SIAP - Trace asked to work out at DB at the combine

I hope Trace is getting the best advice. I know he has his heart set on being a QB, but not sure he is a NFL QB.

Yeah, now all he has to do is find one that agrees.

I agree but there are some bad QB’s that start in the NFL and I could see him finding a job as the number 3 guy at a lot of places. He’d fit the Ravens offense as a backup.

I think at some point he'll have to decide if he wants to be a QB, or does he want to play in the NFL.

Pat Kirwan on the NFL channel thinks if the Ravens want to use that offense, then they have to have 3 QB's ready to play in the same style as LJ. So yes he could fit that bill.

Stupid request. Go out and work out at a position you haven’t played in 4 years. He showed his speed in drills and should pursue his QB dream even if in the new football league.
They asked the big QB from Buffalo to work out at TE. I think he agreed to that, but I am not sure.

Live your dream. Way too early for Trace to give up his dream. No one but James Franklin thought he was a major college QB and yes he was! Ravens should pick him late in the draft

I could easily see that happening, but he can only hang on that way for a limited number of years. I could also see him not making a team. It's not as if there aren't a lot of guys battling for those slots.

I don't disagree with this, and that's why I said 'at some point'. The good news is, unlike say a Hack, TM may have other options and ways to make it in the NFL. We will see, but at this point, I think his best chances, for now, are to stay at QB.

They can't do that to our quarterbacks! Only we can do that to our quarterbacks!

I think Trace will go undrafted. He didn't turn heads with his throws today. However, with teams building around QB's like Mayfield, it makes sense to groom backups with similar skill sets. So if a Mayfield should suffer an injury, you have a backup or practice squad player who can step into the offense designed for that skill set.
I think Trace will be in camp with an NFL franchise this summer. That leaves the door open just a crack. He's generally not going to "wow" scouts in shorts and tee shirt. His intangible qualities show better in live action.

What would be the downside to him working out as a DB?

That teams start thinking about him as a DB. If he doesn't show well, that's even worse.

If he wants to play QB, he should stick to it and not muddy the waters.

If Trace doesn't get a shot at the NFL he has other avenues now.....AAF or Canada. Success there can generate a chance down the road. Doug Flutie, Warren Moon, Joe Theismann, Joe Kapp etc. He's better sticking to QB where his heart is at.

It is odd... when this happened to Eric Crouch everyone on this board called Eric a dbag for insisting on playing QB.

More recently Tebow.

Don't know about anyone else, but I wasn't paying any attention to Crouch's position choice, or Crouch in general for that matter.

As for Tebow, history has proven that he's not an NFL QB, though he did manage to fool a number of GMs for a few years, more power to him.

Dang I thought he beat the Steelers in a playoff game. There are so many bad QB s that started NFL games the past 5 years I find it hard to believe he wasn’t better than a few

Ding Ding Ding. Go Trace. Once again show them they were wrong

If Trace's desperation attempt at staying in the NFL is a move to DB, then try it. For now, stick with QB as he was at worst average, compared to the others, in the passing drills yesterday.

That's actually a pretty good comparison. I think that McSolrey is better than Keenum, too, so maybe.........
The same guy that lit up PSU for like 500 yards in a bowl game and took the Vikings to NFC championship game- that Case Keenum, let Trace get one snap in the pro's at least to say he is better than Keenum.

So PSU is in the NFL and one snap by Trace will prove that he's better? Whatever.

Winning one game against the Steelers wasn't how I defined an "NFL QB." Neither is Tim Tebow's career.

Keenum was a good college quarterback, and did shine for a moment with the Vikings. However, he has otherwise been a disaster in the NFL.

Whatever Trace decides will be a risk. But it's clear that some teams are already thinking of him as a DB. And there is case to be made for either decision. If he signs somewhere as a free agent, you can bet he'll be asked to look at both.

I don't get why its disrespectful to ask. First real job I had out of college the interviewer said I was a terrible fit for a position I was interviewing for but he had another he thought would be great. Ended up working there for 5 years and to date he's the best boss Ive had.

Trace certainly has the right to say no thanks, but it's not disrespectful to ask him if he's open to it.
