Senior World Team Trials Challenge - May 16-17

If Carter could have got just a little bit more lift from his feet not only goes he get the two, but he probably gets the four. Dake's chest wrap saved the day there. Veteran move by Dake. I don't think this version of Dake is going to see as much success internationally at 86 kg than he had at 74 and 79. It will be very interesting to see Carter's progression as he now focuses solely on freestyle. I sure hope he sticks with freestyle for a good while rather than quickly transitioning to MMA.
My understanding is that Carter has eyes on the Olympics in LA but things obviously change

You have to sympathize with js1339 here though: First of all you are an Iowa fan. So you are beaten before the event begins. Regardless of the event. 😂 Second, you have to choose between a Penn State NLWC guy, and a Cornell NLWC guy, so you lose anyway, but you have to pick the guy with a few years LESS all things Penn State/Cael/Casey 😂.

Allow me to also add: Yes I am bummed for Carter but you do know Carter, right? I am deadly serious when I say that is going to be the last time he loses, ever again, until he moves on from the sport. Zero doubt. In addition, I am rooting for Kyle to win final x and go get that gold this summer.

We have two undergrads and a guy not even yet enrolled in final x. That’s crazy
Even crazier is that I left out Lilledahl and Mesenbrink. It’s actually three undergrads and two not yet enrolleds.

And craziest is that we have five guys with eligibility in Final X and only one other school has any: OkSt has Jax.

Indeed the talk of our death has been greatly exaggerated.

May God have mercy upon my enemies, because I won’t. General Patton.

I see Carter as our 86 rep in 2028. He will only get stronger and more technically savvy from here.

What a weekend for PSU and the NLWC. Going into Final X we have
57-LL
70-Duke
74-Mesenbrink
79-Levi
86-Dake
92-Barr

With Blaze taking 3rd and Carter second. Would be pretty sweet to put 6 on the senior world team (I’ll take 3 though) especially with 5 of the 6 still having college eligibility and most with 3+ years. I’ve never seen anything like it. Seems like a changing of the guard year. Lots of young guys coming up and a bunch of all time greats hanging up their shoes
Snyder too, potentially, for better or worse.
Yes. It’s crazy to think we have 7 World Team finalists! Hopefully, we’ll have 7 World Team Champions!

4 undergrads

LL, Mitchell, Levi, and Barr.

Count me as someone who thinks Bassett has a career more similar to Marinelli than Hall. Hall was a 3 time finalist, 1x champ in 3 years (and favored to win his senior year after handling Kemerer at Big 10s). He only lost to a single all-timer in Zahid while beating a future multiple world and Olympic medalist multiple times. Hall was WAY more than a solid AA.

Thank you! I almost threw my phone when I saw Bruce's blasphemy about Hall.

See to me the difference here is the head position. Sadulaev more or less has the shoulder beat, but in the Dake/Starocci situation the head is across the body and out the other side
Circling back to say you’re totally right! I had the Dake-Starocci position backwards.

I still think the Sadulaev example shows that it’s the chest lock that matters because Taz put him on both cheeks for multiple seconds.

Someone posted the clip with a clock added in. Dake hits the mat with about .5 seconds left.

79kg Final- Levi Haines vs. Dean Hamiti, Jr (CRTM)

Period 1:
Varner & Casey are in the corner for Levi. Here we go! Tying up & hand fighting. Hamiti with a couple half shots, then he snags an ankle, but Levi fights out of it. Great defense! Back to circling & tying up. Hamiti gets poked in the eye, restart. Back to action. Circling, hand fighting & tying up. Levi gets a passivity warning, restart. Levi shoots & gets deep in on a leg. Hamiti with some heavy hips. Levi keeps working & comes behind for the TD, 2-0, no turns. Back to neutral. Circling & tying up. Hamiti fakes a shot, then hits a low leg shot. Levi is wrapped around the waist. Hamiti keeps driving & gets the TD, 2-2, adv. Hamiti, no turns, restart, 1:02 left. Circling & tying up again, 30-sec left. Levi shoots, nothing. Hamiti re-attack, no dice. Back to circling & tying up. Levi drops in on a single. Hamiti sprawls. Levi drives Hamiti out, but no points, restart. Time quickly expires. 2-2, adv. Hamiti

Period 2:
Back to action. Circling & fakes to start off the second. Hamiti drops in on a single. Levi sprawls back hard & it's a stalemate, restart. Circling & fakes again, then tying up. Levi shoots, Hamiti re-attacks, Levi counters the re-attack & gets another TD, 4-0. Levi has the legs tightly laced, but can't get a turn, restart. Circling, hand fighting & fakes, then tying up. Hamiti reaches for a leg, but no luck, and again. Levi reaches for a leg. Hamiti shoots carelessly. Levi gets a front headlock, then attacks the leg, lifts Hamiti up & finishes the TD, 6-2, no turns, restart. Back to circling & tying up, 1-min left. Hamiti shoots, but Levi sprawls back hard. Levi tries to run behind, but can't get there, restart, 43-sec left. Hamiti shoots, but Levi counters & finishes another TD, 8-2. Levi has a bow & arrow locked up, but the ref blows it dead, restart. Circling & tying up. Hamiti shoots, but nothing. Hamiti tries a drag, but Levi drops to a leg, then finishes another TD, 10-2.

Levi Haines DEC Dean Hamiti, Jr 10-2

Levi takes 1st Place & will face Evan Wick at Final X.
Wanted them all, but this one more than any other. Yes✊. And Levi is winning final X

This may sound non-sensical, but I am seriously asking. When a countdown clock shows only seconds and not tenths or hundredths of a second, does the clock switch, for example, to 6 at 6.0 seconds or 6.99 seconds? I did find this explanation online:

When it says 00:05, what it really means, is that the time is in range of 00:05:99 - 00.05:00
When it says 00:00, what it really means, is that the time is in range of 00:00:99 - 00.00:00

So, if this is correct, in the video above showing the last six seconds of the match, you could have started the countdown to the end of the match anywhere between 6.00 seconds and 6.99 seconds. I am assuming the official clock they use at the mat goes to hundredths of a second, but I don't know that for sure.

Yeah, the slow mo with the clock definitely makes it a little more 50-50 to me.

I’d feel really good about either Carter or Zahid in 2028. Bummer we won’t see it at Final X this year. I definitely have Dake fatigue, though he’s obviously a great competitor.
