SIAP... Jahan's tweet

Why? What's the point? You want my loyalty , show me loyalty . It's business for everyone including me any more.
They don't deserve my loyalty or support .

Something tells me none of the guys opting out give two shits about your loyalty. If it's business for you then you should ask Jahan where you can send the check.

Thanks for giving me another reason to pass on watching this game.

B n B-what’s your stance on the Olympics and the crapfest they have become? Do you root for those “amateurs?” In case you have missed the memos, it is a whole new world in sports. Jahan, Ellis and the others have more than earned the ability to seek their fortunes without the critics in the cheap seats vilifying them. If the NCAA hadn’t been so hypocritical re the amateur status of college football until very recently, many of these college athletes would have been in much better position to have done things differently than having to skulk around in the shadows to be able to live and survive economically.

If you weren't actually part of something, can you quit on it?
When they want your money are you part of it? When you've paid dues for over a generation are you part of it? When you have a degree from the school and one of your children graduated are you part of it? When her mother also attended are you part of it.
Don't try to sell me loyalty when you're not returning it.

Maybe the NCAA should have stopped the BS narrative of it being an amateur sport instead of a big business years ago.
I'd agree with that. Remove the big business sports from college and set up pro leagues. Fund sports that are easier to pay for, more traditional Olympic sports.
I have no issue with collegiate wrestling for example . I have a friend who worked for auburn in their science department . He's both a veterinarian and has a chemistry PhD.
He was on staff and sees the budget shenanigans in regards to football . He's not a fan. He's still paying student loans yet also because well auburn likes football more than chemistry it seems.
These need to be college sports for amateurs or pro leagues run by the pros. I'd be okay with either .

He knew he was going to do this probably in October. A little weird that the announcement comes 4 days prior to the bowl game. His prerogative on the timing and I get he wasn't going to announce in Oct but seems late. I know he doesn't care about what I think or any of us but just wondering.

Please share a screen shot of the letter that PSU sent to you demanding your loyalty! I would love to see it. You have the right to bitch because they aren't going to play in the game, just as they have the right to sit out a meaningless game to avoid injury.

I'm seeing the same arguments on this board as many of the others whose team has multiple opt outs. It's happening all over - especially with the teams with top level NFL talent. just the way it is But a somewhat solution is to expand the Playoffs and make some of these Bowls somewhat important. Right now, outside of the Playoffs, the vast majority aren't.

Sorry, none of that makes you part of the Football team. I actually interned for PSU football for multiple semesters as a student (unpaid, where's my money?!). I actually spent a weekend stuffing Rose Bowl tickets into envelopes in 2008 when the ticket office was short staffed (and then had to answer phone calls from pissed off NLC members who hadn't gotten their tickets as early as they'd hoped). I never considered myself part of the program. Really wanted to meet Joe but no one from the staff or team ever came by. Closest I got was a call from Franco Harris asking if he could get an extra field pass iirc. Dick Vermeil would call a bunch actually.

Look, it sucks and I get the sentiment but it's not Jahan's fault. I'm not happy with where college football is at and I think it's unlikely to get better, although if enough players opting out kills the current bowl system, maybe there is hope...

Years of mismanagement and greed from schools and the NCAA and this is what you get. Instead of recognizing the inevitable and coming up with a reasonable solution that would have been manageable, they went all in with a losing hand, lost the battle and ability to influence what came next. The game's sponsor Outback is owned by Bloomin Brand's. They had revenue over 1 billion last quarter. How much did they offer Jahan? To answer my own question, if you consider the swag bag an offer then he was offered: $150 Amazon gift card, Fossil watch, Jostens ring, $25 Outback Steakhouse gift card, hat.

No reason each bowl and it's title sponsor(s) aren't setting up some sort of NIL fund for players who participate. A bunch of buckeyes opted out of the rose bowl. The title sponsor, Capital One, had a marketing budget of 1.6 Billion in 2020.

NFL Contract's don't cover playoff football. Here was the 2020 post season breakdown for reference (for some reason they aren't being paid in Amazon gift cards):

Wild Card round:

Division Winners playing in Wild Card:
$33,000

Non-Division winning Wild Card teams/Division Winner with 1st round bye: $30,000

Divisional Playoff Game: $33,000

Conference Championship Game: $59,000

Super Bowl

- Winning Team: $150,000

- Losing Team: $75,000

Oh lord , seriously ? I don't like the product anymore . I'm doing what's best for me. Satisfy you . If the games are meaningless, why even play them ?
This and last season were pretty meaningless if you use your metric. What's the point? Pay Franklin 9 million a year? Have the whole team and staff get a few guys to the nfl?

The word gets tossed around a lot but loyalty to major college programs means give us money, don't complain .
The more it's obviously about money , the less some are interested .
But sports fans are a weird breed. They'll accept what they get and beg for more. I like the game better from the 70s-90s. My interest in sports waned since then overall . It's finally reached a tipping point with psu football. I liked it because it was different than the pro game .
I still will watch wrestling that hasn't changed much. Football has.

You consider complaining on here to be what's best for you?

You know, though, I wonder when this idea is going to start infecting the pro game.... If you have a player who is going to become a free agent the next season, perhaps he "opts out" of the regular season for his current team, once they are out of the playoffs.

You occasionally see questions about this in European soccer. There, soon to be free agents can sign a contract for the next season with their new team before the current season ends. That's led to clear conflicts of interest, especially when the old team is playing the new team in a cup competition--there were two cases on my favorite team where transferring players missed the deciding PK's in two diiferent shootouts against their new team. Even if it's totally on the up and up (I saw no reason to believe otherwise), it still has to mess with a player's head.

Contracts are generally written to prevent this. They'd be giving up game checks and potentially missing out on other incentives tied to availability and performance (% of snaps played). Tom Brady has around 2.5 million in incentives built into his contract that he hits for playing 75% of the bucs offensive snaps and leading the league or finishing top 5 in certain categories such as TD passes for example.

Free agents are incentivized to perform well if they want a better future contract. In many (not all) cases, bowl game performance has little impact on future contracts.

Yes, but the last game of a season? Not likely to have a big impact on free agency. Might happen....

NFL can put incentives in the contracts for number of games played.
