. If he needed to score more points, he would have been attacking instead. I came away thinking Duke was happy to take the win without doing anything risky. Maybe it was respect for Miller, but we really don’t know how far separated they are based on that match.

Transplant either Mitch's or Bo Bassett's brain in Beau's body, leveraging Beaus existing skill set and athleticism, and you have a multi-time champ IMO without a doubt.

TBD about Bassett's brain. Sounds good against PA regional qualifiers, but wasn't exactly the Tazmanian Devil against Beau or Blaze. We'll see if that mentality holds up against D1 AAs. Beau was a high scorer in HS too, just without the self-promo barrage.

Also not sure about the "multi-time champ without a doubt" part. Plausible. But Mendez is still awfully good -- skilled even. Beau lost in the finals on his own attack, and lost in the semis because he couldn't get out from bottom.

It's been said a million times but damn, PSU has the craziest embarrassment of riches. Have PJ redshirt and then he'll be the next 4xer.
Or you can redshirt Kasak, who was SUPPOSED to redshirt two years ago but was needed because of the injury to Van Ness. Then when Mitchell moves up to 174, Kasak or Duke can step up at 165.

Live look in at Hamiti

Yeah I will give Beau a break in his freshman year, wasting the first month or more trying to win the 141 slot vs Nick, then going up to 149 as a visibly undersized wrestler all year. I think that year hurt his confidence a bit long term.

The most unfortunate part of Beau's career IMO; when he let it fly he was nearly as fast as RBY, he has amazing coordination, a lot of wrestling knowledge & tools, and a high end defense. His biggest obstacle was between the ears, looking for the perfect opening while relying on his defense far too much.

Do you think Messenbrink looks for the perfect setup or angle? For the most part he seems to not give a shit, knowing he is the better wrestler and he will convert at a high percentage regardless of the quality of the attack.

Transplant either Mitch's or Bo Bassett's brain in Beau's body and you have a multi-time champ without a doubt.
Beau was smiling after his 2nd place finish to Mendez last year, but some of us are still griping about it 14 months later.

Am I nuts for thinking Duke has a legit shot at Yianni? You gotta think his lack of competition is going to hurt him.
I think Duke has a great shot at beating Yianni. He seems to match up well style wise. Duke will be bigger and more physical. Yianni is so tricky though. Duke just keeps such incredible position and doesn’t get into the crazy scrambles that Yianni excels at. I might be a bit of a homer but I actually think Duke wins and makes the team
